https://archives.gentoo.org/ge...Thank you for the response, though I feel you don't address my
question. Happily though, I spoke with an acquaintance and it was
determined that the subservience to the license (i.e. agreeing to be
bound by the GPL2) could not be offered as consideration as its
restrictions were not the licensee's to offer at the time of
acceptance of the license. The licensee had no rights to offer as part
of the contract, as the contract had not yet given them any rights to
give up. The terms put forth by the GPL2 are only restrictions that
are part of the license.Furthermore, as stated above, it should seem quite self referential -
I can't offer my acceptance of a license as consideration, because it
is what I am trying to accept. As I am sure you are aware, under US law there is no contract if both
sides have not provided consideration. This leaves us in the strange
place of gratis licenses being suggestions.Cheers,

Re:What a shame (not)
The relationship is much more symbiotic than parasitical; Google News pulled out of Spain at the end of 2014 for a similar link tax, and the publishers floundered:
https://www.zdnet.com/article/...[the] 'substitution effect' is very small in comparison to the 'market expansion effect' that aggregators cause.

Re:The garden wall provides no safety.
Well yes if you want to nitpick, I wasn't literally correct to say "no safety" if you compare the safety of a person installing any random app from inside vs. outside the app store, although that's not something a person will normally do. Similarly in my analogies, of course you'd be in more danger inside the lion cage or strapped to the outside of the submarine. If you assume a person would be stupid enough to go there, which they generally aren't.
Title nitpicking aside, you'd have a good argument if you had the scale of the malware problem in app stores correct. Which you didn't...you were at least a couple of orders of magnitude low:
https://www.zdnet.com/article/...
https://www.express.co.uk/life...
https://bgr.com/2015/09/21/ios... (In which a piece of software used by over half a billion people was infected, among many others).
So yes, there is a helluva lot of water getting through that submarine hull.

Links please?
I'm not saying it's not impossible, but for that kind of accusation you need to provide some proof - I have not read of anything like that happening.
The location data is not as easy to got, nor as accurate as you and many other seem to think - and here they are saying most people would be asked via text if it was OK to hand out location data.
Again, I still don't think carriers should even be allowed to sell this data. Wouldn't that then make the perfect case to pass an actual LAW banning it - you know, the thing Congress DOES? Why should the FCC even be involved if the problem is truly serious?

Re: Getting tired of this
OLEDs have low power consumption, size limited only by how many LEDs you want to string in/pay for
OLED displays have HIGHER power consumption than LED backlit IPS under normal conditions.
fair resilience
Millions of tiny little light bulbs is not fair resilience it's madness with predictable results. The only OLED display I own is a VR HMD. I can clearly see results of uneven wear of lighting elements and it has less than 200 hrs use.
As a counter, LCDs have higher power consumption
Absolutely not. LCDs consume LESS power than OLED. Sure you can put a starfield up on the screen and assert otherwise but realistic real world testing has shown LCDs under the same conditions consume less energy. Reducing brightness of OLED displays cause a corresponding substantial reduction of contrast.
poor resilience (even minor bending of the crystal matrix can cause a fairly large amount of damage),
LCDs are much more reliable than OLED displays in every way that matters. Resilience to bending is not a real thing it's an act of desperation to show OLED is worthwhile typically by people with more money than sense trying to justify a decision they would regret had they been thinking clearly.

Re: Macs had this for years
Or, you know, look up about Google's own USB Fuzzer efforts to realize that the Linux handling of URBs is questionable. Their move to UAS is actually broken on at least some devices (Seagate Enclosures come to mind) requiring quirks to revert usage, and while I can't verify it as true I have suspicions that issues I've personally experienced with the OOM killer on backing up to such a device when over half of memory is free may come down to either memory fragmentation or just heavy memory leaks.
Basically, USB has been for me on Linux one of the largest minefields of stability in the last 5-10 years. That's both good (in that it's isolated) and bad (in that it seems to have gotten a lot worse as greater feature support has been added). I do not have particular belief that Apple or Windows are fundamentally any better in their own development process to avoid issues, and I presume that being a physical attack vector it has been very much a low priority for most developers/users. Smartphones with encryption are somewhat changing this. I don't know if that will substantially mean something in the desktop/laptop space, though.

Re:we believe
The problem with the theory is that to accept this, you have to pretty much accept that Microsoft optimized Edge to render YouTube really well, which means almost any changes would have broken the optimization
Render video websites using the GPU accelerated 'fast path' rather than the in CPU version - totally accept that MS would have optimised Edge's video playback for arguably one of the larger video playback websites out there...
and moreover the intent of those optimizations was probably to cheat on benchmark
Occam's Razor: At the time, Microsoft were demonstrating dramatically better battery life with Edge over Chrome. It's very very likely to me that the fast-path optimisation results in singificantly less power consumption as it can exile that out to the GPU instead of the CPU doing it. So, no, cheating on benchmark? No. They highlighed the battery life benchmark which everyone else was ignoring. Look at the references in this article.I suspect someone at Google accidentally discovered this. But I don't know if it was delibrate by Google (taht's the million dollar quesiton). Yes, MS would eventually patch around it, but unfortunately MS are caught between those that say "stablity at all costs" and complain when Microsoft updates things -- and those that wish MS updated things more often. And, of course, MS isn't a monolithic organisation!

