    However, we know the outcome of that: a bear chews their face off and NFS has a pile of lawsuits on their hands for claims of being negligent in the face of danger, no matter how insignificant the event called it was. Which also means more tax dollars tied up in court on top of calling out the rescue helicopters and NFS commandos.

    The government lets businesses off the hook all the time. Shouldn't be too much of a stretch to do the same thing for the NFS...especially since someone is taking it onto themselves to do something they have no business doing in the first place.

    As for the bear...he's my hero!!! If you can get the body back...ship it back to the family collect in the nicest coffin you can find. Everyone wins...you're creating jobs for the economy...the family will remember not to be stupid like this anymore and we all get another listing for the Darwin Awards. The last one is the most important thing!

    A bill for a helicopter may not cure stupidity, but it will reduce its ability to afford to go there the next year.

    Very true. Used to live in Arizona. People would drive into low lying areas which would flood...get stuck and call for help in getting rescued. After years of this happening...the state passed a law called the stupid motorist law to make those who are stupid pay for their rescue and be ticketed. The stupidest thing...people still do this and complain about having to pay up after being stupid.

    Personally...I wouldn't rescue them. They and their kids can die from their stupidity...means taking them/future progeny out of the gene pool for the betterment of society. Could never understand how this could happen...but then I've never understood how someone would actively work for something which screw them over by the hope of they would be rich/powerful.

    When he finally came off the Zoloft, he had to be weaned off it, a little at a time. It look months IIRC.

    If that's not physical addiction, I don't know what is.

    Buddy of mine was on Xanax about 20 years for about 2 months. Had to be weaned off of it slowly. Remembering him calling me at 2 AM screaming that a giant dog was trying to kill him during night terrors. That evening we'd watched Cujo. A week later...he thought he was okay and watched "From Beyond". He called again screaming that everybody in his night terrors had that thing coming out from their forehead. The lesson...never watch horror movies with anyone on depressants and make sure your buddy can't call you when whatever is eating him.

    I have to agree commercial radio sucks. Was in the business for about 20 years...so I do know what I talk about. On the other side...I do listen to commercial radio outside the US on the Net. This doesn't suck...because they don't play 20 minutes worth of commercials every hour and most of the commercials are professionally produced...rather than Jim Joe Bob who owns the business cutting his own.

    It would be easy enough to implement an alphanumeric password on a keyboard that's always a different shape / place on the screen. Or just instruct users to wipe their hand across the screen a few times on public touchscreens - maybe include a small microfiber cloth attached to the kiosk / ATM / whatever so clean it with.

    Knew about this idea many years ago from spy movies/police shows. The cops/spies needed the combo to open a door/safe/whatever...so they blew/sprinkled dust on the keypad and got in. Too bad people haven't been paying attention all these years and guess it's a slow day.

    Having worked in computer support in years past...it's not that they don't have an anti-virus...it's that it's several years/decades old and has never been updated. For instance...many of the people who brought their computers into the shop had been using the crapware which came with their PC. Had the hardest time making them understand that if they wanted to use it...they had to pay for it or go search for a free version on the web. Of course...for $45 (the hourly rate back then)...I was more than happy to download and install it for them. Even then my boss wasn't too happy with me...since they thought I should be hawking their over-priced boxed version...plus the hourly rate to install/set it up for them.

    Having quit this job at 2 months after this manager stepped on my last nerve...saw him in an office supply store which was going out of business on the sales floor. Ended up buying a $150 office chair from one of his co-workers and watched him lose his job a week later.

    Guess karma was an additional benefit for this tool. Since he had just gotten a mortgage as well about the same time as I was hired at this job...wonder if he was living in a stove or refrigerator box. Couldn't have happened to a better guy...especially since I found he had treated a friend of mine this way in the past.

    I have an Asus EEE 701 4G Surf with a 7" screen/no webcam and 1 GB of memory that will run either XP/Linux. You can also find them on Ebay between $75-125 US.

    With several netbook versions of Linux...I can make any computer act like Android...except for the touch screen function. I can even rotate the screen and use it as a book reader.

    The reason the military doesn't want their own people to see the wikileaks documents is because it doesn't want them to realize what a complete farce this war (and by extension the war in Iraq) is. They're probably worried that there would be a big drop in morale if the service people on the front line knew that they had been sent to war by an administration that just didn't care about success, as long as their friends at Haliburton and KBR got fat contracts.

    As an old college professor pointed out many years ago...a little knowledge is a dangerous thing. Whoever acquires that knowledge might actually use it in ways/methods different from what those who are against the knowledge getting out.

    Not sure if it would change the mind of any military personnel...but it might give them pause to consider that immoral/unethical governments/corporations/individuals are getting rich/powerful from their sacrifice. As in Vietnam...the troops in these two actions know it's as much of a stalemate as the public back home. The only difference between the two factions is one has committed war crimes by following orders and the other is reading about it.

    I am sick of hearing "political analysts" and politicians saying Wikileaks is endangering American soldiers because they expose atrocities committed by American soldiers, and as the flawed logic goes, emboldens the enemy.

