Re:I just turned 50. Hell yes.
1970s nerd here. No way for me, too.
The computer tech is quite cool, but I imagined some freaky massive multiprocessor thing built on non-silicon substrates and perhaps using photons to process. CPU speed has pretty much plateaued, mobile will still improve for a few more years then?
Also thought that medical science would improve, but that's really only happened slightly. People nowadays are unhealthy in so many ways it boggles the mind. Meanwhile working medical treatments like antibiotics are starting to fail. No genetically engineered organ replacements, cancer is still a bitch, more people are mentally ill now. Add in obesity etc. Not good.
Space is disappointing. No moon base, no manned Mars missions, no factories in space to cut pollution.
The Internet is a horrid dystopian hellscape with some good bits. Too much spying, too much crap running on pages, too many ads, annoying as shit page changes between mobile ("Open this page in the app!" - no, fuck off) and desktop, massive fraud, social networking contagion effects increasing weird behaviour in society and so on.
Robots? Umm, some progress there but nothing like imagined. Roombas are cool and all but not fundamentally that far removed from this little bloke
Drones? Yeah again, not that far removed from this 1970s device
No cities under the sea.
No fusion.
Still burning shit for 95% of our energy. Solar is cool, but we had solar-powered watches and calculators 30+ years ago.
Now most of us are reliant on operating systems as adware/spyware rather than robust & designed to efficiently run programs.
So the TLDR; glad Moore's Law has kept going, but pretty much everything else is a bit crap.

The Majority of illegals enter legally
and overstay their visit. But even if the goal is no longer to stop the flow of illegals (which is how The Wall was sold to me) but instead of make border patrol's life easier it's no good. For one thing there's ladders. For another it's pretty easy to climb a fence.
As others have pointed out Israel doesn't have a lot of wall or fence. Unless you're gonna station somebody at every inch of fence they're just gonna go over it. Israel's solution is snipers and a willingness to kill. I suppose we could do that. -

Finally! Devel::NYTProf equiv?
Upon entering the job market recently, I discovered that no one wants Perl programmers anymore, it's all Python.
After learning the differences in Python (and learning that I'd need to learn both v2 and v3), I started hunting for some of the tools that I use for Perl, like a profiler.
I couldn't find anything that could touch Devel::NYTProf. (Demo of that here) Hopefully this can?? -

it's not interfering with Latin American countries for the sake of oil profits, cheap labor and our stupid, anti-left wing drug war.

A worse problem is the perma-copyrighted ones
The ones never to be seen again and sometimes potentially lost to time forever are a worse issue.
Any company that puts their things in to open, public domains after a reasonable period is fine with me and whatever others do is up to them.
I have a lot of respect for those that do. I do it myself despite being able to make mad money off some art and programming. Sometimes even anonymously because I would rather they stand on their own two feet than be associated with past work.
Sometimes you just gotta make something for the Greater Good. One thing that is especially sad is seeing some digital works go to waste, being left to rot on a HDD, potentially unused. That saddens me much much more given the potential for re-use.
This is even more hurtful from a film CGI assets perspective. They pretty much never see the light of day outside some companies drives.
Blade Runner 2049 assets in particular
That city scene from 8 minutes on. God DAMN. (I'm also madder most of it got covered by stupid smog for some "vision" of Earth being a helldump)
This likely won't even be used for a third film given the sales, never mind released.
So much work just left to rot. Untouched. Hell, most times you don't even get to see these behind-the-scenes of the rendering process! -

Um.. Gov't jobs are traditionally much more stable
it's only because the GOP has been actively sabotaging the government that this is a problem. This entire shutdown mess is entirely a creation of the GOP.
And I see what you did there with your anecdote where you tell a story with the most obnoxious person anyone can imagine (Big SUV, detailing, of course a Lady because there's a meme for that). Let that rub off on anyone who complains about the shutdown.
I mean, if we're gonna talk about obnoxious folks in the shutdown there's this gem. But there's also a lot of folks trying to figure out how to afford gas. Real Wages are down yet like the article says the GOP base is thrilled. Meanwhile it's not free to go to work. That "hurting the people he's supposed to hurt" lady (meme intended) has a 7 hour commute. Some folks need money for daycare too. Screw this noise. -

