  1. Re:This just in... on Hostile ta Vista, Baby · · Score: 1

That's not always the case. It's just that most people are already very learned in the way of Windows. I am the same way. I have no problem working to get it to run well, I've spent days on end trying to get my linux distro attempts set up and running how I want, but usually something goes wrong and any forum or IRC channel I get on and explain my problem to, I'm other just called a noob or ignored for a noob. For example, I was having problems where the permissions I was setting on a folder would not save. I would go into properties, change them, hit apply and close the window. Re-open it, they're back to how they were before. I tried doing it via command line, same problem. I get on an IRC channel, ask people my question, and the first response is some uber elite mega linux power user responding with a link to basic unix file permissions tutorials. I already know file permissions, I tell him. He says obviously you don't, as you can't get it to work. I respond by trying to restate my question in a format possibly easier to understand, impossible to really not get, and he responds by kicking me out with a parting message of "idiot.".

If I can't figure something out windows, however, I just google it. If it's 95% of the problems I have, someone else has already gone through this and google will return the first result as a thread of people talking about it, usually with a solution at the bottom. There is to this day only 1 problem I have been completely unable to find a solution for, everything else I can usually find another case where they already went through it and I can just mimic them. I don't have a problem with Linux, but the lack of support makes it hard for someone who's used Windows his whole life to transition easily, to the point that I just get frustrated and give up until the next time I get the urge to try again. I get the basic concept of it, I understand pretty much all the big parts of it, but I just can't get past tiny problems that arise by hundreds of distros that have minor changes between them to the point that existing instructions don't apply to my situation. I like Linux, I just can't figure it out enough to be a common user.

That's not even the case. It's a DirectX9 video game, it just relies on some code that's only implemented in Vista. I'm not exactly sure which code it was, but when I was installing the game on my XP machine I had to run an installer to install the code framework so it would run on XP.

I had it on reserve at gamestop forever, but when I found out it was Vista only I was pissed. I used to have a Vista partition just to play Halo 2, I've given up on it now though. If I patch it and play on XP I can't play network play, which was what I intended it to be played in the first place.

The main reason is that they have the whole school going on Blackboard, and most assignments are submitted online. They want a universal format, and it's just easier to tell everyone to use the same thing. Yes, OO.o saves in Word format, but it doesn't always look the same and it defaults to .odt, which I'm sure would be a pain in the ass because most people wouldn't think to change the type every time.

It's extremely versatile, and most online play is free for games. That, and the fact that mouse/keyboard accuracy owns controller accuracy any day of the week. And yes, I know, the PS3/360/Wii are all "I'm a PC too!" but they aren't. 1: Lack of activity is not the only reason one would gain weight. It also depends on their diet, which is regulated by parents. Don't try to push that off on video games. 2: My parents let me play all the games I want, as early as I could remember. They never made me stop, they never told me no or too much. I could also watch any type of movie (assuming there wasn't too much nudity in it, eg less than Species II and the like) I wanted. I feel I've developed just fine. I play games, sure, but at the same point I'm active and eat a healthy diet, as well as do well in my studies and work my ass off at 2 jobs, plus find time to help other students in my class. None of this was ever pushed by my parents, it was basically "do what you want but don't look to me for help if you end up in jail". I work at FedEx loading trucks, which in itself is 3-5 hours a day of hard physical labor, plus I work out. I'd say that it's not video games or tv or the media or whatever other thing of the day to blame it on, it's 100% the fault of the parents. Blame no-one but yourselves if you have messed up children.
