The hilarious part is that this will do nothing for the hardcore botters and gold farming/char leveling firms.
The WoW hacking community is quite large, and detailed information is available freely on the internet about many of its mechanisms. This has led to the creation of countless private bots that are not released for mass consumption like Glider, and hardcore firms usually end up using such bots (which, by the way, run below the radar of Blizz counter-measures like Warden).
Go Google it yourself. Creating such a bot is not difficult for a good programmer. They are often not nearly as sophisticated as Glider, but they don't need to be since they're customized from the ground up for the firms on demands (and lack a lot of options that Glider has, but again this doesn't matter as these private bots aren't released for the masses).
So a small victory for Blizzard in the end imo. This won't change any of WoW's messed up economy on some servers, nor will it even remotely make a dent in the farming/power-leveling community.
To all those people who are yelling "LOL I DONT WANT WC3 GAMEPLAY" Look at the fucking videos for christ sake. It's a fast paced RTS just like SC used to be. How the fuck is that remotely close to WC3? Even WITH heroes it's nothing close.
Have you guys even played WC3? Battles last a long time with your units having 600-800+ HP. SC2 does not look to have that sort of battle mechanics at all.
Also to the idiot who wants a RTS/X-Wing/Bridge commander game all in one: Shut the fuck up. Such thing would offend SC Battlenet fans to such degree that they'd probably Zerg Rush Blizzards HQ and have their heads on a spike.
While Descent 4 made the list, I would rather have a Descent Freespace III.
That series was godly beyond measure. It did so many things right. Probably the best space simulation game ever. The dog-fights were intense. The capital ships were awesome, and after they added Beam Weapons, it was even more godly.
Please, someone revive this dead genre.
Please:(
Freespace was much more than an "inferior knockoff" as you would put it. By saying that, you are taking a lot away from two truly great games.
Freespace: The Great War did things never done before. Huge capital ships combined with very polished graphics and plot. It had a great interface, great plot buildup, and the whole thing was the right sort of "experience" that you can only get from a very select few games.
Freespace 2 was one of the best sequels ever created. Not only did it remain true to its fans, it added so much stuff that people wanted. Beam weapons, GREAT nebula effects, and GIANT capital ships. People would say graphics isnt everything but combined with the great plot and true 360 degrees of freedom in endless space, it was again, another great experience.
While hardcore X-Wing fans may call it "inferior", in the minds of many it is easily the equal, and even superior. It does belong on that list, simply because after Descent3, it was the only thing left carrying the Descent name, and some of its gameplay.
I'm a senior high school student. From the 7th grade I was seriously addicted to computer games. I always did decent in school. It wasn't until 10th grade that my parents saw a 'problem' within me. Too much games. Just like any concerned parent would, they took the computer away from me.
I do believe that solves the problem in some situations. But not all. From the time I first entered high school, I had a fire that burned within my heart. I had hope, I was optimistic, even hard working. I would sometimes try to control myself and not be so nerdy. But I simply couldn't. I just had to play AD&D. I just had to read programming books. I just had to talk about hash tables in chat rooms. There was no way I was going to avoid that.
Everyone deals with their problem differently. I see some kids in school that are really lucky. It's high school, and every boy thinks about girls. People may say one thing on the Internet, but the truth is after a while the lack of attention gets to you. After a while you start thinking why am I doing this? You look around you and see that kids your age are having fun. Not reckless fun, but fun still. They have their own little 'group'. They goto parties, date girls, or just go out with friends and have a good time for whatever reason. I don't have that luxury. It's not that I'm not a confident person. I used to be. But after a while i REFUSED to change myself to be popular. In my opinion, thats not how the world should work. But maybe thats a bit too hopeful of me.
That fire slowly died. I didn't even play games on the computer. I just sat there staring at things, making the minutes go by. I am doing the same right now. I have an English essay and seminar due tomorrow, along with a physics lab. I have not started any of those 3 said assignments. I just don't care.
I am in a middle eastern family living in north America. My parents are quite concerned. I can't talk to them what-so-ever. They are so old fashioned and closed minded that the thought of talking to my dad about girls and depression makes me want to curl up and die. He wouldn't understand. No correction, he would, but he would always give me advise that I can't use.
Forever have I been a letter grade to those around me. It gets very frustrating after a while. I could sit here and code for 14 hours, and my dad would come here and tell me to stop playing games. Yet all those around me are rewarded and applauded for the simplest of tasks.
But of course, no one cares about the boy who programs hours per day.
I used to do that. I have stopped gaming for fun. I have stopped programming for fun. Now the only thing I can do without being totally frustrated is to write. I feel some how robbed. My parents have never once confronted me and asked me if I am depressed. The only thing they ever cared about was a) my interest in becoming a Muslim b) my school grades.
I am not the only boy in my school that is like. I see plenty of very bright kids, borderline genius by my standards (I don't really consider myself all that bright though), who just 'waste' their time getting C's in school.
There will always be that wondering pack of people, looking to have some sort of fun or emotional experience in their childhood, before the adult world hits them.
"Piss break boss?"
"Again?"
"Yeah..uhm...my boys are having a..uh...hard time today"
"Ok..."
Minutes later, in the bathroom.
Ding!

I got the game to boot using a kernel debugger and a little trial and error. SoftICE revealed the installer makes a call to something in _vis.dll, which in turn checks to see if hl2_acf.nfo exists within the steam install directory.
Decompiled _vis.dll with DisC, replaced the function call to a new function that always returns true. Recompiled _vis with Visual C++, nogo, then tried with Borland and the game booted.
Posting a crack tonight."
Damn, Valve made a very nice decision it seems. 20 bucks says a hippie hands out crack for free at the door of Valve meetings.
Valve should get the war for The Game Company That Managed To Torture Its Fans By Having Code Stolen, More Release Dates Than Jerry Seinfeld Had GirlFriends, Leaked The Plot, And Gave You A Game You Could Download But Not Play Until They Let You
Award.
Wonder what the award would look like...probaly a figure of Duke Nukem.
The book my Koeing and Barbara Moo, Accelerated C++,
is an excellent starting point in my oppinion. If you have previous programming experience, i suggest you pick this up, rather than a 500 page primer. It goes through a lot of stuff and a suprising rate. It also teaches you some basic algo's and uses STL right from the start, not the sort of backward teaching some other books use.
It's very good, and i suggest you pick it up.
You might also try Bruce Ekels Thinking In C++, they can be found for free (both volumes) on his site. Simply google the title and it will take you there.

I for one welcome our Mars Orbiter hearing pig overlords!
This topic is obviously a fake. No one on slashdot ever had a high school sweetheart.

Oh those kinds of jerks..oops... *puts away vasseline*
Who cares? It will sell, and that is all that matters for them most likely.
Cant wait to see Sonic show off his Bling Bling.
I've a revelation for you: Slashdotted.
Insert obligatory "What if it was windows" insult here.
maybe when my english teacher forces me too. Might help the frustration.

What are you talking about? That was a programmed feature!
