Unofrtunatly I can't show my displeasure quite as easily. I don't want to buy the game with that kind of DRM on it, no way no how no never. No game will ever be so good that I will put that kind of crap on my own computer. It's kind of ironic because I've decided to not pirate any games any more. And I buy games online these days (appstore, steam), and I loved GTA 3 so I want to play GTA 4. So now they have made me seriously contemplating getting through other channels. Idiots :( I might get the game at a discount on a console in the future (don't own any current generation ones), but I hardly think they make much on those.

It most certainly is *not* stopping piracy. Let me give everyone a hint:

    http://www.thepiratebay.org/

See, no DRM is stopping anything. The reason people buy more of certain games than others is that they are either better, or have more commercials. So, by putting all the efforts into either making actually good games, or marketing it like crazy, they could increase their profit. Adding DRM will cost, piss of people who do buy it, and doesn't stop people from copying their game.

Fuck it, knowing what DRM that's in GTA IV there is no chance in hell that's going on my PC. It is far less of a risk installing the pirated version (in terms of computer security). Unfortunately I can't legally buy the game, throw it in a drawer, and then download the game online and install it without any digital rights-taking malware.

Valve, grow a pair, and end this crap right here and now. I *buy* games over steam. It is actually *easier* and *faster* than the pirated scene. The fact that it costs me some money is so way below the fact that it is a WAY better experience. Valve, I am willing to pay you guys more money, but only, only if you do one thing. Fucking remove the DRM from everything you publish. Don't go snow blind with the lure of cash, because it will wane sooner or later. Grow a pair, and show us the fiber of your fabric!

Either start working for a company that do care about software quality, or start your own. I know it is a pretty drastic thing to say, and one I haven't (yet) followed myself, but I do believe that it is the only way.

My hopes would be that the more good engineers that start software companies that care about how things are done (and thus the end result) the less new companies needs to be started because the old ones suck. There are reasons why one sticks around a crappy company that treats you badly in one way or another (which I think is the case in this case), and the best hope for the people who can't leave that easily to form their own company is others doing so and they following when things have stabilized.

Keep in good contact with each and every good engineer you get to know :)

Same goes for anyone else in any other country where a crap company outsources your job or your mates jobs from a company you helped build. Start up your own company, it's the best way to 1. get back 2. do things your way.

That being said I am hoping that Android will do well, it has potential as a platform and the chance to improve the ratio between shitty devices and good ones. I think that it can complement the iPhone well in the market and shake companies such as RIM, Nokia, etc.

Java/MIDP is far from "one" platform as well. Just the hassle of figuring out what freakin' device an app might work on, and if there is a special version for it, is hell on earth.

Can't stress it enough, the iPhone/iPod Touch platform is golden for developers. Good tools, heterogeneous platform, strong hardware, lots of screen, quite a lot of devices, a huge interest in adding applications, actual performance (most mobile devices have horrid performance, java and native).

I call manager on the whole T-Mobile thing. It really sounds like "they have it, now I wanna have it too" cries from a bunch of babies. I hardly think they know what the heck they are talking about, nor what it takes to bring that to market.

Android could really help here, if they would set the basic specs in a smart way. If they did, they could create a market for apps. An actual market. Not the equivalent of downloading music from Yahoo vs iTunes music store...
