Re:Why do we always get this from the UK?
In the UK we used to have a chap called Jeremy Beadle on TV playing pranks on people. At the end he'd turn up as a traffic warden, policeman, or whatever and take off his fake beard and the mark would find it hilarious.
You've reminded me of Not The Nine O'Clock News' wonderful spoof of it, here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?...

Re:She should ask Google to forget her
You've mis-understood her complaint. She has a legitimate gripe here: either the DMCA is irredeemably broken, or YouTube's implementation of it is. Their system is:
1. Make baseless DMCA complaint about someone
2. Get all their ad revenue until they successfully fight the complaint - several days at least for high-profile YouTubers, perhaps forever for normal people
3. Keep all that revenue after the complaint is found to be baseless
4. Profit! There are dozens of videos from movie and game reviewers about this, who are constantly barraged by baseless takedown notices.
Here's a good start to learn more: https://www.youtube.com/watch?...

Flawed iPhones versus Bad iPhones
don't agree. They've had bad iPhones. They've bent over users with updates. It will take a lot more than that to get the iFanboys to switch.
They've had flawed iPhones but not a truly bad one. I'm talking one with flaws so bad it actually affects sales. I'm talking a seriously screwed up device. Something much worse than any problem we've seen so far. Geeks here on slashdot tend to overreact to what in reality are relatively minor missteps by Apple. Antenna-gate for example was a problem but since almost everyone puts their phones in cases anyway it didn't really matter much from a business perspective.
Alternatively the other way Apple could run into trouble would be through margin pressure on the iPhone. It's not hard to envision the smartphone market getting mature like PCs and prices experiencing downward pressure. If Apple can't continue to come up with new features (or can't do it fast enough) people are willing to pay a premium for this will eventually happen. If phones become more commoditized Apple isn't really built to compete on price. I think the margin pressure scenario is actually somewhat more likely than the Bad iPhone scenario but either is a real possibility.
Apple is running into the law of big numbers. There simply aren't a lot of products they can make that can generate enough revenue to grow the company meaningfully. I think Apple hasn't paid enough attention to web services. There's some potential there. I could maybe see them getting into home automation or appliances. We've heard rumors about a car but the auto business is WAY different than consumer electronics (I'm in the auto industry myself) and it's unclear if Apple can develop real competency there. Apple is really a software business with a bit of design competency thrown in. Hard to see that translating gracefully to cars though I suppose anything is possible. I suppose if Elon Musk can figure it out I don't see why Apple couldn't. I think more likely they will end up buying one or more large companies and diversifying their revenue streams to some degree. Right now all their eggs are in consumer electronics but they have the cash to buy their way into other industries for the right price. A telecom (think something like buying AT&T) would be an intriguing purchase and Apple has enough cash to make it happen.
You think they'll finally be profitable in only a few years?
Yes I expect Amazon will eventually show profits. When? I don't pretend to know. They could be profitable tomorrow if they wanted to be though I think that would be a mistake. I think the real profit engine from Amazon will probably be their web services and maybe their media business. Their retail business (the stuff the ship in boxes) is really more of a cash generating engine than anything else. It provides the cash flow to fund these other business lines. But it's a low margin high volume business and it's not inconceivable that competitors like Walmart could catch up to them. So far though Amazon has made it really easy to do business with them and nobody else has managed to match them in online retail.
That said, your concern about profits does have considerable merit. Ideally as an investor you'd like to see them growing AND making profits along the way like Apple has done. But I think in the long run if Amazon doesn't do anything stupid it is a better investment today than Apple.

Re:Sure, but what about Israel?
For those on the other side of the pond who've never heard of it, the world's largest annual music competition - Eurovision - just voted a muslim woman as the winner. Of course, that was more a slam at Russia than anything else, since she's a Tatar and was singing about how the Russians ethnically cleansed her great grandmother.

Re:the real question
A short list of things the ISS is doing for humanity in general:
1. The practicalities of human habitation in space, something that cannot be reproduced on earth.
2. Construction techniques on earth and in space
3. All that tech developed that NASA licenses to anyone who asks
4. A detailed look at how gravity influences any number of physical processes both in and out of vacuum
5. Probably the best cover of Space Oddity ever made
6. Showing the world concrete proof that they can accomplish great things if they work together (oh, except for China, but they take it as a challenge of equals instead of a condescending geopolitical stance which is nice at least)
7. An orbital launch platform for commercial microsats
8. A rationale for the commercial space industry to exist in any capacity beyond satellite launches
9. The secure knowledge that someone will be around to witness the end of the world and appreciate it -
Re:Because they do it at all
That has an element of untruthiness to it, because it's noticed as a paradox that, as societies get more progressive and there's less gender 'inequality' in broader terms, women tend towards traditionally female occupations. Whereas, in countries that are deemed gender unequal, those places tend towards a lot more of a gender balance in traditionally male dominated fields, such as engineering.
The explanation is, that in societies where women can do what they want to do, well, they do, they're uninhibited to select occupations which they want, and do. In those countries which are deemed unequal, they tend to be poorer, and women tend to go towards careers that pay better.
There's a good documentary from Norway on this paradox; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cVaTc15plVs, and I think it goes a long way to explain this whole 'women in tech' issue and why it's such a beat up!
My suspicion is that what really is at play with a lot of these studies in gender equality is really socioeconomic differences. Poorer countries are generally deemed as having less gender equality, and part of the outcomes of poorer countries is that their education systems aren't going to be the best. Similarly, the countries which are deemed most equal also tend to be towards the top end of GDP per capita, so there's going to be a lot more funding for things like education.

