Blizzard has proven (unknowingly) that the distribution of content via Bit Torrent is a Bad Idea.
How so? Updates on WoW are several magnitudes faster than comparable updates that were distributed on Everquest. I think they've proven the point that Bittorrent is an excellent choice when there is a sizeable installed base.
If you're referring to something other than WoW updates, feel free to elaborate on your vague statement.
I know people who are shelling out $100 out of desperation just for a virus scanner and cheesy anti-spy ware software that they hope will fix the problem only to fall victim again. If Apple developed an easy way to install OS X over Windows while saving documents, pictures, etc. they would have a real winner on their hands.
... and once the Mac community hit critical mass, the viruses and adware would come, then they could continue to pay for virus checkers and adware removers. It's happening with PDAs, cellphones, and Linux, it'll happen when/if enough people switch to MacOS. These knuckledraggers won't stop just because it's MacOS, and they've got an inordinate amount of time to research obscure security holes. All they need is a target "audience" that's big enough. Now I'm not saying that MS doesn't make things easier for them because of their dedication to "innovative" features and their slow reaction to known flaws, but that doesn't mean that MacOS X is impervious.
So does EQ. In the early day so of the game, Verant did a wipe of inactive characters and accounts and had the community up in arms because all of their Mules were gone...
Announcing WWW.GUNMODS.COM, your source for the best HANDGUN MODCHIPS and PENIS ENLARGEMENT PILLS!!! (oddly enough, we get a lot of orders for both at the same time, go figure)
... and he never tested his reception in the booth without the paint, making his 'tests' completely meaningless... Saw the show and called it a triumph for pseudo-science.
Yeah, he must've been living in a Rich neighborhood. My friends had Commodores (64's and Vic-20's), TI-99's, I had an Atari 600XL (and later a 520stfm), other friend had TRS-80 Color Computers... The 80's were a heyday for diversity in home computer architecture. It wasn't until the 90's that this Mac vs. PC BS all began.
This assertion that PalmOne hastily applied a flash-based storage heap to these devices is patently wrong. What they did was to create an internal VFS store. A FAT based VFS has always had the issue of 512b blocks.
If you'd like evidence, feel free to copy any application from your PalmOS devices internal store and copy it to your SD card. You'll see just about the same increase in storage device usage that you see when loading the app onto a T5 or Treo 650.
The absurd comment about some applications taking 500% of the storage space on the Treo 650, in the original "news article" is an outright lie. I've found the source of this lie by digging through the forums and finding one fellow who claimed that his address book which was 2.4M on his Treo 600 had suddenly sprung up to 15.5M on the Treo 650. His claim was that instead of taking 25-30b per record, the Treo 650 was now taking 512b per record. This is a lie. The addresses book included on PalmOne devices does NOT create an individual DB for each entry. If this numbskull on the forums had actually transferred his addresses the way he claimed he had, his addressbook PDB would have been, at most, only 511b larger than it was on the Treo 600.
It amazes me how a "third-party Palm developer" like this AC above me has so little knowledge of the workings of the device for which he claims expert knowledge.
I'm rather amused at the fact that the links on this "news article" all point to forums where a few curmudgeons are encouraging people to cancel their orders, because of a perceived gross error on PalmOne's new phone. All of the claims seem fairly petty on said forums. The only claim that is made that might lead one to believe the problem is a big one, (the statement that some apps can be "500% larger on the Treo 650") is completely unattributed, and I could find no evidence stated on any of the links to support this claim.
I went to the link were the poster claimed people were "cancelling their orders in droves" and counted 4 unique users that claimed to have cancelled their order. Apparently the number of people in a drove has recently been downgraded by the Department of Weights and Measures...
I don't believe it... a voice of reason on Slashdot! Someone who isn't crediting George W. Bush's victory with either voting fraud, hoodwinking, or the stupidity of more than half of the voters. Kudos, troll:)
Apple should have made the Newton either a tablet or a Palm-sized device. I have a Newton 130 and it's just large enough that it's annoying to bring anywhere and just small enough that I have a tough time doing a lot of work with it.
Forget about battery life. Battery life is nil. I used to go through AA's like water. I'd buy a Costco pack every month. It was like a dream when I got my first Palm Pilot.
The Universal Connector has both USB and a serial port, and a whole bunch of little pins....And a lousy connection. The Palm UC was hardly the end all be all of connectors. It was a crappy interface, because it failed on the one primary function that connectors MUST succeed: connection.
Trying to use a cable attached to the UC was/is an annoying task. The damn thing jsut doesn't stay connected. I say good bye and good riddance.
It also says that you cannot ask for any information or make people "sign" anything in order to get the code.
No, actually it doesn't say anything about not requiring someone to pay for the software. It says absolutely nothing about not requiring someone to "sign" anything. I suggest you READ THE F***ING LICENSE BEFORE you go off on a righteous hoot next time.
Well, children, the GPL says you have to release source code to your USERS when you distribute binary code. That's how this isn't a violation of any licenses.
If you don't hear about Citrix anymore, then you don't deal with enterprise level software deployments. Citrix is HUGE in the big leagues. You'll find it everywhere in Hospital systems, and anywhere security is a high priority. It's used primarily for its VPN-like features.
You can still shoot your giant rockets. You can't store giant rocket engines or fuel in residential areas. You have to undergo a comprehensive background check, and the rockets have to be registered, not unlike other restricted weapons (ie silencers, automatic weapons). Make no mistake, a rocket is a weapon whether that's what it's used for or not. No amount of hyperbole can change that simple fact.
As is the usual case, this would all be a moot argument if the whole world would set aside what it thinks it knows and let ME make all the important decisions.
My declaration to remove all the current problems with so-called "interference" (listen up HAMs, you guys complain the most about "interference", at least on Slashdot): Software defined digital radio
Seriously though, one of the issues that has been brought up with a software radio is that "interference" isn't what it's portrayed to be. Radio waves don't collide with one another, the way that "intereference" implies. Interference is actually an artifact of the low quality analog recievers we use to listen to radio. Their selectivity leaves a whole heckuva lot to be desired. A radio with greater selectivity (the ability to distinguish two radio boadcasts with similar carrier frequencies, even those coming form the same source) can eliminate this dated notion of interference.
and still claim that it's F/OSS?
You can claim whatever you like. Whether it is or not isn't for you to decide.

Am I a fool for giving up steady work and good pay?"
No, you're a fool for writing to Slashdot to seek validation for your actions.

EQ *invented* click spam games,
Not hardly. Compared to UO, EQ is a breeze. It's no were near Diablo/Diablo 2, or Dungeon Siege.

The sad fact is the only reason I know what you're talking about is because I watched the anime Initial D...
Yes, I am a nerd.
Those dummy credit cards you get in the mail work well as prying tools. They don't disfigure the plastic cases like a metal tool does.
Hey Berkeley - here's your petard, go hang yourself with it.
FYI a petard is a bomb. To hoist oneself with one's own petard is to blow yourself up.
Fun Fact: the word petard finds it's origin in the Latin word for fart, peditum.

but there was no easy way to back up the Memo pad,
How about Backup Buddy VFS? It comes free with the T3 and makes backing up and restoring as easy as hot-syncing (the preferred choice, of course).

I don't see any mention of her being his girlfriend. The candid photo slyly inserted into the mix implies that this is so, but never says it...
Nice of him to mention her name in the text as well. The picture by itself might have been too subtle.

Read This Salon article on the subject and be converted to the new way of thinking about "interference". Or not
P.S. This article was the subject of a previous Slashdot article.
