The game in question supports In-App-Purchases, and in fact, to play the game to conclusion, most users will spend more money
for in-app-purchase of weapons etc than the game's initial purchase price. The game calls home.

These purchases can't (yet) be hacked like the reported hacking of IOS in-app purchases.

Its widely suspected that this was Madfinger Games monetization plan all along.

They planned to release at 99 cents, gain a quick couple hundred thousand downloads, recovering all of their development costs. (This isn't their first game, and they already had their game engine in the can from earlier games).

Then, magnanimously, when it became clear that you needed to make in-app-purchases, they planned to make it free.

They go so much flack for making it free after charging about a quarter of a million people 99 cents, that they decided to play the victim card.

But ALL THE TIME their game had been calling home for authorization at install, and ALL THE TIME they had allowed these pirated installs because they were intending to make their money on In-App-Purchases, and really didn't give a rip about piracy.

Its a suckers play, and most of the mainstream press as well as bloggers who should know better are falling for it.

May I make a suggestion? Look at Pale Moon for your brother as the LTS won't give you as long as you think, not with the way they've been spinning version numbers like a top, whereas Pale Moon has stopped any UI "enhancements" and version 12 because they too don't care for the direction Mozilla is taking. as a bonus its compiled for newer CPUs with the SSE flags so it actually gives it a nice kick in the pants.

As for what has been going on with OSes lately...sigh. if I wanted a God damned cell phone for a desktop i would have a damned desktop, just a cell phone! Why the fuck do they think everyone wants to have a cell phone UI everywhere? The only thing I have EVER agreed with SJVN on is that the new UIs all suck and nooo, not because we are 'scared of change" or any other bullshit, I've been through plenty of desktop UIs, from Win 3.x and 9x through BBox through KDE and Flux, no its because its all about the bling and aping fricking smartphones instead of actually designing for the fricking form factor. Its just the opposite of the retarded 'Hey lets make phones into teeny tiny desktops!" that MSFT did with WinCE for a damned decade, only now its "Hey lets make desktops into supergigantic smartphones".

Its all just a big giant clusterfuck and I'll be glad when these things bomb big time so they can actually focus on making desktops that work again, instead of feeling like my monitor should be touch and have a slide out keyboard just to deal with the mess.

Stupid ms plugin that automatically added itself to Firefox and wouldn't install. oops said ms. Mozilla had to release a hotfix to disable the plugin for all users.

hotmail not working properly for Opera users. A bug made hotmail keep sending an incomplete file to Opera browsers. the developers of operas first alerted ms and then sent them a physical letter. Both were ignored.

ms crying for interoperability in the early msn days and then when msn got king marketshare, third party chat programs would be mysteriously locked out when they tried to access msn chat servers.

You have the US gov telling you it wants in on your data, a US .com telling you about chat data been watched and a great friend of the US gov suggesting keeping your data safe.
The cloud is not looking great from any perspective, as FOSS data storage or a web 2.0 chat experience with 'free' storage options.
As people have hinted, get a few low cost 'unlimited' US servers, spread your daily encrypted data into the back end of your new 'blog'/'homepage' .
Any of this 'cloud' stuff can be lost in bulk at any time just to find one ip posting to a forum/blog as the US gov lifts out hardware for a few months/years.

If they can do this with APPLE In-App payment system overridden I wonder if they can do this with virtual wallets.

Samsung is paying MS for the patents - because the cost really is trifling enough to not worth fighting it in court, and business is business ("shame"? what's that?). It's not paying Apple because Apple is not asking for money, it's just demanding that Samsung stops using the features.

In general, you can do work or you can answer questions from management, but you can't do both.

Not buying it; we're not talking about some open-source, crowd-funded underdog, here - If you're really trying to convince me that communicating with customers when things go wrong is too much work for a company that has more money than the government, you've got a tough road ahead. Meanwhile: Google denies Android botnet claim, Google denies preventing anti-competition probe, Google denies 'cooking' search results,Samsung denies, and Samsung remains adamant in denying its full responsibility and unwilling to pay due compensation to all the deceased workers..

