Actually you would be surprised how many people use it who are not engineers or scientists. What happens is that they are not vocal about it like a scientist or and engineer would be.In fact is was supprised when I heard my prof. say that she uses linux and likes the idea of free software. She is an Attorney of all things.

Free software is out there, but the only people who are gonna go spouting, "linux rocks" are those involved in the culture.

Actually this is being done. When I visited IBM's research lab about two years ago they had something very similar to this built into a refrigerator. Each item had an RF tag attached to it and the refrigerator recorded when something was taken out and put back in. I'm not sure how they could tell how much milk was available. The whole inventory thing was controled via a touch panel on the front of the refrigerator.

The lab had the full house setup with different proof of concept devices. The entire deal, lights, door, alarms, and about everything you could think of was controled from the tv in the living room. One very impressive feature was how one could send mp3s from the house wirelessly to the car so they could be played later. That kind of house is for me!

When I look at the Linux Desktop (KDE or Gnome). I see the same thing I see in every operating system. A bar, a "start button", and icons. Other that that the average non-computer savy person should not be able to tell that big of a difference. To say that they "could not get use to it" is basically stuborness on their part. They probably missed their windows gamming. As soon as the switch started the secritarys probably thought. "Wow, I can say I don't understand and thus not have to do any work!"

The predominatly humanoid aliens first came about because TOS had such a low budget. It was a lot cheaper to have a guy show up in every episode with some points on his ears than it was to paint him blue and stick an arm on his back. I also believe that a Trek with not-so-humanoid characters would not have been as good. Because, you can relate to something that looks like you. In addition, TNG explained why almost all the aliens in the series were humanoid. Four billion years ago a race explored the galaxy and found that no other races were like them. So, the put thier genetic makeup into as many world premordial soup as they possibly could. Bang, bing, and out came humaniod races arould a few billion years.
