In other words, I think the problem is that we try to fuck with something bigger than us and, in doing so, delay the natural adjustment that will occur if we let it.
Yeah but you're running off the assumption that the arrogance of the human race will step aside and allow that inanimate "nature" thing to act smarter. Not gonna happen.
Except you're kind of over looking the fact that one of the main ways of extending life will be actual modification of DNA. Theoretically, once we know everything about our genetic code, those who can afford it will just pick out genetic variations they like and say "I'll have 2 of those, oh and that one seems popular with that one country, let me have that one too." The beginning should be fun at least to watch those rich who have no idea how it all works and just insist on getting genetic variations that won't work properly for them. I look forward to famous people with toes growing out of foreheads and such.
So there I was. I took over a production database (literally the third guy in like 6 months, I know, I trained my last boss), had info not archived for about 2 years, 20-30 million rows in the most used table (maybe 1-2 necessary). So I start moving the data into the table set aside for such things that just hadn't been used as it was doing too much at a time and had been timing out for the last 2 years. Get most of the data over there and that database fails. Start a restore, transaction logs just gone. Not to worry there's archived backups of all the transaction logs! Oh, they need a password. And no one whose managed the system for the last 4 years has had to do a restore, so of course no one knows it. Now it's no big deal as the damn thing hadn't been used for two years, but for some reason, now, drives are starting to fill up. Jobs failing. Still no big deal, I just get to figure it out. I ain't a DBA, I'm just the guy that knew the most about this particular system, damned if they're gonna spend money on someone that knows what they're doing! So, tickled that my JOB actually is forcing me to run a brute force on corporate zips, having never done so, I now see just how long those damn things take. Wow, next year sometime I'll have the password! (hopefullly) Lookin pretty dim, but there's one job that's not failing, goes off every night with out a hitch. Out of morbid curiosity have to see what the process that isn't failing is. Oh it's a batch file, starting some other batchfiles. Oh they start an app called winrar and what's this? a -p with some text after? surely that's not plain text password in a friggin batch file!??!? Oh look no brute force needed.
So what you're saying is that we can also take whatever means we feel is right to shut him the hell up and feel just as morally superior as he does because the ends justify the means? Awesome! Since it's just a popularity contest I say we just lynch him and see how many people complain. That's all he's doing. Worst case we can always print some headlines in our favor once he's silenced.
That is of course the other extreme of what he's doing.
Good point, if this perception is continually speeding up, how long until it gets bored? What does one do when they have all the time in the world? When the piddling reactions times of this slow body become far to statuesque to stand? Such a being would loathe being disconnected from something at least able to keep up with the synapses it's firing. Everytime someone asked you to get up from the computer/something digital would be like being turned to stone for a few hundred years. They'd totally have to build in an out, many peeps would go crazy.
Is apparently augmenting our intelligence with way to get more intelligence... I'm so going to laugh if they find out that intelligence is not a "value" that can be increased. Of course raw computing power can be, but that's not intelligence. It's far closer to actually being philisophical view points and the ability to distinguish one from another. They're totally gonna find the world's smartest computer is a philosophy major and sits around doing the electronic equivalent of smoking pot all day. Cuz a smart computer could do that.:)
I have to wonder all this work we do towards reading minds, what's everyone gonna think when they figure out how much we really do think about sex? Cuz damn.
Might be fun to watch the expressions on the scientists face as they realize what's going on tho. "That guy was a fluke, the next will about something else I'm sure!"
If you really wanted lots of evidence on them, do it on their home wireless network from yo car. Wouldn't even have to spoof any IP's. Heck you could prolly even change around some computer names, mac addy's...
That's how we all start speaking chinese Firefly style. We say we aren't gonna obey censorship and fight to get the games somewhere else. They tell the Chinese public we hate all that is good(they won't even come into our wonderful country), they invade with the love and support of those they subjugate. That's how these things work.
And if she had made it a primary project and the other people wanted to publish afterwords, could they have sued? and been just as justified? what if it was for charity?
Wait, so you're saying this boils down to someone publishing something similar to something she wanted to publish, before she could? and her answer is to sue? and the justification is charity?
Actually if all those parts of those modules are made of small enough electronics, it prolly wouldn't look any different than the blobby terminator to our eyes...
Not necessarily a few million. All it would take is a couple really incriminating emails and the right person to say "What's the best way to make it go away?" to someone technical. Who then says "Well, I guess theoretically we could erase all of -insert craziness- , but that would be like 5 million emails!"
Anyone ever hear what happened to the second generation i-Ram from gigabyte? There was mad intel on the first and then it all just went away... I want the 8Gig, SATA 2. It just never came out.
That reminds me, I always wondered why no terrorist organisation ever just went to a pole and dropped a few tons of black dye all over the ice. I mean if you want to freak people out...
Ok, now that I read it, it doesn't work like this, but the botnets could still get around it. For their little "computational puzzle" they would just need to know what kind of puzzle or list of puzzles and the botnet could have them already solved when time to ping like crazy. As for letting the machine work at it's own pace, it may still be able to serve info out, but only in response to that which is getting in, which will still be more than it can handle. I guess you could elect to just empty buffers on all incoming botnet sheilds, but it would accomplisgh the same thing as a ddos as valid transactions still wouldn't be able to happen. I say not impressive, unless I'm understanding it completely wrong.
Hey so couldn't the evil hackers figure out there was a computer it was goin through to get to the main one, compromise it and get the list of good botnets from that one? Then just moniter all the bots and when they switch, you switch as well. I don't think you could avoid a ddos with just your own botnet. If that's the goal.
In reply to suggestions that Slydial erodes and cheapens genuine human interaction, a MobileSphere exec says
Did they actually reply? Or did they redirect to a prerecorded message saying this?

I have that same combination on my luggage!!
If you suspect this has happened and reinstall your OS, is that destruction of police property? Will they just keep breaking into your place?
Wow. Something about the phrase "winning purple hearts" just makes me laugh. You Win!!

I don't see how you get lead paint out of a plastic susbstrate though...
Heh, Kinda like most shashdot readers.

If they stole hardware from high profile places, they prolly post here...

Some people really need to be called out on being a poopyhead tho...

PHB then says "Do it, or you're fired!"
Simple as that.
