Linux on the iPod
An anonymous reader writes "Linux Devices reports that Linux now runs on an Apple iPod. Further information about the project can be found on the Linux on iPod Website." Still lacks features like power management and firewire support, but it's still a cool project. CT Ok it's a dupe. But it's still neat!

You don't need to be a Kreskin [amdest.com] to predict Linux on the iPod's future. The hand writing is on the wall: Linux on the iPod faces a bleak future. In fact there won't be any future at all for Linux on the iPod because Linux on the iPod is dying. Things are looking very bad for Linux on the iPod. As many of us are already aware, Linux on the iPod continues to lose market share. Red ink flows like a river of blood. FreeBSD is the most endangered of them all.
Let's keep to the facts and look at the numbers.
Linux on the iPod leader Theo states that there are 7000 users of Linux on the iPod. How many users of Linux on the iPod are there? Let's see. The number of Linux on the iPod versus NetBSD posts on Usenet is roughly in ratio of 5 to 1. Therefore there are about 7000/5 = 1400 Linux on the iPod users. BSD/OS posts on Usenet are about half of the volume of Linux on the iPod posts. Therefore there are about 700 users of BSD/OS. A recent article put Linux on the iPod at about 80 percent of the Linux on the iPod market. Therefore there are (7000+1400+700)*4 = 36400 Linux on the iPod users. This is consistent with the number of Linux on the iPod Usenet posts.
Due to the troubles of Walnut Creek, abysmal sales and so on, Linux on the iPod went out of business and was taken over by Linux on the iPod who sell another troubled OS. Now Linux on the iPod is also dead, its corpse turned over to yet another charnel house.
All major surveys show that Linux on the iPod has steadily declined in market share. Linux on the iPod is very sick and its long term survival prospects are very dim. If Linux on the iPod is to survive at all it will be among OS hobbyist dabblers. Linux on the iPod continues to decay. Nothing short of a miracle could save it at this point in time. For all practical purposes, Linux on the iPod is dead.

You know it's going to be a slow news day when they're duping articles that are still on the front page! Sheesh...

I like the idea of this, but I am not sure how useful a machine like this is. The viewport is very small [but you can remote X11 in the future, I imagine], you'd have to make your own keyboard/mouse work with the remote, etc.
That being said, using the iPod as a wearable could be interesting

That's it! CmdrTaco is viewing Slashdot on the screen of an iPod running Linux, which is why he never noticed that the story he's about to post was posted a couple of hours ago - the screen is too small to see them!

Duuude...staying on topic for even a single reply is just gonna encourage them to post even more dupes - "well, they still discuss the articles, it can't be that bad.." If we make every dupe story nothing more than an endless string of "DUPE" posts and trolls, with not a single tiny shred of redeeming conversation (i.e. nothing more than a total waste of /.'s disk space and bandwidth), *maybe* the ed's will actually take the time to read the last 3 days's stories, all right there on the front page, before they post a dupe.

I like that Linux is beeing used on more and more hardware. I even have a TV-encoder which runs Linux 2.2, it acually has a sticker on the side that said that. It is used by Norways largest ISP, so its good to see that Linux is getting a bit more commercialized.
Note to self: get smarter troll to guard door.
Good grief, moderators. Where's your sense of humor? I mean, if the poster was trolling about BSD, then you should mod it down. But he was making a joke! I thought it was pretty stinkin' funny, too.
I don't like to complain about moderation, but this goes to show that everybody should actually read at least some of the post before determining that it fits the "troll template".

It's Open Source. People work on what they want, not what some business wants, or what their manager wants them to work on (for the most part). Not everyone who writes OSS cares about bringing Linux to the masses... maybe they'd just be happy enough to bring it to their iPod.
If you want to move the Linux community towards your vision of progress, you can donate to projects, work on them, or even hire people to do so. Not everyone has to share your vision... but the beauty of it is that you can have your own.

When he went to filter out Katz stories he must have set it so that he's filtering everyone but his own.
Or the form os slashdot spam?
Less is more !
All the Slashdot editors/writers/bots (whatever they are) have to do is:
1)Read submissions of stories. A simple keyword comparison could mark likely duplicate stories before they even get delivered to an editor.
2)Put stories on the front page. Again, a simple keyword check on clicking submit would prevent duplicate stories.
AAARRRGGGGH. Combined with the increasing delay between something happening and it appearing on Slashdot and decreasing quality of stories, why do I keep coming back here? For the comments I suppose.
"Wouldn't it be cool if you could run a cluster of these?"
</obligatory stupid joke>
Here's my suggestion, once an editor notes a duplicate story, change its category to "dupe" then allow users to filter out "dupes" from their pages (haven't seen a JonKatz rant in years...). Or would this get rid of too many ad-views?