    The same people would be completely up in arms if the media/website hadn't posted information they may have had if a member of their family had been hurt or murdered. According to this flawed logic...said information needs to come out because it would help the hurt family.

    Wikileaks is actually helping the US by creating negative consequences for excesses of its military. Instead of trying to silence Wikileaks by extra-legal, Gestapo/NKVD/Kempetai-like "rendering" of the founder (which will only worsen the US image), maybe the US should rein in their cowboy soldiers and walk the "spreading freedom and democracy" talk.

    These same people who are calling for the take down of the messenger if it's something they disagree with or happens to someone else a world away. According to them...they're non-Christian...not pro-USA...then they're ready to be bombed back to the Stone Age. At that time...their god will sort them all out. They're not important...so screw all of them.

    On the other hand...there are people like me who attempt to live what they preach morally and ethically. I listen/read news outside the US and enjoy foreign language TV/radio more than the BS they call US radio. I can all ready get my 25 minutes of commercials every hour for every show you can watch on American TV. For some reason...there is more to this world than a country called the USA with only about 300 million people out of over six billion over the rest of the world.

    Yes. Most frequently you're going to be talking to a repeater, so it depends somewhat on where you are in relation to the repeater.

    Make sure you program the repeaters into the radio before you head out. These are available at many area ham radio websites. In addition...it would be worth the time/money to buy an extra battery...along with a battery adapter which uses AA batteries.

    Or require students to use a specific model of calculator, with their names printed on the back. Before each test, collect the calculators, shuffle them, and hand them out randomly. Statistically, absent wholesale class-wide collusion, your problem is solved.

    The only flaw in this is that I've met too many teachers who trust their students would never cheat on an exam. As a sub...I've given too many exams where I saw them cheat with cell phones/iPods/their classmates. When I told the teacher about it...was told it would never happen in their classroom. They were cheating and I was the bad guy for catching them doing it.

    In elementary school I wasn't allowed to count on my fingers because the teacher thought it was more important to know addition tables by rote instead of relying on other learning methods. So I learned to visualize counting on my toes. I wound up with a B.Sc. in theoretical mathematics. They sure showed me.

    Had a teacher in Oklahoma when I was in the 6th grade call me stupid in front of the whole class. Funny thing...I had gone to school in Utah the previous year and was two years ahead of the class I was put into. From that time forth till I was in my early 30's...never bothered learning anymore math than that to graduate from college with two BA's.

    As for that teacher...she never left that rural classroom & was stuck teaching elementary school until a couple of years before she died. Having gone back with both of my diploma's & my Microsoft MCSE...I asked her if she had ever made more than 25K a year...then showed her my tax returns for one of the years around that time. Too bad she was too old to realize how bad of a teacher she actually was...as well as being a stupid bigot and jerk.

    Am running it right now. Even turned on all my 3+ extensions by adding this line: extensions.checkCompatibility.4.0b (false) in the about:config.

    As one who did the whole college route about 30 years ago...it's not the government subsidies which lead to this lie from hell. It's the educational establishment which needs to keep worthless employees employed which lead to college being out of the reach of many people. For instance...look at the salary of university/college presidents & administrators. You want something which will blow your mind...look at the salary of any university/college sports coach whose team appears on TV. Any of these are multi-millionaires who actually don't do much of anything other than look good & raise as much money as the alumni can throw at the college. You want to bring the price of a college education down to earth...tell all of these overpriced idiots they'll actually make the same salary as some of the poorest students parents attending their institution.

    College was fun...but looking back on it now...I would have much better been served by fixing cars...air conditioners or becoming a plumber. It's like the old saying..."those who can't...teach & get paid MUCH more than they're worth".

    I understand the need to keep things secret, and I understand that in war shit happens...but that doesn't mean when things go awry, we the people shouldn't know about it.

    Look at what happened during the Vietnam War. Nixon went ape over the Pentagon Papers being released. Had a hell of a time saying everything we've done was on the up & up while at the same time you had the Pentagon's own advisers saying privately how badly things had gone bad.

    During jr's administration...you had the executive order that no bodies at Dover were to be shown unloading off the plane. For some reason...the administration felt by seeing the bodies...along with the numbers being quoted on the news...it would reinforce how badly they screwed up in having people die for their stupid political aims.

    Oh really!!! Allow me to list examples of when the "free market" will do. BP in the Gulf right now...Exxon in Alaska...any airline flying among many other examples. What about your drinking water...the food you eat...the car you drive...the wage you make...your apartment or house? All of these have to do with consumer protections being forced on businesses.

    All you & others refuse to mention that companies will do do the "free hand" of the market as long as it doesn't cost them anything at all. For instance...all of the people who die in coal mines or on oil rigs/refineries have & will die because it is cheaper to pay the fines & lawsuits rather than to follow safety protocols. Been this way since the Industrial Revolution & will continue to do so till a revolution happens or they are fined into oblivion for being arrogant bastards who want to be rich than do what is right. Funny thing...you can do what's right & be rich...but being a bastard seems to be more in vogue.

    Maybe employers should be up front with people about their responsibilities and pay. Doing a Bait & Switch with job responsibilities and then ignoring these actions is just a way for the company to leech the most out of you. Frankly I think it'd be important to remind your manager of your job title before you start doing stuff outside of your job description. Companies will take, take, take & give as little as they possibly can in return.

