The blog post makes it sound like Reiser was the supreme overlord of the Linux operating system, and that his prison sentence means that Linux will be destroyed...
Folks, get over it! These things happen! People make mistakes, mess up, or wind up in jail, but everyone adjusts to the change. Just use ext3! Or better yet, if your so worried about it, MAKE YOUR OWN DAMN FILE SYSTEM (but just don't become homicidal in the process)
Linux is worked on by MILLIONS OF PEOPLE worldwide. SO that means one persons departure will NOT destroy Linux, since there are still PLENTY more people to work on it. Remember the Gizmondo? That got ruined because of one of the owners' connections to the mafia. Most of the board of directors and CEOs wound up in prison, so the Gizmondo was canceled. But the difference here is that WE HAVE MILLIONS OF PEOPLE TO PICK UP THE PIECES!
I will only be worried when EVERY Linux programmer in the world winds up in prison...
I remember hearing about an open-source Mac OS operating system in the late 1990s or early 2000s, but the company making the operating system got sued out of existence....
I would like to know what the FBI considers "illegal". If it's just something like plotting a terrorist attack, or downloading child porn, and their just sniffing for child porn being downloaded, and can find a 100% foolproof way of putting legal action towards those downloading child porn, and not look at ANYTHING not flagged as child porn. (as in not arresting innocent people for clicking the wrong link or getting the wrong e-mail, label them "child predators", cause them to loose their jobs, friends, and family, then realize their innocent, apologize, and send them out into their ruined lives)
However, if by "illegal" they mean:
1. Expressing your political opinions or views on important issues
2. Using BitTorrent in any way, shape, or form; legally or illegally
3. Downloading music, movies, or any other "illegal" things
4. Being a liberal
5. Clicking the wrong link or searching the wrong thing on Google
I would have a BIG problem with this. I think we all know that if the FBI were allowed to do this, eventually the RIAA or MPAA will come up and ask for those records, turning a government agency designed to make us all safer into the copyright police (or dictator). Our tax dollars are NOT going to go towards forwarding the RIAA/MPAA's fucked up crusade against the consumers.
And I would have a HUGE problem if the FBI just want to spy on people who oppose the government (which is a hell of a lot of people). It's like the airport screening system: you have a "random" chance of being searched, but the guy next to you, who is a Muslim, has a 100% chance of being searched simply based on what he looks like and how he thinks. So will people like us/.ers, liberals, and anti-government or anti-war people end up being targeted by this thing?
Just goes to show you how much better Linux, Apache, MySQL, and PHP are than the thousand dollar Windows Server, thousand dollar Microsoft SQL Server, thousand dollar Microsoft ASP.Net development tools!
C/C++ will be dead when there is not one.c,.cpp,.h, or other C/C++ file extension in the/usr/src folder! If an entire OS is made with it, it's still alive to me!
I've seen this a lot, especially on ports of old console games or games being developed for PCs and game consoles: Game makers decide that multi-user "co-op" play, or 2 people playing a game on the same PC, does not seem "logical" enough to include in the game.
... Let's all file a class action lawsuit against the RIAA because they refuse to supply us all with something to guard us against illegal lawsuits by the RIAA!
This looks very similar to the iDisk system from Apple...
They make a big deal out of passwords too, but Microsoft's technical support gives your Windows Live ID password out to anyone who calls the Xbox Technical Support claiming to be you....
They do a damn good job claiming EVERYTHING Bush has done, injecting right-wing politics into everything, and being the opposite of "Fair and Balanced" (more like "Tipped to the Right"), the government doesn't even need to worry about Fox spreading the truth on TV!
Does anyone else find it unusual that all this comes just a day after the FBI requested more $ to spy on, and prosecute, the downloading of "illegal" files on the Internet, and use the system that spies on the Internet to find people using BT?
I've noticed Florida seems to enjoy destroying education (Besides being the residence of Jack Thompson, I heard they wanted teachers to be able to substitute their own beliefs for the scientific facts behind evolution). Maybe this movie will become a mandatory film to show in Florida high schools?
... is a documentary about how fucked up education in the United States is right now, from kinder gardeners getting in trouble for "sexual harassment", "Zero Tolerance" policies, now used at many schools, that punish EVERYONE, treating innocent kids and victims as bad people, how No Child Left Behind is continually destroying education, etc.
Although this film _does_ look somewhat interesting; every documentary and TV report I've seen on TV about this subject is usually pro-Darwinist and, most of the time, completly ignores ID... It'll be interesting to see how they back up ID with scientific facts......
Anyone ever hear of that Cavemen sitcom on ABC? The one that was completely based on the Geico car insurance company's "So easy a caveman can do it" ads? It was ALL over the news when they announced that show, so ABC and Geico got a whole shitload of publicity.
Now could we see a show that centers completely on President Bush or far right-wing people on Fox????
I grew up on AOL dial-up Internet, and for some time was forced to use the AOL Browser... I hated it! When I finally switched to high-speed Internet and could use an actual browser (Firefox), I couldn't believe I spent almost 10 years using AOL's poorly designed Internet "browser"!
I don't even think you can use evidence collected by this type of illegal surveillance in court! So if I, for example (NOTE TO THE NSA, I AM NOT DOING THIS, I'M SIMPLY GIVING AN EXAMPLE), hacking into some computer, the NSA catch me with their illegal warrantless computer, and try to try me in court, can't I just challenge the evidence they are using or something? Claim it can't be admitted into court?
In all respects, I knew this would happen. You destroy civil liberties with a pointless war, and what do yuo get? A POLICE STATE. What the United States are doing IS HOW HITLER GOT HIS RISE TO POWER! Could we be overthrown by an evil dictator soon?
... Video games caused gangs, drugs, and gang violence in the Brockton, MA area and throughout Boston in Massachusetts. So the mayor of Boston, Thomas Menino, wanted to outright "ban" video games in many parts of Suffolk County, including Brockton and Boston.
HELLO? Rap music, for instance, would be a much better medium to censor and show your racism.
As a high school student, I have been told time and time again about how "budget" issues result in no new textbooks, computers, or building renovations this year. I think education is more important. After all, who would be left to work at NASA if public education continues to fail?
Intel "graphics cards" are on most regular PCs, and they can't run shit. They're integrated, so if you try to run a game, the computer takes some RAM and makes it graphics RAM, which slows everything down...
... what percentage of the teachers and parents surveyed watch Fox News. Maybe they still think video games caused Columbine, Virgina Tech, NIU, and all the other school shootings...

I got an HTTP 503 error ("Service Temporarily Unavailable"). Guess the Slashdot Effect strikes again!
:)
Btw I wasn't downloading it, I like my current Debian setup better

Windows on XO Laptops would run like Windows XP on my 10 year old Dell XPS D333... it's a mirical I even got Windows XP on that hunk of junk!

It's been a while since I've seen such a lively discussion... it seems like evolution debates are always popular.....

Hope someone brings their camera to the movie, films it, and puts it on BitTorrent :)
Maybe they'll release it free though...
Wow, talk about a slow government! We knew this was a problem for, what now, 15 years???? It took him 15 years???

Will this go the same way Circuit City's ill-fated DIVX movie rental system goes?