From the FAQ:
3.3 Is there a OGG player
The Tremor player is running at about 80% real-time. Apparently an update is on the way so hopefully that will provide some speed-up.
I've read on other message boards that the Ipod batteries can't be replaced. Does it mean that the ipod is in fact disposable? Has slashdot ever covered this?
A man can smile and smile and yet still be a villian. Should we not attribute malice where incompetence will do?
Can we compare free software to propriatory software elswhere to imagine where this will go?
Propriatory software:
Free software
So what you have is a 10 gigabyte system that you can walk around with running free software. While MP3 is a propriatory format, OGG will work just fine with 10 gigs. What kind of interface does it have? Fire wire? USB? I can imagine all sorts of cool things you can do with that, such as rig any piece of hardware you want to it. The thing that is staring you in the face is that linux was ported to the device in the first place.
Craftsman is making a new line of hammers made entirely out of wood.
You are not looking at a wooden hammer in the iron age, you are looking at a V2 in the age of black powder and cannons. While you are busy thinking about busting down walls with projectiles, others are figuring out how to get to Mars.
DMCA, Hollings, Palladium. What might have sounded like paranoia is now common sense.
iPod + Ogg Vorbis = Kick Ass!!
If Apple won't do it, then let the OSS community hack at it. Either way, we get what we want from this. See the quote in my .sig and see who's eating the core right now. Part of the greatness of open source is the freedom to do what you want with it, whether it benefits the whole community, benefits only yourself, or is purely done for the geek factor. That is the freedom (as in speech) if this software. This may not be good for Linux as a whole in the long run, but it sure is good for those of us who want to use other music formats on our iPods and not have to be subjected to Apple's whim.
Cheers. :)

Is it possible for apple to bring some sort of DMCA related charges to this project? Not that I think this would happen, but is it possible since they mention that the iPod's architecture is closed sourced?
Kind of stupid to use a software mp3 player when somewhere there is a chip that plays an mp3 directly. Must get a horrible battery life with MAD. Still, there are interesting uses for 10G drive and firewire port.
iRIP - connect directly to a firewire CD drive and siphon off the tracks
iBurn - well
iSwap - connect to another iPOD and synchronize music collections.
The reason this story was posted to the front page twice is that people like me, who have all the (Apple) topics blocked from view (this is supposed to be a geek/hacker website, for gods sake!) will still see news about it. I scrolled down the front page and no, I didn't see the first posting of the story.
(I know, mod this to flamebait. Anything that picks on Apple should be marked flamebait because Apple zealots are such little torchboys.)
How funny and fitting that my post was modded as redundant, seeing as how I linked to the story that my comment was commenting on (not the previous story). So I guess it was truly redundant.

real mature. this is the best response you can do. well, i have to get back to work, because i have a job.
My problem? I was perfectly gruntled, until some numbnuts came by and dissed me.
For the reasonable fee of $10 per story, I am offering my services to the editors of /. as a proofreader and duplicate checker. Additionally, I will assist if necessary (at a negotiable hourly rate) in adding code to automatically send the article blurbs to my wireless device. I am unable to proofread overnight, so that will have to be covered by another shift, or written off as "happy slashdot error time."
I cannot guarantee 100% error correction, but I will stake my job on significantly decreased rates of grammar and spelling mistakes, and far fewer dupes.
I would also like a T-shirt that says "I work for slashdot".

Yeah! Look at the mindshare Linux on the iPod is gaining... Two stories in one day on /. about it!
Mark V. Shaney ?
--- "I didn't think anyone would understand it" -Prof. Bob Muller
It may seem trivial, but the idea of being able to load Linux on various devices ultimatly makes sense. Just recently on /. an article was posted about IBM considering Linux as a replacement to AIX.
Now just consider many different devices running various configurations of what is essentially the same core IO kernel.... imagine how easily it will be to connect Mainframes to PC's, PC's to iPod's, IPod's to your car's diagnostics computer, etc....
Yes, it may seem a bit quirky right now, but it's little steps like this which eventually add up to one large step which makes data become easier and easier to transfer and share from one place to another.

I wonder what sort of effect duplicate articles have on the Slashdot Effect? I'm looking forward to that essay.
Yet another in a long line of projects designed to ruin something by slapping Linux on it. Now you too can go from XBox to paperweight with one simple install!
There's plenty of possibilities for added functionality for the iPod, some i'd like to see are: Couple of things I can suggest: - Space Invaders- that scroll wheel is a perfect input device for more games. - use of firewire to connect ipod to Playstation 2's i.link port. Hard drive and use in conjuction with Playstation DIVX player. Also could be used with Playstation Linux - Finally, with an mplayer port and a hacked firewire cable that could give video out (or audio and video through the audio out) you would have a mean DIVX player. Hook it up to any tv or monitor and enjoy 20gigs of movies!