We should have seen this coming, and did
Google famously said it wanted to index "all the world's information", but we all know that information is power... That's all the world's power, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.
This wasn't new, but the warnings about it in the mid-2000's were out-shined by the distractions of the new technical advances Google was bringing (AJAX, Web 2.0, etc...), followed by the "data fetishists" that came into cultural and philosophical power around the time of the Obama Administration.
Perhaps if we'd taken better heed of the warnings signs, we'd be in a different place now. Here's ZDnet back in the day: https://www.zdnet.com/article/google-targeting-all-the-worlds-content-and-all-your-information/
Google has been rightly called to task for its disingenuous “do no evil” formula. As we embark on this changing of the seasons perhaps it is also time to change our tune on Google’s celebrated mission to make “universally accessible and useful" the world’s information they have “organized.”
As I put forth in “Google to Microsoft: Wolf in sheep’s clothing,” Google has an uncanny ability to make even its most calculated of competitive moves appear to be generous, friendly endeavors:
Google has a knack for launching (hoped for) category killer applications directly aimed at usurping existing market leaders’ positions with its reassuring “we’re not a competitive threat, we complement each other” mantra.
Google downplays its blatant incursions into competitors’ territories, while promoting its encroachment on the information and content of others.
Google CEO Eric Schmidt was beaming at the company’s Q2 2006 earnings conference call in July; his unbridled confidence in the power of Google to virtually master the world was palpable over the Internet. Schmidt started the conference call by extolling:
not just from an information perspective, but also from a monetization perspective We don't see any signs of approaching any limits to this vision. The opportunities before us really are unlimited at this point.
What is the unlimited opportunity Schmidt is targeting? Google believes it is in its power and in its right to be master of the world’s content and ruler of the world’s advertising. According to Schmidt:
we said we are in the search business, so we need all of the information. We want to partner with people to get information so our search end users can see it. We're also in the advertising business, and we'd like to provide advertising services to people who have their own proprietary content. So depending on where we are in that spectrum, we either do an advertising deal or a content deal or a hybrid deal. But ultimately our goal at Google is to have the strongest advertising network and all the world's information, that's part of our mission.
Google is not simply posturing, it is all too serious.

Apple... "The iPhone XS Max with 256GB could be yours for $1,249, but if you were to buy all its components it would cost about $443, compared with $395.44 for the 64GB iPhone X." https://www.zdnet.com/article/...

Research paper suggests this was deliberate
This article discusses the following research paper which analyses China's efforts to gain the capabilities that brought google down...
https://scholarcommons.usf.edu...
....whilst minimising the opportunity of the US and the west to create a similar attack against China. -
Re:So they remove features people use...
Mozilla is working on potentially useful stuff, not world domination.
Nobody suggested "world domination". Why the need for a straw man?
What we *are* concerned about is yet another attempt to monetize Firefox by trading user privacy for dollars. You know, like the sponsored tiles which people hated and were removed, but have just recently been replaced with the totally-not-the-same-thing-trust-us sponsored content.
That, and Mozilla has a bad habit of turning extensions into forced bundled features, like they did with Pocket.

Re:So iPhone lets you "listen in" on the conversatThe point is, the device is only secure as the communication line is. We've all seen the evidence that 2G and 3G networks are basically wide open to MITM intercept attacks by just turning on a cell simulator (Stingray) device close to the phone, especially with encryption downgrade attacks. 4g and LTE systems may be more secure, but even those are susceptible some attacks. The president is certainly worth the effort if anyone is.
Some example attacks: https://www.zdnet.com/article/...

DEFINITELY Not long enough
Mod parent comment up!
The "2 years" Google is now giving is what has been already established. Everyone is expected to spend $700 to $1100 every 2 years on a new cell phone.
There is NO REASON for Google to be abusive. A mid-level Google manager told me years ago that Google is making more money than it knows how to spend.
Google has moved from "Do no evil" to "Let's be destructive to others if that will make money". One article: Google Removes 'Don't Be Evil' Clause From Its Code of Conduct (May 18, 2018)
Another article: Google erases 'Don't be evil' from code of conduct after 18 years (May 21, 2018) -

The scary part is this wasn't some random web designer. This was a "prodigious German developer Sebastian Tschan".
Just imagine what those webdesigners are building ... shudders.
