Symbian, is finding that it is loosing its once strong share in the Mobile OS Market. They are moving to an Open Source Model in an attempt to "Firefox" their OS back to a good standing.
Sometimes it works. Sometimes it doesn't. However trying to go against big names like Apple, Google and RIM you need to do something.
It isn't as much as Open Source for comunity sake. Just kinda a gap so new companies who are making mobile apps wont go with android all that quickly so they can keep their market share. So I doubt I will see Drivers too... As they are not interested in mr. Normal Hacker who wants to tweak their phone. But to someone who wants to make a new phone... So they would be making their own drivers. Thus pushing market share.
That is knda why the government hires contractors. If they are caught it is those immoral contractors, if they are not they perform a valuable asset to the country... Even if they do get caught and take the PR mess they hire them again as all they did was what they were hired to do.
Privacy is like the answering "No" to a request. It will keep you out of trouble, and avoid risk. However it will avoid a lot of reward.
For example having you information public or more public will help better targeted adds to you (Yea sound bad at first but... If you are in a market for say a new computer and the computer you were looking at happen to have an add with a 15% off coupon then you are better off getting 15% off then not.
Or knowing what type of food you like. You go to an area and it will show what food places that you would eat at that are near by say on your iphone... Vs. say a search for Sushi and end up getting flatworm.
One key think you need to remember. Most people really don't care about you. Just as long as you have protection against Identity Theft most people really wont bother digging into your details and causing problems in your life.
Even so we do have more privacy with all this electronics today then we ever did. Back in the old days you go to the local store engaged in the local gossip in general you know everything that everyone did. Today the information we get about people are statical in nature and jumping to conclusions is much more difficult.
The old days. George bought a steak he must be doing rather well. Today. George Smith personID 294881992929111. 294881992929111 bought qty 3 of item 10020011, item 10020011 is called steak. 10020011 price is $4.00 per unit. 294881992929111 payment was via Credit Card number 9222-1222-3221-1233, credit card number 9222-1222-3221-1233 belongs to 294881992929111.
Almost everyone who look at the data will probably will not try to link everything together as it will create too much information for them to handle. So they will only look at things that they care about... How Many Steaks did they sell during this period of time... How Many should I buy. Who has shown a trend in buying steaks should they get a coupon. How many steaks are sold at $4.00 per unit vs. $3.59 per unit. It is more profitible to sell the cheaper or more expensive steaks...
For the most part people don't really care about you today. So yes we are spreading more information about ourselves however its aggregation makes it hard to make any real calls that could really effect your quality of life.
That is of course you take out Identity Thief which is still a problem.
So after a project dies it forks off into a slew a Legacy systems all needed independent modifications and changes. That is the Ugly side of Open Source to me. Not to sound like a fanboy here... But the iPhone even my old one. Is rather decent at gaming. I am not sure what people are expecting for a full gaming phone. Microsoft goal for winning the browser war back in the late 90's was so they could have control of the standards and make the web their own so it would be useless to use the web without windows and Internet Explorer.
Yes they won the war but they failed in their objective. Why...
1. ActiveX security issues and the rise of internet skum...
When ActiveX was competing against Java Applets they made some things that made the users at the time happy but was short sited... ActiveX while faster also allowed writing to the system and its only security measure was a warning. Thinking their user base will say no when they go to that porn site and it asked to install this app so they can watch the movie... Then this spread and went across thew the advertisers channels so even legit sites with shady advertising companies found ways to install crap on your computer without you knowing. In essence limiting ActiveX to intranet applications. And shortly after that flash took over the spot as it did cooler graphics.
2. Linux and Apache web server.
IIS had a few big security problems at the wrong time of internet development where a lot of companies went with apache and linux for its server. Now that doesn't really mean that it will directly stop microsoft plans however the Developers who worked on those system initally did their testing with Netscape, Mozilla firefox and others to make sure they got the stuff to work then they finally tested and did cleanup work in IE. So the new post 2001 developers wanted to be more platform independent.
3. Mac Popularity + Linux desktop too... IE5 was the last Mac Browser Microsoft made. Then during last decade there was a surge in the popularity in macs. They were popular enough for developers and companies to take notice. As well Linux users who added to the problems so developers learned there is a lot of pain leaving out 5% market share.
4. Firefox and Webkit browseers... At the time it was the small light and fast browser that gave IE a run for its money on speed. (Today IE is one of the slowest) Back then IE loaded and rendered so much more quickly that using others will feel painful. Then they also had better CSS standard support allowing developers a reason to get rid of IE6.
5. Mobile devices... Microsoft floundered in mobile devices there were doing Ok until the blackberry with opera and the iPhone. And now with android webkit chome based. Developers who want to get that market need to make sure other browers get use too.
6. IE6 Bugs and Security... A big set security problems targeted at IE6 really got a lot of people to switch to firefox and demand that their new browser works for the app
7. High Speed Internet... Back when IE6 was new most people were still on dialup download Netscape, Mozilla or Opera was a big task that took a long time. Today it is easy to get the browser and be up rather quickly.
8. Flash... Micromeda then Adobe made flash and they made it for Windows, Mac, Linux, Solaris... and for all the major browsers. What it did was make a lot of browers made the web look cool.
9. Integrated web browser wasn't used very well. After all that legal battles and anti-trust fines microsoft paid... No one really used the inegrated browser the was it was meant to be. They still downloaded normal apps or clicked on the e to get to the internet the integration didn't add to the experience.
10.The Vista/IE 7 Flop... I dont know what was going on with microsoft back 4 years ago. But they were not putting on their A-Game competing against the wrong competitors making lofty goals and not meeting them what ever was the problem Vista/IE 7 made people want to stay with IE6/XP for a bit longer until they can get a good version. Making IE Get even more out of date.

