At first i thought that this article was about the working poor in Seattle. It rings true here with Amazon and other tech companies. I recently moved out of a homeless shelter and i knew at least 5 people who worked for the 'Zon and still couldn't afford a room to rent situation. It is kinda the reason i got out of tech and into food.
So in effect M$ Went from underwhelming users by hiding fuctions in a menu to overwhelming them but putting everything on the in your face interface and named it Ribbon....
In any case the comparison to Soviet Russia immediately falls on its face. I own my house, I own my business, I own my car and dozens of other things. It is annoying when people try and make comparisons between things when very superficially they are similar but they aren't even remotely close in scale or severity.
He said "when I grew up.." Russia was a completely different country back then. He is referring to the cold war era.
but isn't that at least in part what is supposed to be so great about Linux and related bits?
not everything that is Linux is open source and free. Linux it self yes maybe i should add the word "hardly"
I agree with Woz. Nobody owns anything. Everything digitally is licensed. Even when you hold a physical copy in your hands it's on loan for 60$. You ever actually read a EULA? With the NSA spying on you on everything not only don't you own anything nothing is private anymore.. welcome to the new America! Welcome to the New World... I hope you enjoy your stay and by the way ignore that 4th amendment only the 2nd one kinda counts....
I always been a fan of many oses including windows. it just seems microsoft hasn't given me enough...fast enough and what they give me gets in my way. I love linux/unix/gnu/bsd/ect for a good many year since i was handed a copy of slackware 2.something and told this is the future of computing (in truth it was at the time) but it still a little geek for most of computing kind. Apple (current desktop) used to be called the "awful macintrash" but now that it has incorporated my love of *xin/bsd/ect's and a interface that honestly hasn't changed majorly over it's life. Intel based machines, power and sophistication, flexibility, open source-i-ness, has kept me from the windows side of computing for a while. I don't even like troubleshooting a windows machine anymore. If Microsoft would start from scratch and rebuild windows on a more secure level and ideals i would give it a shot. I would love to feel at home again in a Microsoft enviroment but they seem to make it impossible to find stuff, and keep a status flow. For me the removal of the start button was a prime example of what i don't like about windows and microsoft's enviroment changes... as long as i can remember the apple in the left hand corner has been a fixture in mac os since mac os.
I had this conversation with my mom. I granted her the first 6chapters of genesis were true then when to Cain killing Abel. Why did god mark him (whosoever may come across) and he walked east of Eden found a land called Nod and married someone and had kids. Where did all these people come from all of sudden? What was Caine wife's name? If its call Nod that means it has established borders to Eden. Who name it thusly?
maybe if it's small add viewing nights or themes. providing a lounge is a good idea. adding books and well basically local B&N yourself but make it worth the time of the customer to enjoy your place. There is a place in orlando called stardust that kinda has a feel on this situation
A few years back I was the sole tech for a hair salon and the major problem with pos was tipping. Usi g quickbooks pos at the time was woefull inept at handling tips. We had to devise a work around for 2 years the. Was forced to purchase another 3 copies of the new version that handled tips. I had found an open source pos at the time (bananaPos I believe) that allowed tips had record keeping we needed but didn't work with our financial service providers tech. It's can be painful on both ends.
didn't the IFPI just commit piracy? If you take from the pirate what he has plundered and not return it to it's rightful owner and 'repurpose' the bounty aren't you just as guilty?
Ive worked in a NOC where we had 1 girl for the longest. She was considered "one of the guys." i'm openly gay and was treated as "one of the guys" the environment has a built in level of tolerance due to age group. If something hit too close a simple "hey too far" handle the situation. We all respected each others boundaries but also there was plenty of sexual banter of all types.
Later when we got another female, due to respect to age and presentation, we toned it down but even after a while she was "one of the guys" sometimes the worse one (in a funny way). Everybody need to respect boundaries. And to also speak up to the group first before charging down to HR. I feel when "group speak-up" is leveraged it leads to a better team. Just my observation...
i work for a big Multitech company and one of the guys purchased an alienware pc. He then sold it to another tech. The other tech is a Linux guy so he tried to install several versions of it. All versions dropped his dual core to a measily 800Mhz. when he went to the site to find out what was going on, they said there was a bios update for the machine. He tried to sign up the machine to get the update. The website said something like that serial is already registered. he was stuck. he ended up finding the manufactor of the board and downloading their flash. voila golden. but because the guy before him registered the pc not even phone support would help him. When he went to sell the alienware laptop i stayed away from buying it like swine flu. I purchased a used mac instead. He's still stuck with the hardware because nobody can "reregister" the hardware. Big booo for alienware.
if i wanna play games i have machines that i can put software in and they designed to offer me optimal gaming experience and 36" tv to play them on.. for some reason games aren't fun on a 17inch screen at a desk i usually use my computer as a tool more than an entertaiment center. i've only got in the hardware race to 1005 more real looking than reality back in the in the voodoo days. Now my computer is use to produce more than just high scores
Apple is any better? It's not like MS sues people for running windows on non-standard hardware. It's not like MS refuses to 'license' applications for windows mobile. It's not like MS requires you to become a paid developer to write applications for their mobile OS either.
msdirection: bill gates has never created a physical device that impacted the machine race
I'm no MS fanboy, but i'm no huge apple fan either. Both do their share of questionable things but I'd have to say that MS is actually the more open of the two.
msdirection: Apple's Software (because software is really all microsoft really is) is more open than Microsoft. can you get me a copy of the source code of microsoft's base kernel?
