All these types of stories make it as if there weren't unreliable sources prior to the current digital information age. Whatever happened to teaching students about how to use sources?
1. The Microsoft tablet PC did not fail (maybe thinking of Origami or whatever?). Both XP tablet edition and Vista have excellent support for tablet PCs.
2. The convertible tablet (w/ the swivel keyboard) gives you a keyboard (gasp!). This may come as a surprise, but many people type faster than they handwrite.
3. My Lenovo X61T (a convertible tablet) is ~ 3 lbs; probably lighter than my iBook.
4. Any computer geek should already have wrists of iron (for all that one-handed typing amongst other things)
It's strange to me that people don't appreciate the fact that, were this going the other way,/. would be collectively laughing at Ballmer for throwing a hissy fit. Then again, no one actually bothering to read that open letter probably plays into it. If people actually read it, they might realize that there is nothing in there to substantiate any allegation. Hell, it doesn't even explicitly make any allegations. It just insinuates with: "something is weird about the deal! (give Ballmer evil eye)"
Also: "Why use grid power, when that same Nigerian immigrant can hand crank that server?"
Server admins typing with one hand will be even more standard than it is now.
If you're pumping a shotgun... chances are you aren't firing that shotgun.
Your point is certainly valid, but I think your specific example is a poor one. If anything, the Zapper would make for a more realistic experience in the shotgun example.
What I heard in an interview with some NASA guy is that the foam bottom of the shuttle is extremely delicate (according to him, you can poke a finger into it.) So it's not so much that the space walk is especially dangerous for the astronaut but that the risk of causing more serious damage is very real. Wouldn't want to accidentally knock off a tile...
"but you might as well buy a PS2 if you're running on old TV" That's really just not true. There's still worlds of difference between a PS3 on a SDTV and a PS2 on a SDTV. Certainly there are other things to recommend the PS2 (price and the huge games library), but this notion that this new crop of consoles isn't any better than the previous generation on SDTV is just plain false.
Help! Help! Sony is being oppressed!... blah blah blah.
With all the defending of your favorite game console's honor, how do you people find the time to actually play games?
I vaguely recall that Spore was suppose to be some kind of big change in the way games are developed. Something about focus on letting users create the content, decrease the art assets needed, etc. Doesn't it use like procedural textures and whatnot? I guess maybe it hasn't turned out to be such a revolution on the development side after all. (For some reason I was always under the impression that Spore was suppose to have more of an impact on how games are made rather than on how games are played... maybe I was just misinformed.)
Since when has science had a monopoly on the semantics of natural language? People are just irked because the notion of faith based "knowing" offends their world view. The GP is saying what he means; people just can't stand that he means it.
To be fair though... the current interface isn't great for that either. I have a 3rd gen iPod without the click-wheel and I would have trouble doing what you're talking about on that thing. While I think you're point is a valid complaint, I don't think it's something to put against touch screen iPods specifically.
FF games are more than the sum of their component parts. They're a convergence of interesting characters, intriguing story and incredible production quality.
That being said... I have a friend who really dislikes FF games even though he loved Chrono Trigger. He got me thinking about it and I realized that FFX is the only FF game I have ever finished even though I've played pretty much every single one. I think the series has somewhat staled. A cynic might say that FF games are just interactive fiction chained together by a series of random encounters. That's why I think FFXII is a great step forward even if it wasn't perfect. It finally made some changes to the core game play. I'm sure there are some fans who hate the changes but clearly you're not one of them. So, I would highly recommend that you give FFXII a try even if you hate the other FF games.
I'm not a power engineer either but I am an EE. My understanding is that there just isn't a good way to store massive amounts of power. (They use some tricks like pumping water back up to the top of a dam.) So the entire power grid is a massive control problem. They have systems that are doing calculations in real-time and generating units, sources of capacitance and inductance have to be brought online and taken off-line as needed. Hydro, nuclear and large coal burning plants supply the base-load (those take weeks to take on/off line) and they have smaller (probably less efficient) generating units to take care of peak demand. I seem to remember hearing about some utility resorting to portable diesel generators to meet air conditioner load during the summer. I assume these peak load generating units cost more while running. They can also buy electricity off the grid.. which I would assume costs more as well.
In all fairness to the Americans. Those coins were like the first (only?) coins in the world with color painted on the metal. For those who haven't seen one, they have a red poppy in the center.
I think it's reasonable for these guys to be a bit paranoid. Of course... they probably could have taken the time to Google the coins before raising any flags about nano-tech spying devices.
Considering we're talking about an MMO, I think it's quite possible that someone could use the source to create malicious exploits. It may even be possible to make that MMO completely unplayable (steal player accounts?). Either way, I think the idea is that the company will have to make significant code changes or risk losing a lot of customers. Between the extra dev/QA time and the delayed time to market, making the changes doesn't come cheap either.

It's not just the rich. The rich are certainly very very rich, but even the middle-class in China has very good buying power. There are many households in China that hire someone part time to do maid work. They don't spend a huge amount of money on housing and they don't invest as much for retirement (although both these things are changing). Costs for western name brand products (gadgets, clothing, fast food, StarBucks, etc.) is more or less the same as what you would find in the West. However, food (groceries and restaurants), domestically produced clothing, and labor are all incredibly cheap. The consequence is that they have a lot of expendable income and purchasing power.
3)Divide players by skill level based on performance metrics regardless of their control scheme
I suspect the gap b/t wasd and gamepad user amongst average players will be a lot smaller than people expect. Factors like familiarity with a particular level, and general experience playing a particular game have a big effect on player performance in FPS games.

"And like cattle, we line up to hand over our money."
What's actually happening is that people are just not buy HD discs and sticking to DVD. That's not what I would consider cattle like.

If my memory is right, it's to compensate for reactive loading on the grid, in order to maintain power quality.

The hardcore demographic wants it for the name. Revolution -> Wii was actually marketing genius
Did anyone else totally not expect the order to be: Programmer > Artists > Designers?
I was very much under the impression that game designers were kind of like project managers for games...
