Does anybody remember the Slashdot article about some 'emerging tech' which, when detecting a flash, would fire an image backwards through a lens.. and thus project it for a brief second such that it was part of the photo? It was on here this year. If this was easy to do and not patented (it is), it'd be easy to beat speed cameras. Just flash back an image saying FUCK YOU.

No, anybody who thinks it's useless hasn't thought it through. I used to get free email access on my phone. So what did I do? Wrote up a script which sends me an email with each Slashdot story's summary. Not incredibly useful, but I find myself with 10 minutes every day (usually commuting) where it's just me and my phone, so I read them. Then when I get home, I can check the comments if I want. Also, if this service allows attachments - couldn't you download MP3s on the phone just by emailing them to yourself? Sounds good to me.

This. I'm doing a Computer Science degree in Australia and we're learning how to check user input... via JavaScript. No mention of validation on the server-side. No SQL injection prevention. It's a joke.

I'm not sure about over there, but here in Australia when one of my mates mobile carrier was fucking him around (charging him for things that didn't occur), and wouldn't sort out his bill, he simply didn't pay it. This went on for 3 months at which point they suspended his account (so obviously this isn't practical for a lot of us), but inevitably they gave in because he had handset repayments and they stood to lose a lot over it (though as did he, in terms of credit history). Thankfully they stopped jerking him around though in the end.

What'd I do? Took it back to the store and downloaded a copy. Fuck you, EA / Maxis. They're grateful they don't need the CD to play anymore and I'm grateful I don't need to worry about it getting wrecked like the previous one.
