Isn't this why companies will pay so much money for IT that know what their doing. If your paying for the best of the best, support should not be a high priority. If you have to use lower quality products just for support, then someone in the chain of command shouldn't have a job.
3 years ago I had over 1200 megs of emails, spam, and attachments through my email provider sitting on their server. They never cared, they told me that as long as they have the free space, and that I dont go over 2000 megs, I would be fine. This wasnt a small provider too, it was a company owned by dsl.com.
Is the big difference here the fact that its offered as a 1000 megs of space? Im sure many providers dont monitor disk usage for email if you go through small isp's, Ive never had a problem with them.
Did they consider in the people who will never buy music that is put out by the RIAA, or the people who are not willing to pay high prices for the CD's?
It's not so much as people want things for free, or that people try before they buy, people are just fed up with what they have been put through the last few years, and have found other sources for their entertainment.
Simple, anything you can do with a WAN that dosen't deal with connting to the internet. Transfering files, connecting computers together. I dont forsee any use to the public with this, but I dont really see the difference between this, and having a preconfigured wireless router in your backpack.
I think the point that Microsoft is trying to make with office is that it's not just a word processor (like Notepad or MS Word).
Its an office, as the name stats, it has your contacts, your email client, a filing cabinet, abilities to track your information, memos Marcos way too much crap then most people will need.
Office is good in an office environment, where the tools available are put to use; small companies don't necessarily need all of these, in which case OO would be great.
What format will Ineed to use to transfer existing books to us it with. Can I transfer existing books over to this format, or even at all to this device.
Will the downloads avaliable have time restraints on it, can I read them as much and as often?
What publishers will be supporting these companies.
Basiclly this sounds like a good device, the E Ink is a great idea, but I will want to transfer all my personal documents, along with the 3 gigs of ebooks I all ready have, along with being able to download new books from the web.
They dont really say much about this side, only that it looks pretty and how much it can hold (500 txt or xml files is not that much, 500 pdf files can be alot)
Because people will want a media player, and when Joe six pack goes out to buy a new version of windows, and has to choose between windowXP and WindowsXP with Media Player, what one will he choose?
If they dont know the difference then its hard to tell, but if they know what media player is, they will buy the one with Media Player, bucause they will want something simple and free to play media.
If this happened in the U.S. and I had to buy a media player (sure some are free, but the ones I would use cost money) I would be vary unhappy.
Even in windowsXP you can choose to install it or not install it, then if you install media play you can allways uninstall it.
I just bought a new dell, and it had media player, real player and a few other media players that I removed within 5 minutes of my machine starting. Why? Because I don't need a media player for my work machine, but people do have options.
I don't own a Mac, so I don't know this for sure. But doesn't OSX come with QuickTime? Isn't this the same thing as what Microsoft does with media player? What about the next release of OSX when it has Itunes preinstalled, won't that be an unfair advantage against companies that might be in competition with Itunes?
Yeah Microsoft is a monopoly, but still, that doesn't make it right that their competitors can do something and they can't.
I don't see how having your personal information stored on hundreds and even thousands of non-central repositories would be any better......
I would feel much better with all my personal information being stored on MY machine, and having specific sites that I allow to access this information, then having my personal information stored everywhere on the net in databases, or to have passport like systems working together with site.
They wont let you have your phone to receive phone calls at work?
Fine, then let them know you wont receive work phone calls when your not at work.
I dont understand why they would do this, unless they want to monitor every phone conversation you will have through the day, because you can simply use work phones to send/receive personal calls.
Everyone who has my cellphone knows that I work, they know not to call unless its important before 4pm, and if Im still at work after 4pm, then I think that if I am putting in the extra hours I can talk all I want.
Its simple, you dont want to support the site making money while offering you content, then don't go.
I'm sure many of the sites that will be using this technology will offer (or all ready do) the ability to purchease accounts that dont have these ad's.
Buy one of these accounts and support your damn content provider, either that or view their ad's.
"Why should Microsoft be required to offer Real's whoreware product, laden with spyware and annoying popups and notifications. Could it be because competition is a good thing? Sure Real and their practices suck, but would you rather have no choice but WMP? "
They have the option, they can download it from the internet. How hard is that?
If I bought a computer with real installed I would expect a refund and build my own.
I think I remember my partents talking about that when I was a kid, something about freedom right? Must have been the good old days.
For this star destroyer (I DEVASTATOR) to be "appropriately sized" it would be allmost a city block, maybe 2.

This is simple people, Apple should have made a better DRM.
Just be cause this is Apple, and not Microsoft dosn't mean they should get away with bad DRM protection.
Apple should have known better, they wanted to protect the music they make avaliable, they should have spent much more time creating a better DRM.
They fsk up, now they pay for it, try again and move along.
No W's in that. Ind OS..

Mobile audio streaming
Warez anywhere.

How can so many damn people here on slashdot support and push the GPL and Open Source when so many of you don't even know what it really is.
Sure you know the meaning, but when it comes to what you can / can't do, who and how you can / can't use it, you people dont have a clue.

"may send the wrong message about antitrust enforcement priorities"
Yeah that message is don't do it or were going to bust your ass! I think their message is right on the money.
Judging from the size of most of their drivers for scanners and printers, the tarball will be bigger then my full OS install.
What format will it support.
What format will Ineed to use to transfer existing books to us it with.

"without a media player and 120 days to give programming codes to rivals in the server market"
If your worried about what media player you have on your servers, you shouldn't be in charge of these servers in the first place.
http://cgi3.ebay.com.au/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?Passp ortSignInShow&pt=-1&finalURL=
Did some more searching, and yes ebay ueses passport.
Does this mean paypal uses passport? If not will it?
http://www.passport.net/directory/default.asp?lc=1 033&PPDir=C
Links of passport using sites.
Ebay?

How can they think a tax is the right way to go about this.
Your saying even though I dont download music I have to pay a tax to musicians I hate, and would never listen to, we should have to pay a tax?
Being musicans is their job, if they cant afford to live off their music, they should get a better job.
If the Music industry cant surive off their current technology, they need to change it, not change the world around them.
Anyone think that maybe Microsoft has 42,000+ linux machines somewhere they needed to license?
