I find elegance in combining form and function, and when someone sacrifices function for form, I have to ask... why? Were they just unable to figure out a way to combine the two?

Architects and engineers learn this lesson early on. Apple's computers are a wonderful example. They tend to have lovely cases (if you agree with the their aesthetics) and yet they are universally more functional than the case that this article is about. I'm also impressed with Alienware's cases, and they too are functional.

Why should we laud someone who can't blend form and function when there are many who can?

That said, if this guy likes his case, then more power to him. I hope it gets him some attention, or at least makes him happy with his environment. But is it worth a Slashdot article, or should we look for someone who has spent more time on a more functional piece of computer-case-art?

Perhaps what's functional to you is a small box which barely contains the basic functions of a computer. To me, it's a large box, because I want to contain more functions - my workstation is enclosed in a 4U aluminum rack case with nothing special about it except the material it's made of. I really don't care what it looks like. This is because I'm a protorenaissancegeek, I have hardware and media and tools and batteries and other assorted crap scattered all over my desk. Unless I have a case mod that somehow stands out in spite of this crap pile, which somehow capitalizes on the mess itself, there's just no point in doing one.

But if you are the type with a clean desk, then an attractive case mod is useful if it just makes you happy. Happiness is the true metric of success in life, I think, computed with both your happiness and that you have brought to others. Obviously, if you shit on everyone else to become happy, you win, but you're a prick. So if your case mod makes you happy, and it's not hurting anyone (if you had to kill people to get their bones to build your case or something, then it certainly represents a significant commitment, but you're a bad, bad man) then I'd say it's a functional case.

Put another way, all that expensive plastic on Apple's cases is unnecessary. Making the cases out of aluminum is also unnecessary, though I found it to be a nice option on my case, which is about the size of a mid or full tower (in between) and has the power supply at the back. If it were any heavier it would be extremely unwieldy. They are making money at it though, so people are obviously willing to spend money on aesthetics. In fact, people are generally willing to spend more money on it than on the underpinnings, which is why it was okay that the G3 macs were so dog slow for most people. They could do most things in a fairly timely fashion, and they looked really pretty.

It's not that I begrudge the guy making art, but making art out of a computer (or a home, or anything which starts off functional) is generally judged on the basis of its form AND its function. In terms of form, I'm not terribly impressed with this, but perhaps some are, and that's cool.

In terms of function, it lacks even the original functionality of the parts he started with (he had to throw out the USB2 card, for example).
