  1. Technology is not a substitute on How To Balance Life And Technology For Kids? · · Score: 2, Insightful

Use technology as a tool and a toy, not as a substitute for parental guidance like so many do.

In my opinion, children should be introduced to as much as the world has to offer. The problems occur when parents sit a child in front of a television or a computer and say "here, entertain yourself."

These are the kids that grow up with technology as a substitute for guidance. They will obviously become attached.

Moderation and interaction are the key.

I work at a school that received the E-Rate "grant". Unfortunately, I wish they would have given me a million dollars to work with and do it myself. There are various ethernet ports that seem to go nowhere. Many of the hubs were placed in the most ridiculous places. I am actually typing this right now over an E-Rate installed network.

Being the school's "everything digital" guy, I expected to have a little access to the routers, switches, etc... Unfortunately, not only am I not allowed to telnet in, all the equipment is locked up preventing me from even troubleshooting the ports to nowhere.

Overall, I ejoyed our strands of CAT-5 that were strung throughout the school by parent volunteers better than our new million dollar network.

  13. Re:Satellite has one big advantage on Cable TV Versus Satellite TV? · · Score: 1

TiVo will work, but to my knowledge, you need one specifically for satellite (i.e., standard store bought one for cable won't work).

We have a TiVo that we used for cable at an old residence. We recently moved and setup satellite, no go.

The problem is my TiVo has a cable tuner, not a satellite tuner built in.

Maybe the newer models support both satellite and TV.

  18. Open Source Nasa Software. on NASA Report Advocates Switch to Open Source · · Score: 1

I'm not a big follower of the space program itself, but common sense seems to lend itself to this idea. One would think that if NASA's software was open-sourced and being contributed to by people all over the world, it would greatly reduce the number of million dollar mishaps. This wouldn't help with hardware problems (malfunctioning sensors, etc...) but I strongly believe this move would make our space program that much better.

I truly hope this isn't a public relations ploy to take attention away from the shuttle disaster. I hope that this is a smart move to help keep a similar event from happening again.
