  1. Thanks, Rob! on Rob "CmdrTaco" Malda Resigns From Slashdot · · Score: 1

    Hey, Rob.

I still remember first hearing about Slashdot from a fellow geek, way back then, and really enjoyed the stories you posted. I never forget the moment I (and all other readers) read your proposal, that was indeed a very special moment. I for one will miss your presence on this site, and hope to see your submissions trickling through the system sometimes.

    Cheers,

    Shameless copy from wikipedia:

Cobalt green is a translucent green pigment made by mixing cobalt(II) oxide and zinc oxide and heating. It was invented by Swedish chemist Sven Rinmann in 1780. Although it is stable and can be safely mixed with other pigments, it is rarely used because it is a weak pigment for its cost.

While the timeframe is correct, the sentence in the posting (to me) suggests it's an american invention...

Sorry for the slightly off-topic, non-american-centric post. Now please continue enjoying your duplicates^H^H^H^H^Hexiting new stories and comments ;).

  23. Re:FreeBSD, NetBSD, OpenBSD? on FreeBSD-4.0 Release Candidate Out · · Score: 2
4.0 RC is not a stable version, yet. The model is roughly like this: 3.4 is the latest stable release. Development is done on the -stable branch. The idea is that only conservative changes are made in this branch. 4.0 is the first release in the 4.x series, but it's still a release from the -current branch. Consider this branch to be like an odd-versioned linux-kernel: it could be stable, but major changes occur every day, so things might break. Somewhere near 4.1 the -current branch will become the -stable branch. That's the time for most people to start using it. Summary: if you want a really stable system, try 3.4. Once you learned a bit about FreeBSD, try 4.0. It's more sexy, but also more dangerous.

It's worth sponsoring that.. That (and because I'd like to support the Project) is why I have a subscription on the FreeBSD CDROMs from Walnut Creek.

Well, part of it is production costs. The rest is donated to the FreeBSD Project. Open Source projects need funding, too. And consider this: is every Linux distribution you can buy on CD made by a company that did an IPO? Who do you think released Red Hat 5.2? That was way before the Red Hat IPO. IPO has nothing to do with it, as far as I can see.