And really, one look at the prices and specs of the new mini's should tell you that apple's grossly overpriced. I can buy a better specced *laptop* for less than the cost of a mini.
mac mini is a low cost option for the Apple Platform (some say soap box). It's the parfume counter sample. It's the gateway drug. It's hardware is nowhere near as flattering as even some of the Macbook Pro's out there. but it's a shining beacon example of what's it's like to buy an apple and why the $500 is worth it.?
I've always admired the apple system of computing. As a budding technician I remember how seeing a Compaq Presario Performa just really cheapened the brand and the quality that Apple had pain stakenly held in place. I used to call Macs " The Aweful MacInTrash" because i felt very limited and restricted using and repairing the machine. Any of my friends who had a Mac Clone back in those days were my real money makers. By Pulling a Nintendo with 3rd parties and their own developers and holding up their standards was definately proof in the puddin'. (aren't standards worth anything now adays)
It seems the Msdirection is really in what the companies actually provide to the user. Apple provide a guarenteed device (any mac certified device will work regardless of other devices) something microsoft can't provide with their major products.
I used to joke to my tag bbs buddies (life before the intenet kids) I'd by a mac the day the give me a command line. Lo and behold Jobs comes back to apple after creating one of the most technological and one of the most influential systms that had a direct effect on what we we know as the web. (Who's NeXT). Voila in a blink of an eye Apple pulled a "Obama" (ok ok yes Obama pulled an "Apple") designed differently. With only a temporary hold Apple redesigned everything they were. He adapted what he created on his own to the most palatable flavor the *NIX world than any other (and my pc's run Mandriva 2009 W KDE 3.5). There many other things that when i do buy my first "brand new" Macs i will be technically hard that week!
incidently, i've have yet to actually buy a brand new in the box Apple System. But i do own several Macs and still wish i had my Magnesium 1'x1' Cube under my desk.
now i might sound like a Mac-Fanatic but i'm really not i'm just a user of technology that can truly appreciate true innovations and the ability to start all over and bring your fan base with you. Apple done exactly that.
last election i was able to watch stuff on the DNC on my linux box no problem. What's the difference now. Isn't the DNC trying to get us all in this. not just leaving out a "fringe 1%"
I guess none of you have tried Mandriva 2008. I've recently installed it on several machines and for many different levels of users. They all find it functional and 10x cooler than vista (compiz enabled on all of them including the ati's) As far as wireless, Mandriva will handle installing the ndiswrapper or the open source driver, no muck! it's automatic everything is grouped together. It's so impressive that i'm writing an article now based on my case studies on using Mandriva 2008
(mind you i've been an SuSE fan for years!)
When you need a codec the system comes up with a selection of codecs some pay some free. Any choice will work. I've been using Linux for a long time, and it's very ready for the desktop. Apple proved that.
it's cool to see such a small device able to pack so much punch. It seriously behooves me to understand why other companies can't get this right. I give credit to Nintendo not just because of their longevity but their total ability to think outside the box and give the public something worth oggling
The error can be found in the operating system please remove all traces of the virus called Microsoft anything. Install linux, Freebsd and then rtfm! You will see your intrusions drop to 0%
I don't mind seeing a well placed ad that grabs my attention whether it be on tv , radio or the net. What i don't like is when ads decide that they want to take over my browser, try to make me go into seizures or just look plain gaudy.
If your going to force me to accept IE on my Linux machines you don't have another thing coming (me to your site!)
In the case of the sony PS3 wouldn't it be sony that would be out since the price drop was across the board with the PS3? I've worked at Best Buy and we would get information before a major sale and usually would have the flier posted in the break room a few days in advanced. I know most places price match competitors and their own in 30 days. so even if circuit city had an item for less the day of the sale i can't see where this would a determent to Circuit city since you can have best buy match the lowest price in 30 days
I want to be able to view video (I use videolan so it that will be a no brainer).
I want a p2p application that works well (I use azureus- so no brainer tho I hear there is better).
I want an easy to use graphics editor (Gimp isn't cutting it).
I want an easy to use video editor (???)
I want an easy to use office suite (Openoffice has come a long way-- not quite there yet but 99.9%-- i think as of release 2.4 it will be where i require it)
I want an easy to use sound editor (Audacity is super-- and on linux too so good there)
I want usb drives and a color laser printer that works. it seems like you've already migrated from microsoft for the most part. as far as video editor get main actor. and i have yet to have a usb drive or color laser not work when i connected to my box. Don't forget for all those programs you "paid" for you can use wine (or cedega) to run them in linux.
Why do they always take the same craptastic idea and make it a video game. I'm as interested in playing lost the videogame as much as i'm wanting to play Martha Steward: The Jail Years. You know the game where you have to make creative shanks with just common housecell items,oh and don't forget the Jailsheet doily.

Is it called Edison?
So in effect M$ Went from underwhelming users by hiding fuctions in a menu to overwhelming them but putting everything on the in your face interface and named it Ribbon....
that when hp , dell and other manufactures get with playonlinux or wine and use the bridge already built
even os x sometimes requires to drop to terminal

well OSX can at least see a windows formatted drive natively. Microsoft ignores all other file systems that aren't there