    This is the way it is right now...but what about in the future? Was reading the other day that if other jobs were available...many people (over 50%) would jump in a heartbeat. With this being the case...I understand businesses are into the here and now...rather than what will happen when their employees are able to head somewhere else. What sob story will the business pull to keep all the employees they screwed over during this time when "the rats start jumping ship"?

    Am a very firm believer in karma & the biblical Golden Rule...since these businesses will eventually reap what they've sowed. I hear very few stories about businesses doing right by their employees...but stories right and left about them not doing right.

    Yes, changing the units will most definitely help. The units we should change to are the ones we already use here above the border: liters per 100 km. Going from 20 L/100k to 15 L/100k saves just as much as going from 10 L/100k to 5 L/100k. In most people's lives, the distance you need to travel is constant, not the amount of money you have to spend on fuel, so fuel per distance is much more logical anyway.

    While I personally agree with you...changing to a more logical/easier system has been tried before & failed miserably in the US. Prime example is the metric system.

    If people are paying for the precision and technology behind the ink printing itself, that still doesn't explain why it's so expensive. How can they afford to print the label on that ketchup packet for so cheaply?

    Gave up on ink jet several years ago when the cost of laser printers came down to the cost of around $50-100 US. Being all I print out are black/white prints...could never see throwing my money away on these extortionable cartridges. For instance...with my Brother 2140 laser printer...I can get a replacement toner cartridge from $31 US which is rated at 1500 pages or for $46 US a cartridge which is rated at 2600 pages. (That is the OEM cartridges from Brother. I can get aftermarket for about $10-20 US less than these costs.) A buddy of mine gave me an HP 842C when he upgraded to a Brother MFC. Pricing the Tri-color cartridges...they start at $33 US for 450 pages. The black cartridge is $29 US for 833 pages.

    If you want to continue to line their pockets and watch as yours stay empty...you can keep up your behavior.

    Calling the War for Southern Independence a civil war is an example of historical spin.

    Pardon? It was both a civil war and a war for independence. If the south would have succeeded in seceding it would be called a war of independence today. The unionists prevailed, so because the primary feature of the war was that it was between two groups who were part of the same country both before and after the conflict, it is accurate to call it a civil war.

    This being the case...in my family history (came from South Carolina...later Mississippi/Texas)...it was referred to as the War of Northern Aggression.

    You want to see an interesting movie on what would have happened if the North had lost...see "C.S.A.: The Confederate States of America". They show it on IFC & you can rent it. Very well done movie that would be worth owning for seeing another spin on history.

    The only thing about this is the nutjobs in Texas are worse nutjobs than those in California. The nutjobs in Texas are of the same mentality as those from the Inquisition in Europe.

    Let us count the ways in which the nutjobs in Texas have changed the textbooks used in the US:
    1. The word "capitalism" is being replaced with the phrase "entrepreneurship" because capitalism has "negative" references of being greedy.
    2. Thomas Jefferson. Because Jefferson was a Deist & wanted separation of church/state...he's evil & shouldn't be mentioned because a secular society is a bad thing.
    3. America having a "Christian" (evangelical/fundamentalist) foundation at the beginning.

    My only question is this...if one of the universes don't have Now and Later's...does that mean she's invented it for that universe? What if she shares it in this said universe & they become like heroin is in this universe? Is she responsible for creating the problem there? Do we send her to stand trial (if they have something like that there) or do we force them to come into this universe? So many questions...so many universes.

    Outlaw every single DRM measure! Outlaw copy protection, region encoding, viewing restrictions (like the annoying mandatory ads on DVDs).

    I may be mistaken...but can't the commercials be taken out of DVD's just leaving the movie in place...if you decide you want to break DRM to make a backup of the video you purchased?

    Also, think of the children! They can be easily influenced by scrupulous advertisers and shouldn't be forced to sit through any commercials at all (while we're at it, let's outlaw all commercials during day time programming).

    Always thought there was a FF button on the remote which will skip any of this?

    What people are forgetting about this is...we're in the middle of the deepest recession/depression in 70 years. My roommate has all ready dropped the cable...since all the bill seems to keep doing is heading up every time a cable/satellite exec farts or needs a new boy/girlfriend. As soon as my DTV contract is up at the end of the year...that's bye-bye as well. With more & more people doing the same thing...where are all these customers going to come from for the cable companies/MPAA to keep screwing over?

    If I find I'm still having trouble paying the rent this summer from not being able to find even a part-time job...will just break the contract. With rates increasing ever upward...don't need to worry about paying their salaries or my rent. Hulu...over-the-air TV & the network websites are just as good to get whatever TV fix I'm looking for.

    If your console's cartridges don't have those idiotic tiny plastic teeth *cough*DS*cough*, use rubbing alcohol on a cotton swab instead.

    Have an even better/fun way to do this. I use "Everclear" grain alcohol to clean any parts. Once I clean the parts...I'm next with a few swallows. Of course...my liver hates me...but may as well clean me as well as my electronics.
