Chased Off of YouTube, Leaked 'No Man's Sky' Footage Runs to Pornhub (vice.com)

An anonymous reader quotes Vice:I always feel a little dirty when I look at leaked footage of any kind, but rarely so much as when I brought up Pornhub yesterday to check out a video featuring the hyped space exploration game No Man's Sky... I had to go to Pornhub, as this corner of the web was the only place I'd been able to find the footage after it'd been yanked off of DailyMotion, YouTube, and almost every other video hosting site...

The PornHub video shows 21 minutes of footage with awful resolution, and none of it's particularly exciting to watch (which may say something about the game)...
On July 7, when the game was ready to ship, No Man's Sky creator Sean Murray posted on Twitter "I'm so incredibly proud of this tiny team. 4 years of emotions," then addressed the leaked footage on Friday, tweeting "We've spent years filling No Man's Sky with surprises. You've spent years waiting. Please don't spoil it for yourself..." A later Twitter post added "Take a break from reading about it, and picking vids apart. You can experience for yourself so soon."

    I say the article publisher simply needs to come clean. They were surfing PornHub for some really kinky wacked out space sex involving a gun and this video game suddenly appeared.

      I find it funny that Hello Games are saying "Please don't spoil it for yourself" when the video spoils nothing that hasn't already been seen before. I suspect they're more concerned that that most people will find it quite a boring game. It just makes them sound like all the AAA games companies pushing embargo'd games trying to maximize pre-orders and sales in the first few days before word of mouth spreads about how shit their game.

      Its obviously not a game for everyone. Fans of instant adrenaline filled action probably wont like it. If you're a fan of Elite, sandbox and survival games then you'll probably enjoy it.

      It sounds a lot like Fallout, only with a bigger universe, and less polish. I know several people who think Fallout is boring. It can be slow, and if you don't do research (on levels and what to pick when leveling), you may have to restart. In Fallout 3, I didn't google anything before playing, and ended up leveling to an un-playable state The next time through, I picked a better combination of offensive skills, mixed in, and did much better. For many, that would be frustrating. Frustrating is when I leveled up too well after, and could one-shot some of the hardest creatures in the game. It became almost too easy, when you picked the "right" skills to focus on. For fallout 3, that's melee and crit damage, with sneak when you have nothing that helps those. Eventually, if you sneak up on a deathclaw, you one-shot it with the melee bonuses and crit bonuses from the sneak attack. The "irony" is that you kill the deathclaw with a deathclaw claw.

      I searched for the game to check the release date (Aug. 9, FYI), and it sounds like the response from the developer isn't for this particular video. Apparently some people got ahold of "leaked" copies of the game (one person paid $1300 for it on eBay), and they are showing a lot of footage including reaching the center of the galaxy (apparently a major plot point or something). I think the developer is referring to those kinds of spoilers rather than this particular video.

      This is why no game gets money from me until there are:
      1) Reviews from non-bought-out and non-agenda driven reviewers. (I'm looking at you, pc-gamer and kotaku.)
      2) Actually released for a couple weeks to see how many show stopper bugs, and how reactive the company is to fixing them. (Hey, nothing goes out bug-free anymore, but if the company isnt quick to react to them, thats a very bad sign.)

      This is why I only bother with game reviews from Total Biscuit and Jim Sterling. They've paid the dues to make it clear to me they're not bought out. Especially Jim Sterling and Konami (he ends most of his gaming news videos with "Fuck Konami News: all the news fit to make you say fuck Konami".) I'm sure there are other truly independent reviewers, but I doubt anyone affiliated with a game review magazine.

      When I played for fun, I funned myself out of the ability to finish the game. Gaming the game was the only way to reach all the content. That you find tailoring your gameplay to discover more of the content a shit experience doesn't mean it's true for the rest of us. Stop being Gaming Hitler and let us play the way we want.

      What "experience" is there in Fallout 3 besides the combat? A tepid storyline with little room for deviation? I mean, the only variation between playthroughs is what happens in combat and how you build your character; the story is static.

    This really feels like viral advertising. None of it really makes sense to me any other way. From the explanations that are just vague enough to make you say "WTF?" before you go hunting for more info, to the fact that they banning the video, all the way to the person who posted the videos saying

    "There are more spoilers than you probably realize with this game," Daymeeuhn wrote in the post. "I'm only a couple hours in, barely touched a few planets, and already I've had many FUCK YEAH moments. On the one hand, I'd love to share those with you, but in the other hand, Sean is right... why not just wait and experience them firsthand? I dunno. The first videos I posted were perfect—they spoiled nothing and just showed a taste."

    Huh? There are spoilers here, but we didn't actually post any spoilers? Oh, but I should probably just go experience it firsthand, right? OK, I guess I'll run right out an buy a copy.

      They don't want people to see the game is actually an empty shell, full of broken promises.
      Can't have people cancelling their pre-orders.

      Developer previously stated numerous times that it would take "hundreds of hours" to reach the "center of the galaxy (he misspoke and said Universe earlier...)".
      This guy did it in less than 40.

      Oh and he didn't die a single time during those 40 hours. So much for "surviving a harsh universe".
      That's just the tip of the iceberg.

      But then again, what we are seeing is a Gold edition, they've already submitted 20-something patches on Steam that this guy obviously don't have. He could be missing a lot of stuff that's not activated yet. At least, that's what people on the subreddit is hoping and telling themselves.

      Murray said that for typical players. This guy is by definition not the typical player and quite likely rushed towards the centre to reach the bragging rights of that particular goal, after all finding a planet isn't exactly a unique feat. Thereby skipping most of the discoveries, lore or sheer "it's just an interactive screensaver but damn it's pretty so I don't care" moments.

