Will we now have to worry about laptop use on the Interstate?
Now? Over a decade ago, I saw a computer parts catalog selling a laptop mount for the car - that attached to the steering wheel. It scared the hell out of me because I can easily see people on the DC Beltway using it during their commute. It wasn't just a distraction, it was a hindrance to the already poor driving ability of most people on the road.
..and I don't believe they ever got DVD playback down pat.
I considered whatever quirks it had to be a good thing for a while. Before I got my own DVD player, my PS2 was the only thing that would play my copy of The Seven Samurai properly. My roommates Onkyo DVD player would get stuck on the menu or play but skip a couple of chapters in the middle depending on how it was loaded. My computer (Windows or Linux, didn't matter) would play the sound, but not the video. My PS2, on the other hand, would play everything just fine.
After signing up for the DNC, I went from 4-5 telemarketing calls a week to maybe 1 a month. A win, right?
Unfortunately, no..
In place of those 4-5 calls a week, I'm now getting 5+ calls a day from charities, surveys, and political groups. And the political ones are the worst. I've had days where they call 30 times and leave messages on my answering machine every time. I'd gladly go back to not being on the list, but it's too late now. My number has already been gathered from the DNC for all these exempt groups, so I will still have to deal with their calls. (And no, asking to be taken off their list doesn't work, they keep calling.)
"A security team with oversight of every Microsoft product from its Xbox video game console to its Word program for creating documents has broad authority to block shipments until they pass security tests."
So.. Have they been on a 10 year vacation or something?
All you have to do is say 'put me on your do-not-call list'. That's it. THEY'LL NEVER BOTHER YOU AGAIN.
Which is impossible with 95% of the calls I get. It's extremely rare for a real person to be on the other end of the line. In fact, of the calls that I get, it's rare for anything to be on the other end of the line. And most of them are blocking caller-id, so it's impossible to report them. Unfortunately, I have to answer calls with no caller-id info because of some of the agencies I work with or places that friends work which block caller-id.
The DNC is useless. I don't see why they're even complaining.. They use the list to farm numbers now.
I have been signed up since the beginning, and I get 2-3 calls per day. Before signing up, I got 2 or 3 calls a week on a bad week. 90% of these calls are reported as 800 numbers (which I believe are false) with no names on my caller id and there is never anything (not even a recording) on the other end of the line - some are even blocking caller id, now, making impossible to file complaints. I have filed, literally, hundreds of complaints on the DNC, and nothing has been done about it. From the FTCs FAQ:
39. What happens to my complaint?
Do not call complaints will be entered into the FTC's Consumer Sentinel system, a secure, online database available to more than 1,000 civil and criminal law enforcement agencies. While the FTC does not resolve individual consumer problems, your complaint will help us investigate the company and could lead to law enforcement action.
Violations get put into a database and could lead to action. Yeah, right...
I like them a lot and I did not find this in either California or anywhere in the north east.
Try New Hampshire (motto 'Live Free or Die').
I always got a kick out ot the motorcyclists taking their helmets off when entering NH and proceeding to go 75+ on the 55mph highways..
NH also has some very large education problems, because each school district is funded by the local property taxes (the only form of taxation in NH, most of which goes to the town/county). The counties with all the big expensive houses and/or higher populations have far more money for the schools than the very rural northern counties.
Don't refresh the page when you get the display problem. Cause a reflow. Until I installed SlashFix (which, IIRC, does the same thing), I would bump the font size, then put it back to normal (+, -) after the page had finished loading. This fixed it every time.
"See, they're McDonald's... I'm McDowell's. They got the Golden Arches, mine is the Golden Arcs. They got the Big Mac, I got the Big Mick. We both got two all-beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles and onions, but their buns have sesame seeds. My buns have no seeds."
By the time the first game got to me, my trial was almost over. There was no way I was going to be able to get it back to them before the trial ended even if I mailed it back that day.
I gave them 2 months and a few games. The whole time it never took less than a week for them to get a game to me. I'm not talking about round trip, either. From the time I got the "shipped" email, it was 7-10 days before I recieved the game.
I may try them again if they open up some distribution centers on the east coast, but not until then.
Not to detract from Kim or the Enlightenment team any, but (from the bits of the e-dev list I've read) Kim doesn't work on e17 very much. He is the e16 maintainer.
Or even worse. Microsoft Movie Maker (comes with XP). Not only can you not choose to not install it, but you can't uninstall it. Even by force!
I've tried removing the Movie Maker directory on the XP box I have at work (it's a work computer, I won't be making movies on it (not that I'd use MS Movie Maker if I was going to)) and a minute or two later, IT'S BACK! 0.o
"Another portion of the bill says that states would be required to link their DMV databases if they wished to receive federal funds. Among the information that must be shared: All data fields printed on drivers' licenses and identification cards, and complete drivers' histories, including motor vehicle violations, suspensions and points on licenses."
Having worked in Law Enforcement messaging systems the last several years, I can say that this is already here, and has been for ages (except maybe the federal funding bit). All of the states are connected via NLETS (National Law Enforcement Telecommunications System) and most share their DMV records directly over that network. Some states (like Maryland) don't have their DMV records automated, so you they tell you to send a request (still via NLETS) to a certain station where the lookup will be performed.
The amount of data returned (for DMV records) varies from state to state, but some do include all of the above info. Some are just a minimum - the info on the card itself and the licensees status (active, expired, suspended, etc).
The federal law enforcement agencies, Canada, and Interpol are also members of the NLETS network.
You also don't see Coke products in a Pepsi cooler.
I've seen this in many gas station convenience stores. In the small ones, there's generally only one cooler with Coke, Pepsi, and whatever else. Sometimes there's Coke or Pepsi logo on the side, but it will sometimes have both in there together.
...when you ask where the Pepsi is, they don't direct you to the Coke.
When was the last time you ate out? A lot of places, if you ask for a Coke, they'll ask "Is Pepsi OK?" (or vice versa). Sometimes they don't even ask and give you the other since they only have one form of cola (or pop or soda or whatever you want to call it).

Four words: Do Not Call List

Those are Tim's skills. Some idiot decided it'd be more PC to have Lex steal them for the movie.
The Hubble Constant - Fluctuating since 1929
I came home one day to find 27 new messages on my machine. All but one of them was "This was a political survey call. We will try again later."
The other was some pediatrics office leaving a reminder message about an appointment for my kid. News to me. I wish people would tell me I had kids..
So.. Have they been on a 10 year vacation or something?
There's a trailer of sorts at YouTube. Looks like it could be really cool.
I forsee a lot more engines going "Ker-Blammo!" as Steve Matchett puts it..
There.. Fixed that for you..

No thanks! I tried them out last year.
