Amen, if the labels that are all to often used don't have some sort of built in personal-recursional-definition, we will eventually run out of labels/words/titles all together, for fear of misuse/misunderstanding...
The use of *isms isn't static, it's dynamic- more of a guideline title than a means of defining one's self...I've never met two feminists with even 80% matching world views/belief systems...
I don't like the fact that there is no *.ogg support, but since the device is flashable, maybe the new firmware will add this (yeah right)-
There are a few reasons I would still consider buying a RAM based player...
*the size (smaller, lighter) *doesn't skip/take a beating while running (vs HD based players) *ability to act as portable drive (just handy) *cost (cheaper than the HD based players)
Granted it is handy to have your entire collection with you (HD players)- but I generally use a portable device like this for only a few hours at a time (any longer than that and I'm usually at a stereo or computer)-
Now the new Arcos multimedia player looks interesting...
I've always wanted to see a cow fly by like in Twister...
Ok, seriously, I know that they always tell you to get in a doorway, or bathtub, supposedly because it is a 'more sound structure'~ I would think you wouldn't want to be near porcelain at a time like that...
And not living in an area like that, how often do people build their own 'shelter' as opposed to a central/public one?
Itsn't it a moot point?

Funny, I don't remember anyone buying my time from me......speaking of buying time, really what do you think the shelf-life of Tivo is at this point? By the time the cable companies/dish folks get into the game, along with the pending legalities, will Tivo even survive? I hope so.
I could care less if they mention the RIAA or not, I enjoy hearing about interesting new products, especially tech-type toys. So "this story is not good enough" is from your perspective...with your wonderful paradigms...so yes, it was interesting enough for me to read even without the RIAA reference.
(And a dig at RIAA just adds a little bounus humor!)
"While we're on the subject of static typing, identifying with the makers will save us from another problem that afflicts the sciences: math envy. Everyone in the sciences secretly believes that mathematicians are smarter than they are. I think mathematicians also believe this. At any rate, the result is that scientists tend to make their work look as mathematical as possible. In a field like physics this probably doesn't do much harm, but the further you get from the natural sciences, the more of a problem it becomes.
A page of formulas just looks so impressive. (Tip: for extra impressiveness, use Greek variables.) And so there is a great temptation to work on problems you can treat formally, rather than problems that are, say, important."
I must be a painter ninja then, because I have a combo computer AND math degree. Now, I can tell, you all automatically think that I am smarter than you! >:) Envy much? hehhehe
...first of all, it benefits them to *not* report failures- Heck, even lying about successfully breaking some encryption probably happens~...secondly, they aren't going to report failures, because they need to justify the budget and manpower to continue in this vein (ok, not that success/failure in the government seems to be a major factor in the funding decisions >:)...third, if they want it bad enough, there are other means (thumbscrews anyone?;)
Definately companies count on at least some percentage of their rebates not being paid out: someone loses the necessary paperwork, someone forgets to fill it out, someone is too lazy, etc...
I see your point, but in many cases, it is not simply a matter of specific or general vocab available...for example, the 'levels of respect' built into Korean (and other asian languages)- how you phrase something doesn't always have to do with the vocabulary (in the strict sense of the word)~ "respect" is built into the language, which HAS to shape, to some extent how the thoughts are formed. And since we are talking about ancient/dying languages, most likely the written or recorded expression of thought is all we will have to work with at some finite time in the future...
While in school I was the research assistant to a linguist who was trying to preserve a dialect of Mongolian. Sadly, my professor died prior to finishing that work, and the last generation of people who speak that particular dialect will all be gone within about 20 years.
I've seen quite a few posts asking WHY we need to preserve these kinds of things...
there are many reasons- language is simply a physical representation of our thoughs, or more generally our though process~ how we speak shows largely how we think...saying why should we preserve languages is akin to saying why do we write history books~
