I am amazed to see the number of posts here from people who are readheaded and agree with the story. I never really thought about it before but I don't think I'm more sensitive to pain, just definitely require more anathesia. So I guess I concur with the results of the study. At the dentist I just skip the novicaine when possible since it doesn't really work anyway. With my wisdom teeth the tylenol with codeine was completely ineffective. I get nothing from regular doses of tylenol either. Ibuprofen and aspirin tend to work though. I once woke up just after a surgery when I should have slept for at least two more hours, and I do tend to bleed a lot. I seem to have a fairly high pain threshold I've been told. Not sure about the alcohol or drugs though since I rarely drink and haven't tried drugs.

And to think, these are all because of my hair color? Wow.

Its funny you mentioned this. I experience the same thing. The dentist would always give me three or four shots and I could still feel the pain until a few years ago I finally said just don't give me any. They looked at me like I was mad, but did it anyway. Now I only have novicaine for things that are really deep and only if after they begin to work on it I am in great pain. I still feel the pain, but I guess I tolerate it better than most. And yes, I'm a redhead.

  8. Quality and Cell phones on Camcorder Jamming Devices Announced · · Score: 2, Funny

I really don't think further deterioration in quality is going to hurt the pirates. Its not as if their current versions are without considerable disruptions. The only way to effectively stop people taping movies is to find a way to completely disable the ability of a camcorder or other recording device to function. And to be effective it would have to work in all types of theatres, and be cost effective enough for even the smallest theatres in remote countries to afford. Or maybe even give the technology to the them for free.

While they're at it, I hope they block cell phones too. The last couple of movies I went to, people actually took calls throughout the whole thing. One guy took five of them!! And of course he had one of those cutesy ring tones.

I may be way off base here, but the way I am understanding it the user won't be interested in the Source part of Open Source - but they will be interested in the Open part.

In other words, they're tired of supporting BG and his monopoly and other big companies and would like to go with Free, open source software as an alternative. Kind of like buying and listening to indie bands instead of supporting RIAA and the other big giants, but not knowing or caring anything about how to play guitar or make the music themselves.

Freeware would do it, but I think that the asker is looking to show off the best of open source projects for a reason and is trying to make a point that open source stuff in particular is equivalent/superior to other software. Who knows? He probably just got an idea in his head and decided to run with it. Plus he gets the thrill of having his question on ask /.

Have they ever heard of ceteris paribus? Obviously not all of the other variables have stayed the same in this instance to allow them to analyze whether there is a relationship between the two. These services weren't really established a year ago. The number and effectiveness of free file sharing networks has changed, the availability of broadband has changed, the economy has been in an upheaval, the amount of good music seems to be decreasing, and this list goes on. Many of us could come up with dozens of reasons why the actions of the RIAA and others have likely NOT caused or even made a dent in the use of pay P2P sites. The fact that one event followed another means nothing!!!

  17. Re:What the hell are these people doing? on Students Outpacing Teachers With Online Skills · · Score: 3, Insightful

I just have a few small comments regarding your comments.

I would argue that we would be better off exposing these kids to music, drama, or the plastic arts rather than putting computers in their classrooms.

You might be right in some ways, and the other subjects you listed are valuable to teach, but I think you are forgetting the value of the internet for research. You can't take the computers completely out of the classrooms. The resources available on the internet outpace those of a small school library millions of times over in the amount, quality and ease of information provided. And students should have access to the web for research. Otherwise they will not learn the power of the web for research, may not have as complete of research as those with net access, and will suffer if their library is underfunded. We can't pull the computers out of schools. I could argue strongly though that the way that they are being used in schools needs to change.

We do not need to teach computers to children in the schools! This is not a "life skill" we need to spend very much time on.

We may not need to teach a manditory computer classes in schools, but I think that it needs to be an option for those who haven't used them before. The class probably wouldn't need to take a whole semester. Perhaps a week, maybe even to occur before school starts similar to the way that ESL students come and focus on learning English before school starts. MOST kids will have more knowledge than the teachers and have used technology all their lives, but something should be offered for those that haven't. It needn't disrupt the other kids.

  18. Not Available - We have trees! on Why You Don't Have a Broadband Connection · · Score: 1

Broadband is not readily available in our area. And even where it is, its not an option for anybody who has many trees on their property. It's because wireless is the only option offered. They've placed equipment on select large buildings such as an elevator or water tower near where we live. Apparently the signal doesn't go well through trees. Thus trees on our property=no broadband for us. Even if we could get it, its $60 a month plus about $250 for installation.

So the only option we have left is satellite, and we can't afford the $800 up front and $90 a month. I can't say that even if we could we would get it. It's just rediculous to think that we can't come up with a better solution. They've laid fiber otpics cables across our whole damn state. Perhaps we can use that, or maybe something through the REC's power lines?
