.su Lives On, Stronger Than Ever
CWRUisTakingMyMoney writes "Yahoo! Finance has a story about the defunct Soviet Union's .su TLD. 'Sixteen years after the superpower's collapse, Web sites ending in the Soviet ".su" domain name have been rising — registrations increased 45 percent this year alone. Bloggers, entrepreneurs and die-hard communists are all part of a small but growing online community resisting repeated efforts to extinguish the online Soviet outpost.'"
It wasn't funny for the first week, let alone 3-4 years later.
It looks like all those "In Soviet Russia" jokes will be on-topic for once.

It's a small world and it smells funny; I'd buy another if it wasn't for the money; Take back what I paid (SoM)
pant.su is taken :(
If you take away their websites, the communists really won't have anything left lol.
Google's Super Secret Search Algorithm: SELECT @search_results FROM internet WHERE @search_results = 'good'
I've actually wanted to own a .su domain for quite some time, but I can't seem to find a registrar that'll do them to someone outside of russia for a REASONABLE sum. A lot of the ones that do seem to offer them want 3-figure amounts for some reason.
.su domains?
Does anyone actually know of a decent registrar that's not stupidly expensive for

The last we heard of the .su domain here on slashdot was when we were discussing Outdated Domains to meet their end. Like .um from that article, .su was high on the list for the chopping block. *Sniff* that article was one of my first submissions to be accepted on Slashdot...*tear*
.um... .su, ISP is throttled by you!

Anyone have desudesude.su yet?
They should change Sudan's TLD to .su... or give them another one.
web surfs you!
So much choice. -sigh- And so little time. Where do I go to scoop one of these domains. =P
It's funny to read and see for myself how you Americans are raised to be so brainwashed and don't even realize it :)

Tomorrow is Hitler's birthday I think... interesting guy... can't agree with his methods... but had some interesting ideas.

Just checked, it's available.
This space available.
Wow! A Yahoo link that should be safe to click on! Not that anybody will visit that link due to its prominent location in the summary.
The possibilities are endless!
The running joke is that "nas.su" should be migrated to "nas.ru", with "nassu" roughly translating from Russian as "will piss on" and "nasru" as "will shit on".
With all this AT&T and Comcast stuff, I think you can reverse those two lower case letters.
You know, there is a difference between trolling and pointing out the flaws in your reasoning. Just saying.
If you think about it, it's kinda odd that there is an *.su TLD at all. After all, back in the day the internet was essentially a U.S. military thing designed to protect military communications in the event of an *.su nuclear attack.

These domain names would really be appreciated by spanish speakers. "Su" means "yours" so the possibilities are endless!
Commie #1: I have finally perfected my new propaganda website! With the information in this site, and a suitable amount of traffic, we will crush the capitalist pigs and restore the glory of communism!!
Commie #2: What's the URL?
Commie #1: It's "capitalist-scum-die.com".
Commie #2: I don't know. I think it needs something a little extra. Let's register "capitalist-scum-die.SU" instead. Changing ".COM" to ".SU" will really take the site to the "next level".
Commie #1: PURE GENIUS COMRADE!!! Of course! The correct top-level domain is all that stands between us and glorius success! I'll get right on it!
They really should depricate this thing:

Immediately: no new TLDs
In 24 months: All registrants must have a migration plan in place or their domain will not be renewed after April 2010.
In 48 months: Shut it off and redirect all traffic to a machine that spits back a "service discontinued, see
In 10 years, shut it off entirely.
Extensions to deadlines will be done on a case-by-case basis.

