hey, if you want ps2 on the road, this hack is a bit more than required. When it comes to portable video games the guy is no joke...
Actually, he did mention that the battery he was using was 9V with a rated capacity of 5400 mAh ( walmart.com has it listed). He also says the display and unit were drawing an average of 1.9A, so batterylife comes out to about 2 hours and 51 mins. YMMV:) As for heat, the total power consumption is at most 17W (1.9A @9V) so it souldn't be too bad.
Although some quick googling lists the PS2 power consumption as 45W(5.3A @8.5V), so I wonder about the 1.9 A for both the screen and PS2 - that would only give you about an hour of batterylife.
-- I've discovered a remarkable proof, but this margin is too small to contain it...
Er. 1.9A is quite a lot for these small LiIon cells, so there should be a lot of additional power be lost due to internal resistance. I doubt you can get more than 2-3 Ah out of them at that current...
I've been wanting to do something like this for a while but it's hell finding those tiny LCDs in a retail channel. Does anyone know where he's getting his from?
The local stero/electronics place has a number of LCD displays for use with in-car DVD players. They cost about AU$230 (~US$160) for a 5" and about $240 for 7". You can get a portable DVD player with a 5" display for about $230 as well and I expect it might just use a standard video signal for the display.
Why doesnt sony (with all their laptop, consumer electronics, game console & DVD experience) produce a device that is basicly a portable DVD player with PS2 guts. It would be able to play PS2 games AND PS1 games AND all different kinds of DVDs.
I think it would be a VERY hot seller. And with sony's experience in making portable devices like laptops I am sure they can find a way to get something resembling decent battery life out of this. Heck, they could make a car version like those car DVD players you can get now. And they could make a widget that lets the portable version plug into the "airplane seat" laptop power adapter that some airlines now have.
I think that such a device would be WAY more popular than this PSP crap.

I didn't see any mention of the battery life on the site, I can only imagine how quick those die. And I wonder about heating issues too.
Well, appalling, maybe ... from reading TFA. The schmuck drinks Miller. Bleh!

just hack it. That veck stuff is from iPowerweb, so his admin console should be located at http://sitename.com/vdeck
I've been wanting to do something like this for a while but it's hell finding those tiny LCDs in a retail channel. Does anyone know where he's getting his from?
It's a good idea to test the drive with a DVD you don't care about - you know, in case it gets scratched or something:

Sony is marketing this new PS2 as portable... their engineers should be ashamed!
As well, Sony does have a true portable PS2 coming out next year (I heard mid 2005... it keeps getting pushed back). Here are some pictures.
May be with his help Nokia will be able to break a line of ugly smartphones and N-Gage 2 will have sane design from start...

Doing this doesn't allow the buttons themselves to have analog function anymore, just on/off... What? You didn't know they were analog? They are! No, really! VERY useful you know!
Sarcasm drip drip.
Uhm, there _are_ several games that use the analog function in the buttons. Removing that is going to KILL gameplay for a lot of games.
Like, say, madden, or prince of persia, just to start. This step of the hack pretty much kills the system's playability for many games.
Not to be rude or anything, but, yes, the function is very useful, and often used... even though he doesnt see it.
He'll find out when playing GTA, which im fairly sure uses analog.
Then again, I could be wrong.
no
Pretty neat. That's all I have to say on that.