Re:'Putting the cart before the horse'
I recommend that you watch the late Hans Rosling explain some statistics about the world in his talks, which are available on Youtube:
How not to be ignorant about the world
New insights on poverty and life around the world
The world is improving much faster than you think, and the problems of the "developing world" are not like the ads of the donation collecting charities want you to believe. The actual problems in most of the world are much less immediate than food and shelter. Information is fundamental and helps people improve their situation beyond the bare necessities. You are right that you don't need the internet if you don't have food and shelter. But your assumption that lack of food and shelter are widespread problems is wrong. -

Re:Age discrimination
You used to see this with black neighborhoods unable to get mortgages because of their zip code. When you put numbers into a database without regard to what comes out you can end up with crap like this.
Actually that's because the law was set up that way - if you were white, congratulations you could get a mortgage, but if you were black, too bad, loan denied.
It was a technique known as "redlining" - be white and live in a nice white suburb, great!
The unfortunate thing is its effects are still felt today.

PS: Wasn't Mexico going to pay for this?
If that was ever funny, it stopped being so long ago.
The only thing that's funny is the revisionist history I've seen people like you engaging in, given that he did say that Mexico would pay for the wall, he did so numerous times, and he even explicitly said that Mexico would pay for it in a "one-time payment". To his credit, he was walking the rhetoric back even before his inauguration, and I think it's a good thing when people (politicians or otherwise) change their minds after realizing that they were wrong, but that doesn't absolve them of responsibility for the things they said. As such, what I'm not okay with is a politician attempting to gaslight an entire nation by lying about what was said when it's inconvenient for him to be held accountable for those words later. There's no denying—at least among honest people—that he made the claim that Mexico would pay for the wall and that they'd do so via a lump payment, rather than the tariffs, taxes, or whatever other reimbursements he's now trying to claim he meant all along.
As an aside, I don't have any "favored politicians". The party I'm registered with stopped representing my interests a long time ago, and none of the others do any better by me.

No, it's not. Thirty years is enough to make significant changes. If one guy can do this all by himself, imagine what could happen if millions of people did the same all over the planet.
If enough people do this, or something similar, it won't even take that long.

Re:Except Mongo already was under AGPLv3
Even the GPL won't "protect" you from what Amazon just did. This makes the GPL the worst choice here:
If Mongo wanted to make money, they should have made it proprietary. If Mongo wanted wider distribution they were better off with a easy BSD-style licence.
On the one side, this is exactly the mistake the Postgresql people made and now we see their popularity being wiped out with the customers that need their solution going to Amazon RDS.
On the other side, there are literally thousands of proprietary databases out there eking their tiny living fighting against eachother and never paying back their development costs. The failed proprietary database count must be tens of thousands. MongoDB would never have brought any money, let alone a multi-million renew if they had tried to go proprietary. For years it was terribly unstable to the point of being almost a joke. Big companies put loads of effort in to fix it.
Compared to postgresql, Mongodb is incredibly lucky in this situation. They have a bunch of features in their API which are not in the new API from Amazon. Compare with RedShift which was almost up to date at the time it forked and then froze a bunch of "postgresql" users on an old API version. The only thing keeping the new code safe from Amazon and giving them some commercial leverage is their license.

Secure the northern border
It's only a matter of time before the nationalists start realizing illegals come in through the northern border, too. Canada would shit a brick if we destroyed the nature's beauty with an ugly wall/fence/whatever the hell this is.
Drones that don't have to land are the absolute holy grail of border security. Sure, it's creepy, but if you've seen the movie Real Genius than you know where this is going - you don't develop this sort of technology without already having an idea how it will be used. Sooner or later, they'll tire of having to send people out to arrest illegals, and the government will just equip the drones with less-than-lethal weapons. Mark my words, it's coming.

