You can't effectively rank developers. First there are just too many to rank. Even in college football, where thousands of people are paid everyday to monitor it, they don't try to rank all of the ~119 Div 1 teams, just the top 25. Secondly there isn't a simple metric to rank developers. It's about as smart as saying look I did the most work on this project because I wrote the most lines of code.
This could even have a negative effect if developers get concerned about their ranking and try to game the system instead of making quality contributions to projects.
It's great to have the actual numbers but I don't find this too surprising given that linux adoption rates are also higher in Europe and Asia than here in Amurika. The whole open source and country independent software movement culturally fits better with left leaning Europe. I'd only think this trend would continue with Firefox as well as other open source alternatives in Europe.
I'm sure that was from the marketing dept, just like how you pointed out everything is now lo carb/no trans fat and my personal favorite Xtreme.
It is interesting though that somebody hasn't actually created a computer and widely marketed it as a Green PC. I'm not talked about taking a low powered machine (like this one) and just slapping a eco-friendly sticker on the side because it's a side effect of the system but actually engineering a chipset, power supply, driver, etc around being as energy efficient as possible and the marketing it based off of that fact. Yes google is working on this front with power supplies and power consumption is always important in servers, but for the common home computer user we haven't seen anything widely promoted as a green machine from any of the major manufactures. Just surprising that somebody (esp Apple) isn't all over this.
There are always going to be fanboys and haters. We've heard for weeks from the mac fanboys who have had 2-3 articles on the front page every day about how amazing the iPhone will be. And I'm sure for the next week or two we'll have a few posts about the flaws in the device. Macs get harassed for certain things just as Windows is harassed for nearly everything and even Linux is harassed for certain aspects.
I don't think there's a grass roots campaign conspiracy running against the iPhone, but I'm sure you will now be hearing from all of the haters as they've wanted for their day to rant on it, and each flaw will be blown out of proportion just as each feature was hyped before the release.
Two biases don't make a right... but hey this is slashdot.
$220 to make I'm sure is just a figure of the parts, maybe the manufacture too. But remember they had a lot of engineers working on this for a while and that wasn't cheap so each unit is really more than just $220. I'm sure they are still making a killing off of it but a product costs more than just the sum of its parts.
While tfa is biased and has its far share of fud, the argument it makes (which others have too) is a valid point. There have been at least 2 super continents, thousands of ice ages and geographic and atmospheric changes we can't even phantom. 99% of all species to walk this planet are extinct, and man has very very little to do with that. If the history of Earth was a day, humans have only been around for the last 4 seconds so this brief snapshot of the planet we consider to be the ideal state isn't the way things have always been (considering you agree w/ science and not a certain book). The planet has an always will change and we need to deal it with. I'm not saying we're aren't contributing to it and doesn't it at a much faster rate, but change is inevitable.
Does this mean we shouldn't change our habits, absolutely not. But Global Warming doesn't mean it's time to prepare for the apocalypse. Adapt or die.
I understand the EU desire for independence from the US but it isn't cheap. The US still spends $750 million per year just to keep GPS running. It would seem like a bargain to just keep using our system. But, I guess if your goal to is to create social work programs for your citizens then reimplementing every industry is a good idea.
Sounds great, but rather bold prediction of using only 10% the power of existing chips. I seem to remember the crusoe chip being hyped like this, until it was released.
Can we still have the option of DRM w/ the lower price? I'm all for getting rid of the DRM on iTunes, but not for the expense of another $.30 a song. Plus the sound quality is fine for me right now, I'm not a audiophile and I'm sure those who are weren't using iTunes in the first place. This just kinda feels like when the cable company adds new features or channels and then feels free to raise your rates since they're making 'improvements' to your service that you didn't ask for.
I thank Jobs for a step in the right direction, but it still has strings attached. Why should I have to pay a premium to own my music, errrr sorry I meant the RIAA's music.
"It appears after years of criticism, Microsoft may be ready to withdraw from the operating systems market entirely. The company is concerned that this relatively small and marginally profitable unit is hurting the company's overall image."
Another issue is that it's chewing up a ton of your site's bandwidth while checking all 50,000 of those files. You didn't ask for it but there's not much you can do except block their IP range. Although if it were that simple anyone wanting to hide content would obviously do that; and I'm sure they'll be coming from multiple addresses.
I see your point, but is legislation really the answer? Teachers/Parents still retain the option to punish kids, as they should and have been doing for years and years. We need rules against bullying (online and off), but I don't think we need to have laws against it.
From TFA: Flash memory, however, is generally cheaper and can service random reads up to 10 times faster than a typical hard disk. Windows Vista, therefore, includes a feature called ReadyBoost to take advantage of flash memory storage devices by creating an intermediate caching layer on them that logically sits between memory and disks.... When you insert a flash device like a USB key into a system....
Seems a bit odd to have to insert a usb key to enable this feature. Are any manufactures putting flash memory on the motherboard to support this feature?
it'll be interesting to see if the Entertainment Community wiki is embraced or attacked by the MPAA/RIAA. it seems like it would be a great free publicity and endorsement of shows/movies/songs. however, i'm sure once screenshots and clips start to go up the gloves will come off.
perhaps my statement was a little too slanted trying to be funny but my point is this. the mac arguement that upgrading vista is major surgury and that upgrading a mac isn't is just false.
yes you can run xp on old 8 year computer, you can put vista on an old computer as well. you can do the exact same in upgrading for a mac. but hardware wise for mac to be knocking a pc because it's so hard to upgrade hardware to take full advantage of the latest os is false. pc hardware upgrades are much easier than macs. apple can't win that arguement.
Are you bugged by the Apple commercial where John Hodgman is the PC, and he has to undergo surgery to get Vista?
With windows yeah you may have to upgrade your video card, install new drivers, make config changes, etc. But apple made upgrading so much easier. You can't, so you just throw it away and buy another! Now that's simple!
bill gates and microsoft to the common person are one in the same. anything he does will reflect on the company and likewise, no matter if it's the case or not. even the slashdot microsoft icon is a picture of bill, err i mean borg bill. so yes him giving away his money will reflect on microsoft.

then clearly you aren't familiar with all of the new xTreme energy drinks on the market
1) Release defective software to public
2) Sue everyone who uses it
3) Profit!

looks like the big pipe providers figured out step #2
1) Donate to candidate
2) Get them to adopt your position on NN
3) Profit!
I don't know, I'm going to have to vote for the cockroach as best adapter. Those bastards won't die.

Parts of this planet don't have broadband yet for economic reasons, this is more of a technical problem to solve. Apples and Oranges.
It makes sense to be looking and working towards the future, this sounds like an interesting project.
Big deal, if he just moved to Britain the job would be done for him.

...they are now allowed to release their 'iPlayer'...
i love how it's 'cool' to name everything i* now. the bbc couldn't come up w/ a better name? at least something british sounding.