Russia took over most "assets" of Soviet Union, such as the permanent UN seat. When Gorbachev resigned and dissolved the government of Soviet Union, he ceded all his power to the president of Russia.
Following the dissolution of the USSR in 1991-1992, Russia agreed to essentially take over for the USSR, albeit in a somewhat reduced form. Essentially, in return for taking responsibility for all of the USSR's international debt, Russia also inherited all of its treaty agreements (and its place on the UN Security Council). So the answer is yes, Russia took it over.
I'm perfect in every way, except for my humility.
The University of North Dakota might want thefighting.su
Freedom = (Meaningful - Coerced) Choice != (Speech | Beer^2), and sad sock puppets' bad mods avail them naught.
I wonder, somehow, if the CyberArmy ever had anything to do with driving .su registrations? I mean, we did have that one challenge where you had to log in from a .su domain (though you were meant to fake your reverse DNS, not everyone did that)... Not too many other reasons I can imagine wanting an .su domain other than vanity.
TBH given putins actions id say it was more rebranded, with job cuts.
IranAir Flight 655 never forget!
Fanfiction critics will be familiar with mary.su, and anime otakus with de.su.
The assets of the USSR were mostly fenced through London and Wall Street. I've heard George Soros shed a crocodile tear on this score as well as on thrashing the currencies in SE Asia in the 90s, but we pretty much prefer to pretend that much of the wealth of the nation wasn't stolen outright and fenced through our fuckheads so much as it was all just a Potemkin village ot start with.
The wheel is still in motion, though. The Chinese hold how much of our increasingly worthless paper again?
Is that where Richard Stallman hosts his web site? LOL Oh, I see its a .org
For young internet ignorants it's just cool to have .su - quite oppositely for people who lost their family members because of communist agression, opression, or for ones who directly faced repressions of communism.
.su - in memory of the root of all evil.
.3r - in memory of third reich? Yeah, that would be nice for right wing extremist, wouldn't it?
:)

In 1918 the USSR was the size of Belgium, including only the Moscow and St. Petersburg area. The whole Siberia and Far East of Russia were occupied by the USA, Canada and Japan. South, Ukraine, was hold by France, etc. Still somehow they manged to fight out these powers and unite the country.
In 1941 Germany, Italy, Hungary, Romania, Finland occupied the whole European part of the USSR. Chances of the USSR were pitiful. The victory was all but celebrated. Still we know the outcome.
The "Great Victory Victory in the Cold War" is from the same league. The territory of the "defeated" Russia is 4.5 times larger than the territory of the whole European Union. Russia holds the world stock of natural gas and oil, and other key resources.
The price of these resources has grown 10 times since 2001. The West is sucked in into the was which cannot be won. As result the West is approaching to the economical crisis and social unrest of an unprecedented magnitude.
Do not celebrate too early. .su still may hit the mainstream.
Russia also inherited the USSR's nukes.
(You don't think those conveniently "just went away", do you?)
Il n'y a pas de Planet B.
.su is to .sux
I'd wager that most of the 45% increase is down to domain spamming.

Unbreakable Union of freeborn Republics,
Great Russia has welded forever to stand.
Created in struggle by will of the people,
United and mighty, our Soviet land!
Sing to the Fatherland, home of the free,
Bulwark of peoples in brotherhood strong.
O Party of Lenin, the strength of the people,
To Communism's triumph lead us on!
...so I have to respond to this.
The Moscow/st. petersburg area is way bigger than Belgium.
The germans never got anywhere near the Ural mountains, so no.
Many countries hold natural gas and oil, so no.
Russia has a lot of natural gas, but it suffers from dutch disease. I would not expect grand things from them any time soon.
so what happens when icann decides that .su isn't valid anymore (they are already trying to phase it out)
.geek and .null
then your domain will be as good as
Most of the material assets ended up in the hands of whatever former Soviet republic it happened to be in. The Russian Federation ended up with most of the foreign assets, which was only fair, considering that they'd been paying the bills for the Soviet government for some time. In fact, it was their refusal to continue doing so that forced the USSR to close shop.
As for the intangibles: the Red Flag, the slogans, etc., those were just on loan from the parent enterprise, the World Communist Revolution(TM). They reverted when the local franchise was dissolved.
You just couldn't resist, could you? Guess what, apology or no, you're back on my list. Hope you don't want the UID anymore.