I support Mozilla because I do not want tablet makers deciding what browser I run and having webkit take over the market. The only reason IE 9/10 are somewhat decent browsers is because MS got its ass whopped on a silver platter by both Mozilla and Google.

Windows RT will be IE trident only with FF and Chrome negligated to the desktop mode only on x86. If MS gets rid of the desktop in Windows 9 you are screwed and it is no more Comodo Dragon for you!

Apple is evil too and is doing the same with Safari as Chrome for IOS is just a Safari skin with a limited no JIT version of javascript provided by Apple. Firefox shouldn't have to make its own OS to keep its browser relevant but no one will write laws or their representatives about this issue to change this. Even if I do not run Firefox anymore I sitll want them to be relevant as to enforce all the other browser makers to play nice. Still I can see Apple CSS with iStore integration, and Chrome's newest ajax requires Dart on Android, and all sorts of other horrors, but I hope I am wrong.

The problem it solves are OS maker lockins.

Got that nice Windows RT device from work? oops you have to use IE no other browser is supported. How about the shiny IPAD? Oops Safari only as Chrome is just a skin of Safari with a very crippled javascript engine, no dart support, other Apple lockins etc.

Firefox will be dead by the time WIndows 9 is out if MS kills the desktop as FF has to use the trident IE rendering engine in METRO mode.

iOS locks out javascript and competing browsers are just webkit Safari based with different UI skins. Andriod is it the same with webkit and only Chrome gets V8. Where does that leave Gecko or anyone else in the new browser wars?

What if IE takes 80% of the market again in 10 years? What is there to stop them from making IE 6 2.0? What is to stop Apple from making their own extensions to CSS and HTML that integrate with its iStore?

What's particularly innovative about the ipad design? Like what's so innovative that it deserves a patent? (i personally believe the ipad to be an innovative device, i just don't see what's so special about its design)

Samsung's innovation is substantial... they used to actually have innovation. But looking at their history its obvious that if it wasn't for Apple, they likely wouldn't have changed the designs of their tablets which, prior to the iPad 2010 release, were completely different:

Also, not a bad offering at the time... but, again, completely different than iPad, in 14 years Samsung's basic tablet design has not really evolved much, besides the advancement in the underlying technology, they added some buttons to the bezel... a new innovation.

Moving forward to 2011, we have the Samsung Series 7 Convertable.
Just a glance reveals the impact iPad's 2010 release had on Samsung design... even with a keyboard, the new tablet is far more similar to iPad's design than previous Samsung tablet designs, though it still runs a newer version of Windows, the bezel width has decreased and the buttons have disappeared.

As for Samsung's current offering, we have the Samsung Galaxy! The bezel width has expanded from the design of the Series 7, and Windows is replaced with a version of Android that is not all that different from iOS. Here it is with Apple's iPad:

I'll leave it up to the discriminating slashdotter to decide if Samsung has possibly encroached on any of Apple's design patents, even if a legal expert and the only authority that matters has already conveniently done this for us (but what could they possibly know that slashdotters don't!).

If you're looking for good examples of how one can avoid encroaching on Apple's designs, look at Apple's Mac Mini and its competition. PC manufacturers have offered a multitude of small PCs that perform similarly to the Mac Mini without having to resort to copying it outright. They have innovated a plethera of attractive designs that don't even come close to looking like the Mini while still retaining a small desktop footprint. The point here is that it can be done... the design of the iPad is not the only possible design for a tablet... Samsung themselves have proved that, yet they have aparently abandoned the idea of innovating their tablet design any further.

Customization and the ability to use any certified fabricator is a huge deal with embedded devices designers that use the ARM chip. The reality is that Intel does not want to go down the road of customization and only will if they absolutely have to. ARM is a very different business model and allows the device manufacturers to actually make products that offer different features. Apply has even pulled ARM development into their core functional design teams. They may even roll out the ARM in laptops which makes sense if they can do it. Finally, for those making the CISC vs RISC argument you need to realize that the modern Intel processors run on a RISC core with a CISC microcode layer and an fairly large pipeline.

Android is simply too lasses faire and requires too much learning for your non-geek and simply doesn't "work" yet.

