  1. cruel and unusual punishment? on House Bill to Make File-Sharing an Automatic Felony · · Score: 1

I'm beginning to wonder if many of these copyright laws prohibiting unauthorized copying could be overturned by the Supreme Court on the grounds of cruel and unusual punishment. Should this law pass, and the usage of P2P software continue to grow, a significant portion of the population will be jailed. Construction and prison administration will boom as a result, but overall, the future growth and prosperity of the nation will be retarted because all the brilliant minds are rotting in cells.

My boss checked his e-mail sent over the weekend and discovered that over 2/3 of it was caught by the ISP's spam filter. A very large percentage of what wasn't captured was also spam, so there was time wasted in disposing of that. I believe that spam will eventually be outlawed, but the service providers need to do more on their end to prevent the spread of spam by restricting access to SMTP servers and ports. The idea of scanning attachments is good, but you also run the risk of deleting something that is legitimate. The same is true with junking spam (remember those with Yahoo addresses having their donotcall.gov e-mails trashed by the Yahoo mail server?). It may sound like a hard task, but give it some time, and the technology and algorithms needed for maximum effect and efficiency will be available.

  6. Too complicated for your average human on Making Change · · Score: 1

Granted that this researcher knows that his theory will save time in the future, but I see this as complicating the problem even more. Even I have a hard time working with numbers. Your average human being living in any nation that has a currency system will not be able to comprehend using "odd change" when giving change to another person. Our brains have been trained to think of coins as "units of a whole" (dollar, pound sterling, etc...) The reason why you see 1-cent, 5-cent, 10-cent, 25-cent, and half-dollars in the US is because a certain number of any one of these coins will be equal to one dollar. And when someone gives change, it's much easier to give 23 cents as a dime and 3 pennies instead of 1 18-cent piece and a nickel.

I agree. If they start deleting files, we could respond with finding ways to track the IP or MAC address of the host which originally sent the request and launch our own program which would remotely delete the system files required by the computer to remotely delete our files.

Another idea if you have a high-end firewall would be to find out where the hosts launching the attacks are located, and place deny entries into the ACL on the firewall, blocking access to all ports from that host or network. Let's hope they do not resort to address spoofing or using multiple network addresses.

If you have physical access to the router (especially Cisco routers), you could hose the config by just knowing how to modify the boot register. You don't need to know a password. In fact, password recovery is one of the first things you learn if you take a Cisco CCNA training course.

To secure a router for remote access, I would set up an ACL which would permit Telnet traffic destined to the router from certain IP addresses only, and deny telnet traffic from everywhere else.

The frat only needs to worry about keeping the unit stocked and devising a system to set up the member accounts (like your annual dues includes $20 to spend).

I make some extra money on the side selling gift albums to various businesses. One customer I have is the administrator of a nursing home, and she bought $10,000 of gift albums from me to give to her 200+employees (many of them nurses). The order itself was a nice Christmas gift, because the commission paid for my airline ticket to go visit my girlfriend for the New Year, and left plenty to spend on her.

I found a block list that I pasted into my hosts file (running Win2000 SP 2). Even with general browsing, I still get an occasional popup, which I then immediately track the source of and add them to my hosts file. The annoying part is that whenever I make a change, I'm forced to reboot my computer because the change slows down my entire system. After rebooting, I can surf just fine (until I see another popup). Even the reboot is a pain because after I log onto the domain, a ton of stuff runs on login, and I believe my hosts file is then processed. I certainly hope that I'm next in line for a new computer.

  14. Re:Well... no. on Helping Your Ex-Employer? · · Score: 2
Today, I spoke with a regional sales representative for Cisco. He came to the Cisco certification class that I was taking at a local university. He had a presentation on careers in the IT industry that I took two pages of notes on. The key thing that he stressed when finding work was that employers look for three things when evaluating a candidate for a job
    • Past experience
    • College degree in any area of IT
    • Vendor certification

After his presentation, I spoke personally with the Cisco representative, and he mentioned that one way you can build up experience would be to volunteer your time to a non-profit agency doing anything computer-related. After hearing that, I mentioned that I'm currently working on a website for a local chapter of Habitat for Humanity.

Don't lose total hope of finding work. I also learned that from the way things are going (particularly for those out there with Cisco certs and no jobs), the economy is starting to ease out of its slump, and companies will be hiring again.

I thought 9/11/01 was going to be a typical day for me at the time. I was a recent college graduate with a CS degree and no job. Employers were turning me down because the jobs I was applying for require either experience or additional knowledge beyond a college degree (i.e. certification).

I started out the morning, leaving my house right around the time the first plane hit the WTC. When I arrived at one company that I was going to interview with that day, I learned from the receptionist that the WTC was hit. I didn't believe her at first. After wrapping up the interview (I didn't get the job because they were looking for a VBasic programmer, and I had little knowledge of VB), I asked for directions to the nearest public library. I then drove over there, tried to get into every major news site, and could only get into Slasdot. After viewing the headlines on /., I learned that the receptionist wasn't making up stuff about the WTC and Pentagon. It was right around this time that Cleveland mayor Michael White announced a press conference, announcing what the City of Cleveland would be doing to keep its citizens safe (some of you may recall that United Flight 93 was in Cleveland airspace and turned around in the Cleveland area before crashing in PA). I knew that I wouldn't be able to continue my job search until this whole mess straightens itself out. While driving home, I had to make a couple more stops. One of which was to the Mentor Chamber of Commerce office. After leaving the Chamber office, I walked past another office where the receptionist had a TV going with a broadcast of CNN. I decided to stop in and watched the disaster for about 30 minutes before departing for home. Only thing I could think of was that with airplanes grounded, they better be airborne very soon, because I had a business trip to go on later in the month.

In the back of my mind, I was wondering if the FAA would take George Carlin a little more seriously. On one of his comedy specials, Carlin did a routine on airport security, and he specifically mentioned passengers being allowed to take knives on board a plane. Anyone hear if the FAA also banned glass bottles and knitting needles as well?
