Microsoft Started April 4, 1975 Apple Started April 1, 1976
Neither are new companies, they are actually rather old for tech companies.
They have been flip flopping back and forth which is more hated.
Microsoft was well liked because you could buy a computer from multiple manufacturers and have your software work on it, while Apple you were stuck with Apple Hardware.
Microsoft with dominance in windows, Began to make their products shotty and broken (Windows ME) because they had such a hold on the market. That alternative systems such as OS X seemed to be a refresher ( I am leaving Linux out of the discussion, because in terms of consumer tech, Linux stayed at a distant 3rd ) as it was a newer interface with a more solid back end. Then Apple got into the iPod which made Apple cool, so people started to want to get those cool Macs. It was still Apple Hardware being stuck with Apple software, but it was good enough to take the risk.
Now today. For the consumer market. ( Not including power users, and gamers ) The OS isn't a big deal. The Browser is the king. And the browser has been ported to most of the popular platforms, and every browser now works more or less the same way. So I can have an Apple device, a Microsoft Device, a Google Device, With different OS's and software. I could get something with some unknown OS, and some unknown browser. Just as long as it is complete and supports the standards, it will work for most of my tasks.
I personally don't see why Windows 10 Pro is so much worse then Windows 8, 7, Vista, XP, 2000, ME, NT4, 98, 95, NT, 3.1....
If you get the Home version since XP, you are going to get a really sucky version. If you get the Pro version things are usually much better.
However I never really got why Windows was ever welcomed in the enterprise. Needing expensive tools to manage an army of PC, complex profile settings to get a reasonable security defaults, with its application concentric design it creates upgrade challenges.
Now I am a Unix guy, so I never really approach problems with the Windows way, when using a windows system, I will tend to use the Unix approach to the problems.
Low Labor cost tends to go to the young where their livable wage is much cheaper ( often do not have a home or family to support) As employees stay at the company longer they will normally get raises (especially if they are ambitious and hardworking) There reaches a point where their work ability exceeds what Walmart can offer. So Walmart is paying more for an employee then their actual worth to the organization is.
So Tuition assistance will attract young people trying to get a college degree, work at Walmart for 4 or 5 years graduate and move to bigger and better things.
So they keep employees long enough for them make the company money, have them leave on their own free will once they become too expensive to keep on board.
Walmart may not be a livable wage, however it isn't too bad for a introduction job without having any skill sets.
I can take this as the monetization algorithm may be programmed with an accidental sexist bias.
I am not saying if people who put more effort shouldn't get paid more, but if it rewards people who just puts more effort vs quality, factoring in that a lot of people would like the work/life balance.
I am sick of all this Nostalgia stuff. To go back to remember the good old days, where things were better. They seemed better because you didn't need to work for a living, the pressures of life wern't that hard, and probably didn't have your hormones kick in to make your lives feel weird.
During this time an Atari or Intellivision was amazing, and so cool in the eyes of a kid. Today it would be an unreliable box, with crappy graphics, and sub-par games that you wouldn't want to play for free on your phone. But as a kid one year would seem like forever, so you would had endless fun on this device until it broke down.
"But then, that is why (good) software developers/engineers get paid well." Of course your bosses who get paid better will tell you to do it the stupid way, because they don't want to accept risk. They much rather see the customers not be able to work and have someone else to blame. Then have an overall higher update, but take blame when there is an issue.
"I write my server side code in C" Leaving you programs open to buffer overflow and memory leaks. "my CGI lib is fucking bulletproof since the functions are ancient and have been hammered on for decades" So it is relatively simple. "I write my client side code in C and use Emscripten to compile my code to ASM.js " So you code a low level language and compile it to a high level language? "Since I have a C complier targeting browsers this means I can use ANY FUCKING SOFTWARE I WANT on either the client or server since EVERYTHING is written in C. All of today's "self hosting" languages bootstrap themselves using C..." Assuming of course you have the source, and any particular library that will actually work for your platform.
I have found such developers who call themselves old school and do all this stuff, are just less likely to learn something new. C has its place, However the browser more "Natively" uses JavaScript. And either you take a long time to do development, or your set of tools that you have build over a decade is the equivalent of one of those fancy new language.
Back in the early/mid 1990's I did my stuff in C, because that was the only good option. Later in my career I have started to use higher level languages. Just because it allows me to write code quickly, and other junior developers are able to pick up and maintain the program, after I have done all the heavy legwork.
I have had a strong track record of over 20 years web development, I never had to deal with a successful hack, and some of my code has been heavily hit. However I don't claim it is bullet proof, it is as good as I can make it.
However NPM links to JavaScript files never seemed to explain what the real benefit is. I only see two advantages: 1. Security Patches can be applied seamlessly. 2. If your hosting is limited, having these relatively big JS files downloaded form an other site can save on bandwidth.
But these are small issues. But I see the costs much more then the benefits.
I like to download my Javascript Framework and have it linked to the internal web-server. Just for the sake that I don't want an extra point of failure. (Like this) Then you have a to worry about if the bigger target site got hacked and altered the Node.js file to do some nasty stuff from the file.
Other then getting updates automatic. What is the point?
Before the formalization of the Scientific Process. The discoveries of the past were used using more of philosophic ways of thinking. Where we just worked purely on correlation to create our ideas on how things work.
For example Sailors used to eat lemons to fight scurvy. This worked because Scurvy is a Vitamin C deficiency and Lemons have a high Vitamin C. Buy why didn't they use more palatable Oranges? They would had work well too. Well the correlation between Scurvy and Salty environments (such as with sea travel) was high. And how eating sour tasting food such as lemons help fight it. They figured that Too much salt cause scurvy and sour food helped fight it. And although the facts are wrong, the solution did help the problem.