Never trust JEWGLE. Here is why
Khazar Talmudic Jews believe this of all they call goyim/gentiles (any non-jew): Jews = biggest racists of all for which they "jew guilt" you for no less! They're hypocrites known as thieves all thru history or were Argentines in the 1940 under Peron, Spanish inquistion, France (1306), Egypt (despoiled/robbed by jews), Arabs (pre & post 1948), England (1330 Edward longshanks), Romans under titus, Russia pogroms and Germany who got rid of them from their nations nazi german's too? No. Driven into DESERTS ages ago! Don't wonder why after all those exilings above.
Should anyone doubt any of this see Jacob Javits' crony Rosenthal spill the beans on it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D4zMVZ8HnFI/ where he called all Christianity fools for helping Israel and the biggest scam of all time per their beliefs below from their Talmud.
This is the province of the synagogue of Satan (Pharisees whom Jesus Christ himself kicked to the curb out of the temple & they killed him for it. Jeremiah did the same to them also + the Essenes could not stand them either breaking away from the pharisee corruption):
Jew Talmud excerpts (the book that calls Christ's mother a whore & a bastard of a roman soldier):
1. Sanhedrin 59a: "Murdering Goyim is like killing a wild animal."
2. Abodah Zara 26b: "Even the best of the Gentiles should be killed."
3. Sanhedrin 59a: "A goy (Gentile) who pries into The Law (Talmud) is guilty of death."
4. Yebhamoth 11b: "Sexual intercourse with a little girl is permitted if she is three years of age."
5. Schabouth Hag. 6d: "Jews may swear falsely by use of subterfuge wording."
6. Hilkkoth Akum X1: "Do not save Goyim in danger of death."
7. Hilkkoth Akum X1: "Show no mercy to the Goyim."
8. Choschen Hamm 388, 15: "If it can be proven that someone has given the money of Israelites to the Goyim, a way must be found after prudent consideration to wipe him off the face of the earth."
9. Choschen Hamm 266,1: "A Jew may keep anything he finds which belongs to the Akum (Gentile). For he who returns lost property (to Gentiles) sins against the Law by increasing the power of the transgressors of the Law. It is praiseworthy, however, to return lost property if it is done to honor the name of God, namely, if by so doing, Christians will praise the Jews and look upon them as honorable people."
10. Szaaloth-Utszabot, The Book of Jore Dia 17: "A Jew should and must make a false oath when the Goyim asks if our books contain anything against them."
11. Baba Necia 114, 6: "The Jews are human beings, but the nations of the world are not human beings but beasts."
12. Simeon Haddarsen, fol. 56-D: "When the Messiah comes every Jew will have 2800 slaves."
13. Nidrasch Talpioth, p. 225-L: "Jehovah created the non-Jew in human form so that the Jew would not have to be served by beasts. The non-Jew is consequently an animal in human form, and condemned to serve the Jew day and night."
14. Aboda Sarah 37a: "A Gentile girl who is three years old can be violated."
15. Gad. Shas. 2:2: "A Jew may violate but not marry a non-Jewish girl."
16. Tosefta. Aboda Zara B, 5: "If a goy kills a goy or a Jew, he is responsible; but if a Jew kills a goy, he is NOT responsible."
17. Schulchan Aruch, Choszen Hamiszpat 388: "It is permitted to kill a Jewish denunciator everywhere. It is permitted to kill him even before he denounces."
18. Schulchan Aruch, Choszen Hamiszpat 348: "All property of other nations belongs to the Jewish nation, which, consequently, is entitled to seize upon it without any scruples."
19. Tosefta, Abda Zara VIII, 5: "How to interpret the word 'robbery.' A goy is forbidden to steal, rob, or take women slaves, etc., from a goy or from a Jew. But a Jew is NOT forbidden to do all this to a goy."
20. Seph. Jp., 92, 1: "God has given the Jews power over the possessions and blood of all nations."