Citation needed. My wife seems to be able to operate her Android without any trouble. Why is being laissez-faire a problem? And what particulary "doesn't work"? Market share is a hard thing to measure, but by at least some metrics, Android is outcompeting iOS fairly substatially.

I LOLed at this article[1] on ZDNet this morning for its sensationalist, lowest-common-denominator "OMG computer hackery stuff" reporting, with its implied link between MD5's weakness (which has been known for years) and the LinkedIn breach (even though they use SHA1), and its ridiculous accompanying screen cap (running user-space tools while logged in as root, which no security-minded user would ever do, but hey "root@" at a shell prompt with lots of hackery output looks l33t).

And now here's basically the same thing on Slashdot. Yawn...

Microsoft almost always supports other platforms if it has enough marketshare and if they think they can make money off it. They even seem to be making Office for the iPad. The summary is trying to be a troll as usual. This is like WINE, more support is always good if you trying to get as many customers as possible.

Thanks but frankly Metro just pisses me off. hell it doesn't even follow cell phone UI conventions as you point out with iPad and Safari, and I watched time and time again as normal users, smart people that do complex tasks on and off a PC daily, ALL ended up just frustrated and upset. Upset with themselves that they couldn't just "pick it up" which i told them the thing is so screwy and unintuitive NOBODY is just gonna "pick it up" without a HELL of a lot of trial and error, and frustrated with the OS that tasks that they have found trivial to do for years and years were suddenly as alien to them as if I dropped them in front of a CP/M machine's blinking cursor.

For another good take on metro just read this article where he goes step by step through what is wrong with the UI, but his number one reason i agree with completely, the entire OS is made for touch and touch above all...when was the last time you saw a touch screen desktop in the average home? How many touch screen laptops have you seen lately? Is YOUR desktop or laptop a touch screen? Mine isn't yet without a touch screen it feels like you are fighting it every damned step of the way. Hell I wish I had the link because one of the articles praising Metro started with "And here I'll show that you can even use it on old hardware! Right now i have loaded it onto this touch screen AMD Athlon laptop and I had to LMAO because even when he was plugging metro he had to dig up a laptop with a fricking touch screen!

In the end if you aren't one of the 3-4% that have a touch screen desktop or laptop Win 8 is pointless and will just irritate the living hell out of you. I honestly tried to like it, I really did, in fact i used it as my main OS for nearly a month. But the constant switching between metro and desktop, the constant feeling of fighting the OS, the major step backwards in multitasking...it was just too much. I've run the beta of every MSFT OS since Win2K and I even fought Vista for nearly a year before giving up (I was one of those bit by the file transfer and the lost network shares bugs) but Metro is just too much of an unintuitive PITA for me to deal with anymore, I'll pass MSFT and so will my customers.

I'm surprised that *no-one* has mentioned ExpressLogic vs Green Hills (see http://www.eetimes.com/electronics-news/4061092/Express-Logic-seeks-injunction-against-Green-Hills) at all, during this sordid saga.

It seems that was probably one of the earliest cases regarding the legitimacy of API cloning (GH tried to implement a "ThreadX"-compatible API on top of one of their proprietary RTOSes), and eventually lead to Green Hills winning against ExpressLogic (see http://www.zdnet.com/blog/gardner/ruling-expressly-denies-express-logic-its-copyrighted-api-logic/2530).

That said, I also thought of the Sony vs Connectix case - but there, Connectix used reverse-engineered PlayStation BIOS code heavily in their own product, if I remember correctly.

Motorola (first mobile call 1973) are being sued by Microsoft (formed 1976) because, whilst clearly they are the newbies in this area, each and every time the obvious sequence of events is brought up out come the naysaysers whining about all Motorolas relevant patents having expired. So, these jerks with their '50s technology is somehow relevant, how?

Ummm. Asking a question here. What does the Patriot Act have to do with anything?

The difference being you'd need to go to court to get a warrant, and I believe there would be a legal opportunity to be notified of this. If Canadian law enforcement accessed your data, you could legally know about it.

The Patriot Act basically says they can demand it, with very little legal support, and it is against the law to tell someone that their data has been accessed from your servers under this request.

So, it comes down to the US having granted themselves access to any and all data from a US owned company or US hosted server ... and made it illegal to disclose that access has happened.