Or just a flaw in your web public web server or a back door that you think only you know about. Someone gets in downloads some stuff cleans or wipes out the data. Data is only valuable when you use it. If you are going to be perfectly safe were no one can steal it you probably are making it hard or impossible for the data to be used. If someone actually physically steals your data and the equiptment that it was in yes you know it is has been stolen however what is worse you don't have it yourself.

I have seen computers with an uptime in years however one long power outage knocks it off. Or a backup that failed because a Tape set went bad and we didn't find out until a week too late. Is cloud computing perfect and unbreakable... No. It is probably better then your IT infrastructure Yes, unless you have a lot of money and resources put into keeping your infrastructure going.

As we've seen so far, Cloud Computing is a failure in virtually all cases
Details I need details... That is just a wild accusation.
I have seen Cloud Computing succeeding far more then it fails. As well it has opened up the gates so people on different environments can run the same application.
People don't care if it is their desktop system. They want to run what they want and when... They really don't care if it on a server or on their computer. They want the data they are looking for, and the program to run quick enough.
Why does cloud computing limit people to a single vender or network operator? I can use Bing Maps and Gmail...
Oddly enough your data is safer in the cloud then in most peoples hands. Sure you can get the geeky with their own raid and offsite backups... However that isn't the real case. The cloud allows you to put your data in a place where it will have some real infrastructure behind it. And not just one drop away from being lost, and easily stolen.
Even for me the Cloud has saved my butt more then once, The times the Cloud has failed on me was a minor inconvenience...
Just because RMS makes a Rant about the Evil cloud. It doesn't make him right, He just likes to rant about stuff and be overall negitive about anything he didn't think of himself.
Except for the fact that Communist Theory needs everyone to agree with the Communist theory people who do not follow it are breaking the rules... Hence the violence.
The Democratic systems allows for Communist to live and setup their own communes inside our government so we don't need to go and wipe them out.
You know there are some things that Private Companies can do better then the government. Some things the government can do better. And then there are things that companies can do well with the correct regulations.
For some things the government does creates a lot of red-tape and a lot of trying to please the right person and a lot of compromises in order to get everyone happy or at least equally unhappy. Companies have a more direct approach to this, less politics and more getting the job done. So they can make a profit and complete the project under budget.
However... Private firms are focused a lot of keeping profits high and costs low, which could effect quality. For that case you will need government control or at least regulations/oversight to make sure that nothing critical is being cut or skimped on.
Then there are other tasks such as maintenance wich has a defined job this can run will with government control such as Trash,Water, Sewer etc...
So it is really the right organization for the right job. I personally hate the Politics of saying X is better then Y... It is about getting the right balance.

Not as much sell more advertising but sell advertising for more.
They are designed to take stresses in one area not others.
