"Anytime we get wider acceptance of platforms other than Microsoft it is a good thing." I would say that is not nessicarily true. Anytime we can get a standard operating system on all computers, it's a lot easier to produce software for a larger number of people. If microsoft and mac users were equal, thousands of work hours would be wasted reprogramming everything to run in either operating system. Of course, whatever super OS would have to WORK, or you would never get everyone on it. Then, there's also the matter of monopolies and all associated evils. Just musing, now, what if the government controlled OS's, like utilities? OS's would still be made by a non-governemtn entity, but prices for THE OS would be regulated by the government in a way that is fair to the company's employees without gouging the users. but yeah, Google+Mac=win.

  18. Is 30 really such a small sample? on Researchers Find Clue to SIDS Early Detection · · Score: 1

"Time for a bigger study, I think" Unfortunately, Dead babies are hard to come by. The article gives 100 SIDS cases/year in canada, that's not very many, compared to the thousands of samples taken in your usual medical study. Even if Dr. Researcher were to somehow convince all 100 distraught parents of 100 dead babies to lend their child to science, he would still only have... 100 samples. The article cautions that 31 cases studied isn't very many, but that's 30% of the average annual SIDS occurance rate in canada. 31% is a much bigger slice of the study/sample pie than a study of other diseases might get (2,000 cases out of how many million cancer patients?) A bigger study, I'm afraid may not be quickly forthcoming. I, for one, would certainly hate to be the guy that goes around the nation, asking distraught parents if he can borrow their baby's body.

  19. Re:Lets be friends? on Tackling Global Warming Cheaper Than Ignoring It · · Score: 1

heres how i think this will go down, to the advantage of the human race. We will ignore global warming for as long as we (the voting majority) can afford to stay comfortable on an individual level without any action. By that time, the standard of living of basically everyone will be at risk inside of a generation. We'll see a rapid shift in public opinion, and what was 50 years of no spending anywhere will turn into 3 years of a major percentage of the Gross Global Product going into global warming. The nessicary unification of national interests will leave us more united, and better able to handle the bajillions of refugees storming out of areas that we were too late for. Then we buckle in for the next 10,000 years and wait for it to go away. OPTION B: Ivory Coast floods, UN suggests global focus on climate, US takes the moment of distraction and invades a sandy nation, ostensibly to "save the rest of the world from all that oil". That particular sandy nation will, of course, have WMD's. World dies.
