  1. How difficult would this really be to do? on iCopulate Romances iPods, Executive Pong · · Score: 2, Interesting

I was thinking about it for a minute... This really won't be that difficult to do, in fact, fairly easy using open source software (Namely Linux) and a small general purpose embedded controller...

The database and file structure of the iPod is fairly well documented, so here is the base structure of the project, if some other people want to get one board we could get this done in a matter of weeks from start to finish:

Small Embedded PC with USB host capabilities (I'm thinking something cheap and ARM/XScale based)
Add in HFS+ support in the Kernel (Already been done)
    USB Mass storage driver
A few hours worth of specific programing

So, you would have a small box with the embedded controler with a small LCD and a few buttons hooked up the the serial controller of the embedded system along with two USB ports. When you plug two iPods into the ports they are both mounted as USB mass storage devices where you can read the iPod music database file and all the music files. The big problem is, most iPods are going to be too full to properly sync all the music between them, solution; Taking advantage of the fact that Apple now allows you to make on-the-go playlists, you would then be presented two options on the LCD:

    1. Copy Playlist
    2. Copy entire iPod Useful in the case of say coping a Mini to a 60 gig iPod photo.

Then just check each file to make sure there aren't any duplicates, skip over any files ending in .mp4 and then copy. Update the library of the iPod the files were copied to and you're good to go.

If anyone is interested in making this project happen I would love to help organize it:

Furthermore, ignoring the fact that it would be near impossible to get an accurate identity based only on the weight on a sofa, how is it really useful? My sofa knows I'm on it, what does it do for me? It can't really adjust any preferences for devices around me in a manner that is useful, I use my sofa for tons of diffrent uses, having guests over, reading, watching tv, surfing on my laptop, and all of those are would fail to benfit from my sofa knowing that I personally am on it. Multitasking: That need for constant stimulation can also keep you focused and on top of many things at once, having cocurrent projects going on, and several tasks. The main problem is it can be difficult to finish when they become tedious, as they often do, but it can be overcome.

I haven't messed with CDs in quite awhile, in fact, my new car doesn't even have a CD player, just a good old line in thanks to BlitzSafe. The ability to burn a CD is very weak to me, I read it as "We will sort of allow you to do what you want with your files, but we will make damn sure it is wildly inconvient." That just doesn't fly with me. I think the only way that the Real model would work is if they would partner with Creative or Rio give the ability to download to download to a portable player instead of a CD.

  16. Diffrent business models are scary... on Dell Takes the Low Road Regarding Ink Cartridges · · Score: 3, Insightful

Everyone please come down, this is self-regulating capitalism in action. It is well known fact that there are little to no margins in printers themselves. The way Dell is going to make up what is more than likely a loss on the printer itself is to sell printer cartridges. Think of it as a loan, they sell you the printer at or below cost so the consumer does not have to bite the bullet and pay for the full cost of the printer (And the manufactures profit). Consumers like it that way! People like a cheap upfront cost!

It is the exact same way with cellphones, look at the cost of a unlocked (gsm) cellphone compared to the cost of getting the same phone under contract with a cellphone provider that locks you into the use of that one provider. Granted, some people do go for the unlocked phones, but the vast majority are fine with a locked phone from the provider because it is the same phone but much cheaper. Same with DirecTV who eat a loss of somewhere around $200 for each reciever they sell. Oh, and it only works with DirecTV.

If there was a market for printers that used some sort of universal cartrage, someone would make it thanks to capitalism. If you want something close get a laser, there is much less focus on consumables in that market, but of course you are going to pay a much higher upfront cost. (I have a laser and personally I wouldn't use anything else)

If you don't like it don't buy an ink jet printer, and/or make the market known for a inkjet printer that is not subsidised and uses an open design for cartriges, but frankly gripping at length at how Dell is trying to screw the consumer with a perfectly legitiment business model (And one that most consumers like) is not productive and gets quite tiresome.

Here, they actually provide a DSL modem in every room. Well, just as I posted that comment, I looked up at my menu bar and noticed that an 802.11b network was at full signal strength. Turns out that they do provide a wireless network for in room use that was not mentioned anywhere in the hotel information. As I am on the 4th floor and have full signal strength, I know it can't be bleed through from the lobby, so this is quite interesting. I have never stayed at a hotel that provides such access, and I have to say, I like it.

They even let you check your front desk messages and bill on the hotel intranet website. I also found the pricing fairly reasonable at $10 a night, less than a PPV movie.

But, as I have a wireless network at home, wireless access has really grown on me. I have always assumed that concrete walls and metal doors make hotel wide wi-fi access for in room use more expensive, it would be very welcome. Has any hotel implemented such a system, or are there any other technical limitations that I have missed that make implimenting such a system too difficult?