When I watch "pranks" like this one, inevitably those videos are filmed in a place like Australia or the UK. If someone tried that in the US they would get shot within the first few takes, and the person with the gun would probably not get charged.
And as a bleeding-heart gun-grabbing liberal, I would sigh and weep... for all the innocents who suffered before the prankhole got what was coming to him.

Re:I weep for the airline industry.
This is a video that breaks down the cost of an $80 airline ticket, but I summarize the video below:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?...
It's 10 minutes long, but it breaks down the cost of an $80 airplane ticket as:
$2.50 - fuel (airplanes get a per person fuel efficiency of 104.7 miles per gallon)
$1.50 - crew costs (2 pilots, 4 flight attendants)
$13.50 - airport fee (takeoff fee, landing fee - include using gates, luggage, etc)
$15.60 - taxes (domestic passenger ticket, FAA $4 fee, TSA has $5.60 9/11 tax)
$11.50 - pay for the cost of the airplane amoratized across the flights it will take
$14.00 - airplane maintenance
$10.00 - employees at airline (janitor, benefits, salaries for United employees, etc)
$0.25 - insurance for the airplane
$1.25 - misc (hotel costs for crew, liability insurance, etc)
$10.00 - profit
------------------
Total: $80 for one way airplane ticket
The two things that struck me about that is: 1) fuel was a really REALLY small component, and 2) taxes are the largest single part of the ticket. -

Re:"rigorously reviewed" ?!
Well said ! That is precisely why Wikipedia is shit. Ignoring the problem doesn't make it go away. This delusion of censorship just makes them look like a tool. The only sensible approach is to boycott Wikipedia over its retarded policies(*).
A fantastic movie is the 1970 iconic Soldier Blue (starring a young Candice Bergen before she was the famous Murphy Brown). It is available on Amazon Prime (but not Netflix.) The trailer does a great job of showing the brutality that both sides engaged in.
It definitely raises some interesting question: Your land is being threatened by (British and American) foreigners who believed in the delusions of "Might makes Right" and won't stop at anything; they make treaties and go back on their word; they brutally kill and genocide anyone who disagrees with their politics. Seriously, WTF were the Indians supposed to do? Sadly, nothing has changed for the USA.
:-(I guess they say History is written by the Winner(s). It is sad that people have no respect that they feel they must censor the truth of mass genocide the British Empire engaged in.
(*) Note: Another example of Wikipedia's dumb policies is "No Trivia". Hey dumb-fuck-wikipedia-administrators: Just because the information has no value to you, doesn't imply it has no values to others. Oblg.
/sarcasm Oh noes! We might have useful information for (some) people! The Horror!--

I think it's got something to do with codecs and stuff. My Windows is old enough to not come with the newfangled codecs. The YouTube codec test page only gets two check marks (out of six) for me. If I had Vista or 7 it might work?
Is there a switch on YT that lets video authors switch off 'low quality' versions of their videos?

Mein Fuhrer, is that YOU?
Not everyone wants to be treated like cattle who are owned by the state and can be forcibly injected with whatever the state demands, on whatever schedule the state chooses, and for whatever reason the state chooses. Such a gross surrender of individual rights to top-down almighty government by eleites can naturally only lead to one place: a government that decides when its people are no longer valuable and should be humanely eliminated. Hitler did not start that vile chain of thinking; it originated with early twentieth century American progressives and their British friends, the Fabians. Here is famous Nobel Prize winning left-wing hero George Bernard Shaw explaining the need for people to justify their existence to the state and advocating for that whole gas chamber idea (using a "humane" lethal gas, of course).
I am personally not an anti-vaxer, and I think such people are frequently idiotic luddites.... but freedom and liberty say that as individuals, they have the right to not be injected. The rest of us have the right to stay away from them where possible, and a responsibility to act responsibly ourselves to avoid contaminating ourselves and our families after we've been exposed to them. As for your assertion that parents have no rights, please to tell why the government has more rights to children than the parents who made them have. You assert that the parents are only custodians....but by what rule is the government made the more-superior and responsible custodian of individual children??? (The Supreme Court has ruled many times that government has NO responsibility to the individual - police are to protect the community but cannot be held to account for protection of any individual. The military has the responsibility to protect the nation, but not individual Americans. Even Social Security is not an obligation to pay money to any particular individual according to the justices.)
The degree to which people like you want everybody to subject themselves to government that, as a baseline assumes totalitarianism as a given, is just amazing. Even the very conversation often includes terms like "herd immunity", which is understandable in a technical sense, but is nevertheless an eye-opener when wielded by people advocating for a powerful government that demands the right to treat its people almost exactly like owned cattle.
Oh, and people on the left love to paint issues like this as "right wing", and "anti-science" but that's the purest form of bull excrement; the anti-vaccine stuff was initially started and is still being fueled by Bobby Kennedy Jr and then made popular by Jim Carrey who was fixated on his porn babe Jenny McCarthy who was ranting because her son had autism (these are left-wingers and their opposition is anti-science). The limited number of right wingers opposed are NOT opposed because of science but rather because they are opposed to the political assertion that government has the right to order people to be injected with stuff (something FAR more invasive than spying on e-mails or cell phones).
"Progressive" educators and politicians are doing a brilliant job of propagandizing an entire generation of younger Americans into believing in the vile "Progressive" political movement that, the last time it arose became so hated it had to go into hiding for decades. These educators and politicians are being very careful to not let the young see just how evil this ideology is and where it leads, which partly explains why the quality of history teaching is plummeting in the schools. Hint for the young: History proves that "progressivism" always inevitably leads to death camps if not abandoned in time. Those who forget the past are doomed to repeat it.
