  2. Re:Monopoly growing? on Courts Overturn FCC - Return of the Monopoly? · · Score: 1

The Canadian phone companies are buying each other out, entering new markets, offering both land and wireless services, offering DSL, wi-fi hotspots, dialup internet, video rentals, and even talking about offering television over the phone lines.

This is happening all across the country, a couple of what used to be 'provincial' telco's, are now multi regional, and growing.

Bad enough when they were the only 'player in the game' in one town, now they're a player in multiple games in multiple towns.. sure there is a few options for cell service, dsl, and video rentals.. but your cable co is your cell phone co, is your ISP, owns the newspaper, and rents you videos, has about a dozen cable channels, and who knows what the f#ck else..

I think that fits in the growing monopoly title..

  13. Re:A loss from what? on Napster Business Model Not Generating Revenue · · Score: 1

Seem to all be selling for the same price..

I am imagining similar 'overhead', but I can't see any way that the Music big-wigs are 'dealing' on price..

Why would they cut anyone a better deal that someone else.. plus from what I've read, Napster has lot of their songs on 'rental', and not even for sale, while Apple sells them all.

But lets say Napster gets a better price, say HALF of what Apple pays, since its all an assumption..

They still have sold WAY less, and the Windows Media market is getting more and more fractured.

Maybe the AAC has a smaller user base in Mac users, but the iPod is the most popular player, and they are all buying from one place, iTMS, and not one of 5 or 10, or more.

  14. Re:A loss from what? on Napster Business Model Not Generating Revenue · · Score: 1

They are running at a loss since there is no REVENUE STREAM from the online Music Store.

These sites are paying the label like 80% of the take, and still paying for advertising, bandwidth, and the rest of the biz..

Steve Jobs admitted this, and he's so happy with iPod sales, that he is willing to lose money on 100 million songs, if he sells 1 million iPods.

Guess where the profit margin is? and what about Napster? they're selling a rebranded Samsung device? How are they expecting to make money there? BestBuy makes more selling the Players probably.

And when the dust all clears, all these bandwagon jumpers, are going to wake up and realize they missed another goldrush. The last one standing, Probably Jobs, will walk up to the Labels, and say "I want half", and he'll get it.

  15. I quit cold turkey once on Best Way To Beat A Caffeine Addiction? · · Score: 1

In my teens we would sit around the coffee shop drinking refill after free refill.

One night I lay in bed twitching, until five or six in the morning, only to sleep until the next evening, and awake with a horrible headache.

Right then I decided (foolishly maybe) to quit ala Trainspotting's Renton.. "one room which you will not leave; one mattress; tomato soup, ten tins of..."

Ok no soup.. but a couple days of hell later, I was free.. mint tea at the coffee shop wasn't as much fun, so a year of managing myself I decided I was allowed to moderate my caffeine intake, read: Drink Coffee!!

Here I am 30, with a coffee cup tattoo, I make espresso on my gas stove, and rarely drink horribly drip coffee. But some nights at work, I still hit the espresso machine until all I can see is light.. and I need four or five pints just to fall asleep..

Ah they joys of being an adult..

I'm sure as hell not admiring those kids.. the other day, while returning improperly fitting christmas gifts, I saw mother and teenage son, he longly gazing at the 10 karat cubic zirconia earring in the display case, while she looked around embarrassed that her lame ass white boy SON was shopping for giant ghetto pirate jewelry..

I guess nothing wrong with jewelry on men, but all this plastic 'ice' is a bigger joke than the term bling bling

  19. Videotron.com in Montreal on Have You Fought Your ISP Over Bandwidth Limits? · · Score: 1

I signed up with Videotron.com about 18 months ago, on the regular 3mbit/256 line.. No limits, then I started hearing reports they were going to cap the transfers monthly, but they didn't give a date.

One month I received a bill that was $110 over usual, for extra transfers. I called them right away, she waived it with no hassle, and told me this was my only freebie.
They had installed caps of 10gb dl/5gb ul per month. Yikes.

I played it slow for a couple months, my annual contract was almost up, and I was searching DSL lines, when all of a sudden, Videotron changed their 'extreme' high speed plan, the 4mbit/750k, thats costs $20 more a month, which used to get 20 gb dls/10 gb uls, now was unlimited again.

I switched right away. On my monthly statements I still get a daily tally of data transfers, and some months figuring out the 90+ gb I transfer @ $7.75/gig is up in the hundreds of dollars per month I'm 'saving'.

  20. In Canada on Building A Low-Budget TiVo Substitute? · · Score: 1

Tivo is not available here, but it seems more and more of the Digital Cable/Satellite providers are offering combo decoder-PVR boxes.

Good thing about this is they already know what channels you get, deal with all your listings. No calls, no updating, no programming.

I'm in Montreal, with Videotron, and they offer such a box for $650, plus $140 programming credit, that means a cheaper cable bill for eight months. So it costs $509, but there is no competition really, as this is the only Cable service in my area, other than the 5820 offered by Bell Canada, but it's a satellite box, and not allowed in my apartment building. The boxes for Videotron are manufactured by Scientific Atlanta, which has more info on them here.

I do believe other cable co's in Canada offer these, Quick searching turns up one at Rogersas well

  21. N-gage on the Nokia 3650 on Nokia N-Gage Cracked · · Score: 1

I read reports of this online.. checked some 3650 forums.. and within a few hours I was running sonic-N and puyo pop..

Limitations on the 3650 include the 4mb of internal memory, 1mb or so which is taken by the phone, but apps like Psiloc System Tools let you enable a 'flight mode' which requires you remove the SIM card, and lets you reboot with the telephone app disabled, providing more RAM available to the game.

While this is a bit sloppy, powering down, removing case, battery and SIM, there is another option, booting the phone in safe mode, by holding the 'pencil' key on restart.
This keeps your phone 'app' running, but disables extras that steal RAM on startup, like screensaver.

I have ROM's for 8 games, but I still am on my stock 16mb MMC card, so the larger games, over 3mb file size, wont fit.. need double the size at least, plus all my pics, contacts, and REGULAR GAMES, to unpack and install. new 128mb coming from eBay, so I can copy Tony Hawk over and see!

And as one sig file said.. 'My 3650 can play N-gage games, can your N-gage take pictures?'
