I don't know if I'd call MySQL a beginner's DB... It's just not feature complete yet. Neither is Postrgres, but it's heading in a better direction (IMHO, of course).
Really, neither of them are where it's at. Oracle and DB2 are where it's at.
I don't think there is a really good analogy... The shovel one isn't good because it doesn't address pipelining.
I've always liked to describe like an assembly line. Like the one you get when you go to Subway. It makes sense to have 3 guys there to make your sandwich, but it wouldn't make sense to have 12 guys there, where each one will only give you pickles or peppers or whatever...
If you keep learning, you'll see why these things are absolutely necessary. If the integrity of your data is a must, and you have to update multiple tables, you'll see why transactions are a must. And then you'll see why stored procedures make life so much easier.
Do a little reading about transactions. When you have to start using them, then you'll see how powerful a real DBMS is, and why MySQL stinks.
In fairness, yes it is an old monitor. A 15 incher that's about 6 years old now... But it's still working great, so I probably won't buy a new one. Even so, it's still odd that OS X can't figure it out.
Heh, I'll have to give it another chance next time I have access to a newer monitor.
My 12" PowerBook runs around 40-45 Celsius with normal, light use (once it's been going for a while), and it's comfortable on the lap... But once I start doing compiling and stuff, it goes to about 50, and it's a little toasty. Doing anything processor intensive, it maxes out at 62 Celsius, and it's uncomfortable on the lap. Read the support forum on Apple's website, you'll see lots of people talking about PowerBook heat issues.
I don't think it's because of the G4, more because tiny form factor...
I use my 12" PowerBook with both the LCD and and another monitor, so I get that nice 2 desktop arrangement. If I put it to sleep, it switches to a mirrored displays, or the external monitor just ceases to exist. So I always just shut down, and it is annoying since that means I have to boot the thing a few times per day. I'd agree with you if this wasn't an issue.
The best thing about this whole thread is that Loundry started the thread and got modded up to +5, then 5 or more of his replies to others in this thread got modded as Troll/Flamebait. Slashdot is hilarious.
It's actually a good list. I see a lot of flames, but really, how many of them bought 50 Cent's album? Despite what some posters here will say, mainstream doesn't automatically mean bad, and this is a pretty good list of the best mainstream albums. (Although Dizzee Rascal? They must looked at a lot of UK articles.)
I can only see a couple (of the ones I heard) that are really bad choices. And I'll bet that R. Kelly's only on there because the whole molesting deal.
Yup, I gotta second the recommendation of Vector Linux. It runs quite speedily on my P133/48MB RAM. And dillo is the web browser to use. The latest CVS w/ the tabs and frames patch is awesome.
There is one thing that makes this article incredibly redeeming: the artist's rendering of Mr. Soto. http://online.wsj.com/public/resources/images/Soto _Orlando-GE05203142004203138.gif

C'mon mods, that's hilarious.
Danger Mouse is white.
The funny thing is that a similar comment got a +5 funny. Oh the hilarity.

Yeah, it's on some real germophobe shit. It's your ass, it's gonna get a little dirty! Just sit down and do your thing.
Meritless? It was a lot more amusing than the robotic cliches that modded up to +5.
"DRM infringes on my freedom." +5 BORING!!!!!
Thank you for reminding why I use the +6 Troll modifier :-)
I always just jumped off the pad, used my hands to land. Despite all the cheating, I gotta say that the powerpad was quite gully.
DDR is aerobic. It does not build any muscle. In fact, it burns it.
Will there ever be another release of Camino?

But really, it's kind of cool. But I think I'd shoot myself if I had to live there.
Quickly browsing around www.courtaccess.org, I'd say you're right in about half the time.
Not only that, it tells us what the passed budget was, not what the president proposed. Better source plus proposed/pass budgets are required.

Are we going to have to upgrade our TVs as often as we upgrade computers?
