Been there, done that. Unfortunately, at work I am stuck with Windoze, and installing such wonderful programs as split are strictly prohibited by our preventer of information services department. Named pipes are wonderful in *nix, but in Windoze, "It just doesn't work".

I will keep this in mind when the backups of my home PC go over 4G. Thanks.

I had similar experiences. I have used both nVidia and ATI cards in my Linux boxes. While the nVidia cards were supported fine in all distros I used, the cards themselves kept frying and always had to be replaced. I replaced my fried BFG card with an ATI and it worked fine. On my arcade cabinet, I use an ATI based ArcadeVGA card to drive the Wells/Gardener arcade monitor, and it works fine with Lincade.

I got the slikstik too. Expensive but sweet. The W/G 9200 arcade monitor and arcadevga card were also musts, as well as the tornado spinner for Tempest. While I could have built the cabinet (I made everything from raised panel kitchen cabinets to bedroom furniture), setting up the controls to work well would have been a major project. So I bought cabinet from SlikStik, the monitor from W/G, and the arcadevga card, then installed Lincade. Truly sweet!

I had a dual boot system with Windows and Mandrake on it. One day, the keyboard stopped working in Windows, but worked fine in Mandrake. For weeks, I couldn't figure it out. One day, while pressing lots of keys, a few characters appeared if I pressed enough keys, but I still couldn't type anything.

I was ready to format and reinstall again when I remembered something that was a PITA at work:

    The stupid "sticky key" feature.

I clicked into control panel (the mouse worked fine), and found the sticky key setting. Sure enough, it was set so you had to hold a key down for 5 seconds before a key would register, thus the random keys appearing. In Windows, if you hold down a key too long (like when playing a game), a dialog box appears asking if you want to enable this "feature". It is very easy to accidentally enable it without knowing about it, and Windows gives you no indication it is on.

If you have keyboard problems in Windows, check the sticky key settings.

  17. Re:Don't count your chickens too soon. on Motorists Sue Over 'Hot' Fuel · · Score: 1

I do. When gas prices went up, I thought it would be a great idea to get a motorcycle for my commute ("but honey, a Fat Boy gets 40 MPG"). Then I realized it was a waste, since I still have to pick up the kids. Short, cold-start trips are what actually uses the most gas. I learned this when I had a 44 mile one way commute with a V8 Camaro. After getting tired of the traffic and gas mileage, I switched to public transportation and only drove my Camaro a few miles to the mall, where the bus would pick me up. Surprisingly, I still had to fill up almost as often, even though I was driving a lot less. It seems most of the gas in an average commute is used in the first few miles.

I have seen this in other cars too. A Honda Civic I had dropped from the high 30's MPG to the low 20's when I started having a short commute

I have an S-10 which has the heavy duty towing package, big motor, etc, and I use all of its capabilities. The problem is it doesn't have enough space to pick up my kids, etc. I just need a bigger truck, both in bed size and cabin size. All of the small trucks only have a 5 1/2' bed with the crew cab option, so I need a bigger one. My next truck will be the Silverado Hybrid when it comes out.
