Machines and computers are ideally suited to many of the tasks that make up medical care. Autonomous systems are already omnipresent throughout medicine and its only a matter of time before we trust them ahead of error-prone humans, especially for tasks that require fast reaction, repetition, or precision.

Future generations may gasp at the thought that at one point in our history we went under the knife to mortal hands.

Manhattan Project scientists may have foretold the arms race, but could they have foreseen that the advent of nuclear weapons would produce the longest period of peace between industrialized nations in the past several centuries? Considering the countless lives lost in the wars of the 19th and 20th centuries, how many lives have been saved under the haunting specter of nuclear annihilation?

In this context the analogy to climate science is less clear.

The internet is a public utility like phone, water, and electricity. Its inception was funded by federal research. Its original design and purpose was to facilitate communication between universities and later between the public at large.

The internet was not created by private venture. Businesses have no inherent right to make money off it or to steal bandwidth that other people paid for to push unrequested ads around.

Inform your elected officials. Make it clear that we will not tolerate these for-profit commercial groups invading our privacy and abusing public resources. Apply citizen utility rights to internet access.
