Gah! First in the writeup (20 times smaller) and now in the comments.
20 times smaller would be 1+(-20)=-19 (somebody else here mentioned it and got modded offtopic). 6 times smaller would be 1+(-6)=-5. So if Word takes 20 sec, your claim is that AbiWord would take -100 sec. The appropriate way to phrase it is "one-sixth the time of MS Word when I tested it".
Perhaps come up with a one-CD, bootable Linux distro specific for high school.
I know I'm late to the posting party here, but that's what SEUL is trying to do now. (Well, not exactly - they are actually creating a CD with the apps to go on top of Red Hat, Debian, etc.)
The one that keeps the serial number. We used this to 'upgrade' some XT's to Pentium servers when I worked at a university. (First we upgrade the case, then the motherboard, etc.) The only thing we didn't 'upgrade' would be the sticker with the equipment ID on it.
I watched a guy at a Siemons cabling dog-and-pony show terminate fiber using their new gee-neato-whiz-bang super-expensive fiber terminator in less than 30 seconds. In your case, I would have done what you did and buried a long patch cable, but for the professional installer...
$10 for Intel chipset (not bad - I've used this one).
or about $3 for a $hitty HSP56 micromodem (for which I refuse to give a link, as it is such a pathetic product)
I've got a Focus 9001 at home I'm not using (which IIRC is the same thing). The calculator LCD is broke, but AFAIK the keyboard macros still work. It's just collecting dust now, but if you want it, e-mail me (seriously).
What I am saying is, that if we are going to accept that we have a wait and background check on gun purchases,
I thought that that "if" is what started this thread.
then a "red-flags" list of very certain books is understandable in my eyes.
So, does that mean you monitor IP addresses of those who access the same content off an off-coast web site as well?
The problem is that the gun is a physical object. Making a copy would be very expensive (though not outright impossible) and "isn't worth it" for most people. Information (and that's what we're really talking about here - the "book" is just a medium) is easily able to be duplicated, making monitoring them impractical.
If such "red-flags" were implemented, I guarantee the information would just move to another medium.
I manage a network of ~300 PC's. To stop gator specifically, I have this in my named.conf:
zone "gator.com" {
notify no;
type master;
file "pz/gator.com";
};
and then in pz/gator.com I have:
snip
localhost A 127.0.0.1
APL BPL CPL DPL EPL FPL GPL HPL IPL
Why not use every letter in the alphabet? It's only fitting, I guess, since there are a million ways to write code, why not have a million ways to license it?
Ummm... I hate to point this out to you, but APL to ZPL is only 26, not a million. Back to 1st grade with you.
For the second method, please remove all your clothing from the waist down and have plenty of Vaseline on hand - because you're not even going to get kissed first.
I also think XP will probably be the last release of Office that Microsoft is able to sell because it has hit maturity and does just about anything and everything one could want.
1) You clearly underestimate the marketing machine Microsoft has.
2) There will always be another feature somebody wants.
I remember saying the same thing about MSWord 6. I was wrong then. You are wrong now.
Here or here

Sheesh. News for nerds indeed.
Now, feel free to mod me offtopic. :-)
So do you usually read while you drive?
Sure there is. It's called a Faraday cage.
They left the 'n' off the end.

Google for 'site:slashdot.org "by yourID"' will get you pretty darn close.
Yeah, but I've used a dozen or so Kyocera printers. If you ever get TO 100,000 pages (heck 30,000 for that matter), I'd be amazed. Pieces of shite.
Maybe their comparison was off, but their specs for the magic box is correct - 222mbps = 0.222bps = .02775 bytes/sec ~= 100 characters/hour

WinModems? They're much cheaper than that.

I'm using one of those now. While I rarely use any of the other buttons, having a 'Mute' button on the keyboard is very nice when the phone rings.
I have one of those, too. It's a Smith-Corona and even has a built-in whiteout tape dispenser.

Fixes all those pesky downloads.
Sure. But, as soon as you reject 60% to 90% of your paycheck, what happens?
Just because it's works well in theory doesn't make it at all feasible.

"hotter than the Sun" is no big deal
"hotter than the sun" is
Wrong.
Assuming you don't lie to DirecTV about your zip code, they will blackout your local games if its not a sellout.
TVRO (big dish) Sunday Ticket does the same thing.
so, there is no "legal way" for anybody to "receive any NFL game they want".
I thought it was lack of oxygen to the brain.
I didn't realize people were using anything except paper for joints now.
There is an MS KB article telling how to do the first method.