The scientific process would had digged further down onto why it was the case, finding that Salt wasn't a factor but the lack of fruits and vegetables that can last a long journey. And further finding would be that Vitamin C a component in fruits and vegetables is what the body was needing. And taste isn't a direct factor.
Now for people who were never exposed to that process, making such correlation that is not accurate, isn't related to the Genus of the person. But of the environment of the person.
While Turning Lead into Gold is nearly impossible without nuclear fission, because they are both pure elements. They found that mixing carbon and iron makes steal. So they figured if they may be able to mix some common elements together you may be able to make a rare element, if you try to combine many of these elements properties together.
Please explain further. Where is the line between fabricated sexism and actual sexism? If a persons gender is equated to any particular business decision then that is sexism.
While things like minimum quotas and preferential treatment can be considered sexism as well. You need to remember that they are there to offset our cultural ingrained bias. And these things should be removed once they are considered to actually be not a problem as they are sexist as well.
This issue isn't that we have two candidates one is a 8 out of ten in skills and the other is a 6 out of ten in skills. So we hire the 5 out of ten to meet a quota. but both are actually 7 out of tens and our bias automatically will make one an 8 and the other a 6. So we need a mechanism to figure to adjust for our human bias.
Now if there are objective and measurable ways to do this then I am all for it. Otherwise we need to deal with the sub-optimal method.
But ignoring the issue or blaming the people complain about it, is not helping, only hurting.
That is more Satire with hyperbole then a Straw Man argument. Sadly enough the degree of the hyperbole is much less in today then it really should be.
Politically I would much rather see debate on how to deal with climate change and at what degrees from our leaders and the media vs them just denying it all together.
If climate change is some grand conspiracy, I really don't get the final outcome it is meant to achieve. General Air Quality pollution would be an easier sell to try to "have government take over private industry" as smog, can be seen and smelled.
However denying climate change and trying to discredit the science is a way to ignore the problem, so not to waste time and money to fix the problem.
It is called shifting your car into neutral. I am surprised that so many people who tell scarry stories about cruise control or sudden acceleration have stories like the the movie Speed 2 expect it is in a car and not a boat. Where all they need to do is put the car in neutral and apply the emergency break.
What comes first. Economic failure creates depression or depression creates economic failure?
We all get depressed once in a while. On those days our work suffers a bit. Now if you have clinical depression so you always are depressed you have a bad day at work every day. Thus not getting promoted or getting fired. Hence not making money. Having been stress from that just makes it worse. Then to exasperat the problem you try to go for help. And you have the culture telling you that you are a waste of the countries resources.
Yes we are advancing but not at the same pace. The best analogy is it is like a relay race. In America we have pulled ahead but the last few generations had slowed pace we are still ahead but others are catching up and will soon pass us. To make it worse Boomers who are afraid of getting old kept the baton and did the lap that they were suppose to give to Gen X. So now their pace has slowed. Gen X is trying to catchup to take the baton because they really couldn’t do that lap. And millennials are waiting for their turn as they see other teams prepping for a good pass off.
More to the point the Stereotype is that “Nerds live in the parents basement.” Most jobs for nerds pay well enough for them to live on their own and most do. However conditions for younger adults are much harder today then the past generations in terms of home ownership. In areas that have the better paying jobs also have outrageous housing costs. So that home your grandparents or parents got with an adjusted for inflation salary of 50k a year job now needs 80k a year to get a similar home in some cities that has inflated to closer to 120k. So many kids are staying at their parents house and help paying for their rent because their parents were able to get their home at a bargain compared to today. So the overall experience for somewone to pay a fair rent to their parents is lower.
There are other factors too. Movies prices for good movies are the same price for bad ones. There are a lot of movies I would say wait for it to get released on DVD and I’ll rent it on Redbox or when it gets to Netflix. I may want to see the movie but not at the ticket prices. So for a wait to see movie may be more appealing if you have a subscription service to watch it.
But that is what we want to see. Real life is complex they are no pure good guys and bad guys. There are just people doing things that I think they should be doing and doing things I think they shouldn't be doing and they are other people who thinks what they are doing in different ways.
A simple plot, written with likable characters paced at a good speed is often what we want after having to deal with the complexities of real life.
When life is good and little conflict going on then the more complex films are what people want to see because their lives are so easy and boring, being exposed to more mind expanding ideas and complex relationships is more appealing.
Normally you see a inverse relationship with movie complexities and the state of the culture.
Sure you can. We see it all the time. You see posts from stupid know it alls like me. Who thinks they know what they are talking about, and honestly believe it. Only to be on a different topic, or working the wrong tree.
In terms of security and privacy. Amazon was probably focusing on making sure a hacker can't get into the device to spy on people and their servers are secure so on the right people can access the data. That in itself is a major undertaking. What seems like what happened is a bug in the system that couldn't determine that this wasn't meant to be called out.
Amazon is serious, but they were ignorant on what to do about it.
I just hope that guy who claims to be from the future is just a hoax.
Because he says 2019 there will be two nuclear strikes, NC will hit Hawaii and US will hit back. Then in 2020 there would be WWIII which will last for 3 years.
Being that governments are the high user of Space Crafts, subsidizing really isn't benefiting them. Because they are paying them out of tax payer money to save on a launch out of tax payers money?
You also make it sound like government subsidies are a bad thing. One of the highest markets for subsidies is the Agriculture industry which helps to make sure American Food supply is there, and supporting farmers for bad seasons. So they will be able to operate the next season.
