This reminds me of a legislation passed in India back in 2003 which required all private vehicles (old or new), to have their license plates painted with black text on white background. Earlier, the color scheme used to be just the opposite; i.e. white text on black background. The reason given was that black on white would be more visible during night.

That logic, as it has turned out now, is incorrect . White text on black background definitely causes lesser strain on eyes. Not sure whether this would be true in case of illuminated (computer) screens too.

It's not like that buddy. If I get something for free and that works as good (in fact better) as a paid version of the same, then I should let others know about it. The others who are paying for a product to get the equivalent (or inferior) functionality should be made aware that a better competing product exists and that too for free!
For me, at least that is what preaching Linux means. I may not have not contributed anything to it, but I still need to spread the right word about it, because I use it and I like it. As simple as that.

Interesting. As a customer, my experiences with my ISP's call center were not exactly satisfactory. The problem with most tech support people is that they think that their callers are morons. Once, my net connection was down. I called up my ISP customer support. Explained that my DSL router was not getting an IP, turning it on and off did not help. She kept asking me all the time which particular site I was trying to access and that the sites that I was trying to access might be down or slow. It was of no use to explain her that I wasn't even able to ping an outside host. She probably didn't even understand the terms 'IP' and 'ping'. In another instance, when I called up the customer care to complain about the spped of connection, she (not the same person) advised me to got to McAfee site and get a trial AV download.

It's not that I haven't had good experiences with tech support. Dell server tech support staff was for example, very trained and understood the terms SATA, RAID, SCSI very well. You might argue that they need to; otherwise why they were at that job at the first place. Unfortunately though, I don't see the same logic being applied to other tech call centers. All you need to have is, if you want a call center job is perhaps a good voice and the ability to dodge your callers.

As a college student, I always struggled with higher mathematics. Until school they taught geometry that dealt with two dimensional figures, arithmetic which involved profit and loss calculations, factorization of numbers, co-ordinate geometry that was an extension of simple geometry and all that interesting stuff. That mathematics used to be tangible as it dealt with something real.
Once in college however, when faced with differential equations, Laplace transformations, Fourier series and all other outlandish stuff, mathematics suddenly started appearing lethargic to me. The text books apart from a few solved questions followed by twenty question exercises, never bothered to explain what earthly purpose this all stuff served.

Any such division of mathematics or physics that has got a very limited application in some specialized areas of study should be left to only those who are really are interested in them. You should not try to push it down the throats of poor students who can't comprehend it.

Whatever distro they choose, I hope they mention it openly. I recently came across a Toshiba laptop ad in a newspaper which just mentioned 'Linux OS' in the end of it's features. Furthermore, the term 'Linux OS' was accompanied by a small footnote that went like this "The pre-installed Linux OS may have limited functionality unless a new operating system is installed". Needless to say, this "new operating system" would presumably be Windows. Such clumsy marketing would definitely force a non-geek PC user into thinking that Linux might be just a limited-functionality OS (perhaps with no GUI) like FreeDOS.

Seeing in that way, Dell's commitment to Linux seems far more serious then the likes of Toshiba and HP.
