I'd hate to think how religious people have raped your family and killed your parents
.. Huh? For starters, my parents are also religious.
but I think you're being just slightly paranoid
Not paranoid, cautious. Why would you give what is virtually complete control over the internet (I know I know, it's more than just websites but for 99% of the population it's WWW and Email) to a group who has external influences as powerful as religion? It's not that they'd definetely misuse it, it's just the possibility, even on a minute scale.
Ugghhhh. Does EVERYONE have to use this analogy when talking about discussions held here? To me, people like you who refer to trolls, spammers and first posters as "noise" are the one causing the 'noise' (or problem, as anyone else would call it)... it's not like hijacking an article to have a completely offtopic discussion about the moderation here is helping at all.
I personally browse at 0 - New comers (such as myself) posts show as 1, and I'm still interested in what they say. Some ACs (score: 0) have insight (some forgot to login too). By the time I read a story most of the crap is below my threshold. Sometimes I browse at -1 and a few of the comments are insightful, but the mods didn't agree (don't tell me to metamod, I'm 'too new' for that).
Yeah, because God knows what they will do to inflict horror and suffering onto the world with managing domain names.
They'll do whatever they want - for starts, JesusIsHitler.com would most likely go, albeit being a pretty damn funny religion-mocking site. Hell, if they wanted to be really fussy they could can Slashdot since your post used god's name in vein (and I said Hell - oops, sorry Slashdot)
Similar to your idea, I've thought about finding a way to strap a Wiimote to one of my old tennis rackets (very securely, ofcourse). Perhaps even take the head off and just have the handle (make it light and more indoors-ok). That'd make tennis rule.
That being said, I dont have one yet [December 7th Please Hurry]
Exactly; you can use linkto:mysite.com to find who has been linking to you
I don't know about anyone else, but this doesnt actually work for my site.. on closer inspection, it doesn't work on my friends URL either.. hell, it doesn't work for Slashdot either! http://www.google.com/search?q=linkto%3Aslashdot.o rg
Slashdot is a discussion forum. The power here is not timeliness, it's the audience.
This is completely true. A lot of the reason I visit Slashdot daily is to get some insight onto whatever the news is (even if it's not 'Breaking News').
I used to read Digg quite a lot, but I was a Slashdot reader first. Digg has basically become somewhat "mob rule" - regardless of how well-planned or well-argued a point is, if everyone on Digg doesnt agree is "dugg" into oblivion. Then, in every thread, you also have to guy spouting "Digg me down!", who, of course, has close to 100 "diggs" up.
Diggs threading is also a joke. Threads end up extremely long with people doing followups to followups.. but since it only supports a 'depth' of 1, it's just a giant mess.
So, Mr Digg User, you enjoy Digg while we enjoy Slashdot. I'm suprised you even have time to troll over here, considering how up to date and fast news reaches you guys!
Except for the fact that many slashdotters call bullshit because they do not understand the article, they do not believe that somebody has accomplished something simple because they cannot see how it would be possible, or misinterpret what is claimed to have been accomplished.
You realise the article was Slashdotted before the first post, right? How can you say we don't understand it when no one (including yourself) has even read it.
I wish they would ban LED display boards visible from roads. At one point trying to get out of Leeds (UK) on the inner ring road you're faced with a huge LED board above some club, and at night it ruins any attention you may have been paying to other traffic.
I hate the fact that in Australia, government roadworks actually use LED display boards to give information about the roadworks you're travelling through. I find they're either way too fast or way too slow, so they require a lot more attention and time than should be neccassary.
I find people more often use Limewire, which does not require uploading. That includes myself. I have like 300 gb of stuff shared on there, and yet no-one ever touches it. Same for my friends, no one ever uploads off them.. unless they share their porn;)
Oops, sorry, should've previewed before hitting submit. Here it is with paragraphs, so your eyes dont bleed.
How do a load of people who can't be bothered to pay the asking price for the material like everyone else innovate in any way?
How about material that isn't available though? For example, the majority of concerts are not released on DVDs. I was lucky enough to have one of the exact concerts I atteneded to come to DVD (albeit 6 months later). However, the concert I went to that DIDN'T, got bootlegged. Not only by me, but everyone I know who attended it.
I think one of the things piracy is "good for", if that expression is appropriate, is getting content that isn't available when you want it. For example, I miss a TV show episode (especially in a sequential show where there's an actual stroyline), what am I supposed to do? The DVD won't be out yet, so I go out and find myself a torrent. There's no other way. Perhaps iTunes *might* have it, but at this stage torrents are still superiour.
The same thing with movies, to a lesser extent. There is a massive gap between cinema showing a film and it coming to video stores (this is in Australia). So what do I do? Grab a copy of the DVD that's already released there (USA). Not sure why they dont do it at the same time, but whatever. Failing that, I'll sit through a Telesync of the movie if need be, just to see it. That being said, if I *like* it I'll still probably get it on DVD, but keep my 'pirated' copy, because it's so much more versatile - I have like 100 films I actually like on my PC, simply because it's so easy to load them up, or put them in a playlist for a movie marathon, or even better I can load DivX/XviD files STRAIGHT ONTO my Zen Vision M and take that with me, with or without AV cables, and watch it anywhere I want. I don't see DRMed files or anything like that allowing this, and it's not like it's fun ripping DVDs is much fun either, especially since they trying to keep stop us from doing it.
They're scaring away legit customers - for example, my Dad can no longer use his of buying a DVD from the store, then burning a copy for use and keeping the original safe and scratch free from the 3 younger kids. So, instead of buying DVDs, he tells me what to rent from the video store and I burn that. I suppose if one day we came across a disc that wasn't locked down to the wazoo he'd go and buy it like he used to, but until then, bad luck MPAA.

I remember it being on Slashdot before too.. Im not complaining, it's just usually someones shouted dupe already. Perhaps I saw it on Digg.. not that I go there..
This is either old news, or there is some other reason the website looks like it's from 1996.

Edgy is the name of the distribution's version. The headline is a play on words.
I thought everyone had one? Isnt it just part of the bone structure? I know I have one and the rest of my immediate family, I figured everyone did.
I was just about to build an all-new PC, then RAM prices skyrocketed. It's ridiculous, getting 2 gb costs like $70 more in Australia now.
