In other news, The Pirate Bay settled with the RIAA/MPAA today.

In the agreement, TPB will pay RIAA/MPAA a licensing fee for every song they sell. RIAA/MPAA lawyers hailed the deal as ground breaking.

TPB managed to keep a straight face long enough to get out of the room before laughing themselves silly at the RIAA/MPAA stupidity!

See, back in the day, /. used to come up with one really good original April Fool's joke. It was like they crafted it over the course of a month or two, then popped it on an unsuspecting crowd. It was elegant, it was funny and it suckered lots and lots of people.
That evolved into the new philosophy of the past few years which is "if one really good joke was great, how about a bunch of really lame ones?" It's quantity over quality which, I guess, is what we want now.

YOu can now hook in to PB for torrents and download what you wish.
The downside is that since Warner bought the Pirate BAy.....there will no longer be any Warner Bros. titles offered there. Only stuff from the other guys.....

You know, I really thought it would go the other way. The Pirate Bay is really in a much more favorable position vis-a-vis liquidity and interesting content than Warner Brothers. Be interesting to see how the deal plays out and what members of the Pirate Bay end up on Warner's board of directors.

Me too. I was an AC here for years before I bothered to register, and the AF jokes back then were much, much better.
I'm laid up with a sprained ankle right now, and I was looking forward to today, for the laughs - could use some. This is lame. A lot of comments have been funny, but the stories just haven't been.

Step 2: Agree to the deal where WB takes control of your company (both assets and liabilities)
Step 3: Profit?!!

that and it was on digg yesterday 3/31/09... What are WB going to do now sue themselves? I have a feeling that TPB wanted this as an end result all along. They gamed the loopholes in the system long enough to grab the attention of the RIAA and MPAA. Once they "won" in court the media companies had no alternative other than to buy them out to stop them. I hope they asked for a billion.

Here's an idea for next year's April fools that would not only be well thought out but it would also cure you of your nostalgia for "the old /."
Slashdot should bring back Jon Katz to post a single article that makes it seem like he's returning to being an editor on an ongoing basis. Just for kicks, he should double the length of his normal post and make it about some absurd topic like how CGI animation is eliminating all the "Children's Entertainer" positions that are so needed by modern pedophiles. I'm sure he could ramble for about 40 pages on the subject, especially if he spends most of his time alluding to his (in)famous past topics.
Good, no? If done with the appearance of sincerity, it could be quite funny and would help you realize that the Slashdot of yesteryear had its share of annoyances and problems too.
Then there's my other idea to temporarily reverse the sorting order for posts. (-1: Troll) posts would end up on top and the sorting tools would allow you to filter out all those (+5: Interesting) posts. It'd be chaos. Absurdly beautiful and maddening chaos.

I don't know if you noticed, but that is the only Slashdot original April Fool's Joke. The rest (ThePirateBay + WarnerBros, Opera face gestures, Google CADIE) are just stories covered from other sources. It's like an index of AF pranks.

Anectode: When I worked at a (now defunct) chain music store in a shopping mall during high school, almost all of the music we carried which was actually worth listening to - what we would now call "organically" formed, genuinely talented bands and musicians rather than the flood of label-generated fluff which has been ongoing since at least the 1920s, was carried on one of the "WEA" (say "Wee-ah") labels, Warner, Electra or Atlantic. These imprints are all under the Warner parent entity, and the amount of music released on them which has withstood the test of time is fairly gigantic. I'll give a few gigantic, critically acclaimed and popular in the mid-90s pop/rock examples from memory that were on WEA labels: Led Zeppelin "IV", Bjork "Debut", R.E.M. "Monster".
The runner-up for quality recordings was easily Columbia, with music like Miles Davis and Alice in Chains consistently selling.
Let's not be so quick to paint the major label catalog in one broad stroke, there were/are a lot of real talent found there.

It's a colloquialism in British English that's used as a rough synonym for bollocks\crap\rubbish\arse.

Pants in British English are underwear instead of trousers, hence the negative connotations.

That's what I love about the Brits. Yes, we Yanks/Americans get all the crap for not speaking English properly. Yet somehow our Canadian friends to the north, who except for a few odd British spellings (colour) and a few strange words (ever sat on a Winchester? It's not a gun.) say almost the same thing as we do with an accent that's close to ours, yet they escape condemnation. And don't get me started on the Aussies, who would probably say some crap like this:

and we'd be expected to know that means "April Fools is pants".

But I digress. Really, you have to love the Brits. According to one source I found, saying that something "is pants" means it's of poor quality. So instead of saying

or

Actually I and others expect you to know it not because you should know British English but because "*something* is pants" is a partly a Slashdot meme. It dates back to an article run not too long ago in which a man set his banking password to "lloyds is pants", someone at Lloyds didn't really like this and changed it to "is not". So I guess all I really have to say is, "You must be new here."

That's what I love about the Brits. Yes, we Yanks/Americans get all the crap for not speaking English properly. Yet somehow our Canadian friends to the north, who except for a few odd British spellings (colour) and a few strange words (ever sat on a Winchester? It's not a gun.) say almost the same thing as we do with an accent that's close to ours, yet they escape condemnation.

I don't think anyone here would say anything like that here. It doesn't make sense to contract April Fools in any way. And now to go completely off topic onto underpants.
Someone will know what you mean if you said underpants or underwear in Australia but pants would be what it is the USA. More likely we'd call underpants undies (pronounced like dundee (without the d but with a trailing s as in that really bad movie with Crocodile in the title)). Women however can wear panties as well as undies. Of course, if they're white undies depending on your age you might call them bog catchas (named for the brown streak that can sometimes be seen).
As a general rule we're more likely to contract a word (sometimes) and stick an o or some kind of e ending on it (sometimes even an a). Examples like arvo (afternoon), undies (underwear/underpants) and sanga (sandwitch).

"Lame" is a good equivalent in tone and meaning. Incidentally I first heard and used this word, "pants", whilst at Uni in 1995 (IIRC). I heard it from a friend at York Uni and used it in Saint Andrews, possibly I was the carrier? For emphasis I'd use the phrase "big pig pants" ... language is great isn't it.

As my missus has said once or twice, "That hurts my brain". I'm just glad that i've managed to miss out on a lot of the "internet fads". When someone starts bringing out what i can only presume is "4chan speak" my eyes glaze over and i have to remind myself not to punch them in the face.

Good point. If it took long enough for a replacement to emerge (5000 crappy torrent trackers aren't a problem, 1 good one is), and if the buy out were small enough each time, then maybe it could be worth it. That seems pretty unlikely.

Jury is still out on whether it's a bad sprain or a fracture. The xrays don't show any fractures, but it isn't healing like it should be. Was at the doc this morning and he suspects I may have spiral fractured the joint. Apparently that doesn't always show up on xrays.

I've lost about five hundred bucks of income this week - self-employed right now, laid off a couple months ago - because of my clutziness ;( Almost five feet of snow this last week and I can't drive the bobcat because I can't operate the right pedal no matter how tightly I wrap the ankle.

Pain I can deal with (yeast byproducts, lol) but not being mobile for fear of screwing it up worse... cabin fever is setting in and so I'm posting on slashdot to keep from going completely crazy ;)

IMO the best April Fools jokes are those that are way out there, but still just believable enough to make you wonder for a fraction of a second whether there is any truth to them or not. If another source picks up on a joke and runs with it, that just lends more "credibility" to the gag and makes it even better.

I've always seen April Fools as a good way to remind people that one always needs to think critically about anything they hear reported as truth, especially online.