      Mind you, people watch train footage. I've built the same repetitive, mundane, boring mob farms and whatnots as everyone else in Minecraft and I enjoyed every single block of it. So I'm pretty sure I will love No Man's Sky.

      Sixth sense is made better on the second watch. You watch the whole thing inferring that he's reacting with the world, and on the second watch you see the brilliant, meticulous attention to detail -- the stuff making you infer that, when in fact it is consistent and he is *not* interacting with anything.

    MundaneMatt Just had 2 of his videos false flagged by Sony of all people. Mind you, Sony is merely distributing the PS4 version of the game, so their right to DMCA mere discussion of the game before launch -- especially when it doesn't contain in game footage -- is a bit odd at best.

    But yeah, this suppression of pre-release footage is worrying. Combine that with an apparent Review Embargo and, well... I haven't been on the hype train for this one, but I do hope it's good.

      The Hello Games / Sony relationship is a little more complex than a simple distributor connection. Sony are, in effect, publishers of the game, for the playstation version. Hello Games are the publishers for the PC version.

      Sony is more than just distributing the game, they had NMS stands at E3, was it 2 or 3 years in a row?
      Sony is responsible for hyping the game as a $60 AAA title when it's just a small indie game.

      There was a LOT of hype about 6 months or so ago when a bunch of (highly manicured) gameplay footage was shown. The most annoying thing is that ever since then, every week or so a new No Man's Sky "Demo" or "Features Revealed" or "Updates!" video shows up in my feed, and it's always a bullshit rehashing of information and video from the earlier release. I agree with the general consensus that the only reason to apply censorship at this level is because the game is not that interesting or quickly loses appeal.

    There's been plenty of streaming of No Man's Sky on Twitch, in fact I watched 3 hours of it tonight on Steam.

    After said three hours I feel the devs are more concerned with people cancelling their pre-orders than they are with people spoiling it for themselves.

    Oh look, it's another planet that looks the same, but blue'ish grey instead of with more chicken looking critters with horns, but these ones have 3 three legs instead of 4.

    Yes, I did cancel my pre-order after watching said 3 hours.

      I'm finding there are some games that have too many bugs, or the gameplay isn't fun. Originally what they set out to do, is great and sounds fun, exciting. At some point something happens, business plan falls through, thought they could soak money from updates longer, slow development time etc.

      If a game doesn't have clear footage that shows me what I want to know and that I'm excited to try myself, I won't buy it. This game sounds like a flop, so I'm out.

      No offense man but pre-ordering games is what got us where we are today with modern game releases.
      Half-assed, rushed out the door and full of bugs that get resolved 2-3 Gigabytes worth of patches down the road.

      In this day and age, no one should be pre-ordering anything as it simply continues to enable the piss poor behavior
      of the game developers who have the " Just release it and we'll patch it later " attitude.

      I was thinking the same thing. That someone could actually watch three hours of somebody else playing a game sounds almost like a glowing endorsement of the game. I doubt that I could watch twenty minutes of somebody else playing games that I actually like.

      Learning about Twitch (from one of my teenagers) was my first "holy shit, I must be getting old" moment. My comment to her was "you are actually watching someone else playing a video game for hours on end?" to which she replied: "You spend hours watching other people play football, don't you?"       This reminds me of Starbound which was sort of a Terraria clone but with a scifi theme, when I tried it. There were some interesting elements but on a whole it felt bland. Even with thousands or millions of planets to visit there simply wasn't anything of value on any particular planet to make you want to explore it.

      My two cents -- the amount of "creation" (art, originality, ideas coming from another human mind) in the game is the same whether there are 100 or 100 quintillion planets. Imagine an artist making a fine house music song and then have the computer generate 1000 different remixes of it. The sum of those 1000 is not much more than the single original song.

      The second part, exploration and gameplay, changes the state of the game, but the new states are apparently not significantly different. It's like changing the filter slightly for one of the effects in one of the 1000 remixes.

      Those are my preconceptions about NMS, but it would be great if the game turns out to be much more than that.

      Yup, there are numerous problems with the design of No Man's Sky. Some find it boring, but the biggest one is that it doesn't bring anything new to the table:

      Q. Can you mine the ground and build your own tunnels like you can in Minecraft?
      A. No

      Q. Are there Player-Owned-Structures like in Eve Online?
      A. No

      Q. Does it have multiplayer groups like Elite: Dangerous?
      A. Technically it has multiplayer but since there is no grouping and no party quests it is kind of pointless play multiplayer. Worse, good luck even finding your buddies since everyone spawns in random locations across the universe! It will take you several day of real-time travel just to even meet.

      Over on /r/NoMansSkyTheGame, I found this extremely handy comparisons between Elite: Dangerous, Eve Online, Minecraft, No Man's Sky, and Star Citizen.

      Players share the same universe but start light years apart. There is no ability to group nor do party quests.

      IMO, basically Elite:Dangerous, Eve Online, or Minecraft does it better.

      Maybe someone has more up-to-date information?

      You talk about bringing new things to the table and then list a bunch of features from other games? I think the major selling points are that the universe and music are procedurally generated, and that you can travel between space and planets without loading.

      I am old to have teenagers and young adults and I dilike watching sports and like watching people play games. And not even the games you talk about. I like people play City Skylines.
      OTOH I do not like it live. I rather like to watch channels that are somewhat edited and that goes for almost all content, including TV.

      In the olden days (before my time; I'll get off your lawn shortly) people would have to take turns playing on a console gaming system. You would sit there and watch your sibling or friend play for a while, and then trade off. So yes, watching people play games is normal. And yes, it's harder to watch when it's something you enjoy (and are good at, and you cringe at the mistakes).
