"I'm waiting for some reviews of Tabula Rasa... hoping it might be worth my time."
Sadly, it isn't. If you can pull yourself away from the MMO scene for a bit, the rest of the gaming genres are flourishing with incredible titles right now.
1 - DAOC's primary competitor was Everquest. WoW came out quite awhile later.
2 - How was DAOC a failure? When you consider how it came from a near completely unknown dev with zero advertising budget, the game was a definite success.
I still can't play through this game because of this level. The first time one of those god damned residents sees you is bone chilling. The scream they make as they unnaturally chase after you is the stuff of nightmares. Too scared to play a video game. That's pretty funny and/or sad.
A shame because I absolutely love every game of the Theif series and I wanted to see the ending to #3.
World of Warcraft could be such a great game if they would simply stop depending on the grind as endgame content. In Blizzard's long history, the decision to mimic Everquest's endgame is by far the worst to me.
Well, with this announcement and the many delays, I am no longer buying this game on release day. I'll wait 4 or 5 months and if it hasn't faded to obscurity, I'll pick it up then.
"He said he uses his Windows PC for games. Granted, that's the mainstay of how many people have "fun" on their computers, but Apple doesn't market for games. They gear their image toward "having fun doing what you want to on your Mac" and hope you are not a gamer.;-)"
And with that, Captain Obvious opened up a window to fly off and torment another Slashdot poster. Unfortunately for Captain Obvious, the gift of flight was not one of his many superpowers. He plummetted out of the 10-story apartment building window to his death on the busy city streets below.
Doctor Obscuration saw the news on his television moments later and thought to himself: "Excellent... Excellent..."
A review now is needed, in case anyone want to jump in early - which is usually most MMO gamers.
You have valid points though. Really, the standard game review system should not be applied to MMOs. It's no secret these games change - a ton. MMO reviews should be done on an annual/bi-annual basis.
Age of Conan may end up being a better game than Warhammer, but there's no way it'll draw more of a population.
Existing fanbase: The Conan world had a few bad Ahnold movies set in it way back when, but the Warhammer IP has flooded gaming for years. Dawn of War, Mark of Chaos, Dark Omen, etc. And rumor has it there are a couple million tabletop Warhammer players out there... Mythic also probably has a slightly higher fanbase from DAOC than Funcom has from Anarchy Online.
Potential User Base: AoC has an M rating. WAR has a T rating. Also, AoC's system requirements are looking quite a bit more painful than WAR's. There's more people that could potentially pick up WAR than AoC.
Advertising: C'mon, it's freaking EA. AoC can't compare with that. WAR has also been getting alot of publicity already. This is like the 4th WAR story on slashdot. I've heard diddly squat about AoC, except on MMO forums.
Gamestyle: WAR looks to be making massive improvements on an already thriving MMO niche: PvP. A niche that a lot of the WoW playerbase has been complaining about for ages. AoC has some cool plans for their game, but I don't think the audience is as defined or large.
The WoW factor: No question WAR looks and plays more like WoW than AoC. It'll be much more natural for a WoW player to make the switch to WAR.
The game is being designed for huge battles. As in hundreds of people vs. hundreds of people. You can't massive battles with Crysis graphics.
Also, I think they're taking a note from WoW here. Most gamers don't have bleeding edge graphics cards. Most of us are still duking it out on 128MB or 256MB cards. Some even with 64MB. There's a much larger potential market for your game then. For example, I didn't even bother trying Vanguard because I heard it was a slideshow on even the good systems. They lost me as a customer just from the graphics alone.
I must be wrong in the head. #3 is probably my favorite of the series.
Also had no performance issues with running the game (although Doom 3 proceeded to run like crap on my system).
Couldn't agree more. I think a lot of people are dominated by nostalgia.

Have no fear, the "Day-Ock" pronunciation is/was used by many people.
Bionic Commando on the Wii. I'd crap myself in delight.
Huh?

This was extremely cool of EA. It was a labor day weekend full of nostalgia.

So I guess I'm one.
This sounds oddly familiar...
Why all the speculation? They've got a FAQ about the acquisition already up.
See sig:
How long do you predict that MMO gold selling will remain possible? Do you foresee any gaming companies putting a definitive end to these practices?

Capcom: I'm still waiting for a new Bionic Commando.

"I've been playing MMO's since 2001, and not since Dark Age of Camelot has there been a more annoying world chat channel."
Considering there was no world chat channel in DAOC, that's not really saying too much.
Cannot wait for Warhammer Online and the next set of MMOs to hit.
Some great new games in the works and Blizzard may actually start to feel some heat. Someone's gotta convince them to end the EQ1-model gear grind.

Well, it's always possible, but so far EA is acting out of character with the Mythic acquisition.
They let Mythic push the release date back, which for EA is somewhat of a miracle. They've also been letting Mythic just do their thing.
Maybe EA has learned their lesson? Pffft, nah, who am I kidding.
No need to beg. Just do what I did and put:
I ROCK. NOW GIVE ME A BETA PASS.
Politics on Slashdot. Serious business.
The standard NES controller.
Because nostalgia always defeats improved design.
Also Nintendo thumb. I mean, c'mon. How cool is that?