If that data access comes under the guise of secrecy and not going through the normal courts, you'll never know it happened.

As I said, those provisions of the Patriot Act give access that concerns a lot of people ... see here.

So, based on what I've read, and what I've been told by corporate policies ... for anybody who isn't in the US, America and American owned companies are completely untrustworthy since the law reads like it bypasses local laws when it comes to data security and privacy.

Now, for a bit of balance the other way, I see that people are starting to say the Patriot Act isn't so intrusive and this is all blown out of proportion.

But, until I see company and legal policies changing here in Canada, I will continue to treat data being put into a US server as a stupid idea, and I will continue to treat those entities as hostile and not trustworthy.

Since I'm not a lawyer, and I don't have anything to gain by suddenly trusting these entities, if I stick with this, I'm in compliance with company policy. I'll just err on the side of caution -- not trusting the US government is just a bonus at this point.

Something I'm going to point out below about Windows 8 dispels that though man, as well as your point on "aging systems" (which I wager strongly due to disk geometries & larger files taking longer to do I/O too as well will be dispelled too, with mere facts + physics)... keep reading!

Come on man... that's silly! Have you read on Windows 8 then on that account? They're doing what "tweakers" like myself have been doing for decades (earlier than windows too, like in DOS or *NIX variants in cutting off TSR's &/or daemons that are unneeded etc.)...

I.E.-> They're FINALLY putting in "auto-cutoff" services, so if you are NOT actively using their services? They "auto-shutdown" & can MANUALLY restart, IF & WHEN necessary, to save CPU cycles, RAM, & other forms of I/O associated with them... this makes for a FASTER system!

In fact, I proved that very thing back circa 2005-2006 @ TechPowerUp.com during their "ScienceMark" benchmark which I helped start a HUGE "competition" for there that's still going 1/2 a decade++ now in fact... what did I show them?

How to get another 10-20% out of that & other benchmark scores, & doing JUST what MS is now FINALLY DOING, per the above... because it works.

(Feel free to inquire there on that note, because yes, it really works, and yes, MS is FINALLY implementing it as a "std. feature" in Windows 8 (could be the BEST WINDOWS EVER, except for that stupid metro interface (sorry, as much as I like MS? It's good for phones, but, I think it's going to be a "FLOP" on PC desktops because of that dumb interface... they're making DECADES LONG USERS change to something they're NOT used to, breaking a cardinal core sales rule of "JUST GIVE CUSTOMERS WHAT THEY WANT & THEY WILL BUY")).

That could also be "disk bulk" from files, &/or registry bulk on reads/writes too, because it's just a FACT that more populated HDD's especially have to perform larger 'swings' to get to data, and with rotational concentric sectors getting worse the FARTHER INTO THE DISK YOU GO? A 'fresh install' will be faster... just on geometric physics alone of HDD's!

Question: What's it LIKE being known as a pack of utter bullshit artists online now, & especially after a DECADE OF SOLID CRAP along the lines of "Windows != Secure & Linux = Secure" horseshit... hmmm??

I knew the day would come when Linux (or variants like ANDROID) would take "top spot" on SOME computing platform (in this case, smartphones) & get "NUKED" as badly as Windows does due to its MASSIVE DOMINANCE of the combined PC & Server world... well, that's day's here on ANDROID (a linux) on smartphones).

It's simply because malware makers in general are JUST LIKE PICKPOCKETS, & go where the "easy meat victims" are, which IS where "the masses" go. They get better "ROI" for their creation of their bogus machinations that way... just like shooting ducks in a pack in the sky.

I can't tell if you accidentally linked the wrong article, or were doing a pretty clever gamble... :o

Google blatantly advertisers Chrome on their websites and YouTube (but only to IE users.. heh), they have billboards and TV advertising campaigns, they pay OEM's, hardware manufacturers and shareware/freeware authors to bundle Chrome with their products, they aggressively try to put Chrome on your computer if you install any other software from Google, they pay makers of Angry Birds to have Chrome-only HTML5 version of their game and make websites that purposely only work with Chrome. They game and spam other search engines like Bing too.

Seems like they went full in and do whatever they can to get that market share. Even supporting CISPA.
