Information Week also victim of MyDoom.sd variant not detected previously...
("Wait, we've been what?... that's OK, nobody needs to know that... OK, let me finish here!")
Apparently, readers of a poplular linux forum have altered the code and redirected the attack at information week. Modifications include browsers from all different computing platforms hitting the site at roughly the same time. Somehow the virus has infected platforms such as BSD, varieites of Linux, and even Mac OS X, but there seems to be a very low percentage of Windows hitting information week. There even appears to be infection of some Amiga systems. It appears no one is safe anymore!
But here's a review done my Univ. of Maryland's HCIL group (Human Computer Interface Labs). They presented their review at a symposium and it wasn't all that great... anyway here's a pdf if anyone's interested. Had some major interface issues according to the presentation.
It's not a head-to-head comparison... the iPod does music and does it well. This aims at somewhat of a different market, doesn't it?
Footprint: The iPod is pretty much invisible except for the head phones. This looks a little clumsier and larger... not so portable... the iPod is credit-card sized pretty much.
It's going to run CE... whose selling point is not rock-solid stability
Microsoft has once again seen someone else beat them to a market and they're jealous... so, if they 'win' (and does that mean 'killing the iPod?), what are the odds of it being by a superior product? I'm not saying they couldn't... but really.. what are the odds?
The MWSF keynote has yet to take place... Apple's security on new releases/rumors has been pretty good as of late
Personally, I'm curious to see what Steve his up his sleeve at MWSF.
Had just ordered a refurb powerbook 12"/867/SuperDrive on Tuesday. Didn't really *need* the SuperDrive, but figured it would be good for backing up. Called them to tell them I wanted in iBook instead. My PB order is still on the road to my house, but they helped me get the process rolling to turn it around when it gets here.
Already have my order in for the 933/14" G4 iBook and the 160GB FireWire Drive for back ups (as well as an extra 512 MB RAM). But now I have to wait for this one to ship:(
And another plus, Apple Care is cheaper on the iBook (at least via my.edu discount), so that freed up some cash!
I just tell 'em... "Oh, yeah, that Windows virus thing, eh? Sorry, I don't really do Windows, I use Mac and *n*x. I hear that's a real nasty one though". Then you smile, let out a light chuckle (or smirk) and shake your head.
The University of Maryland HCIL had a conference earlier this year. I was in the same hand-held session this guy was in. I checked his picture, and that's him for sure.
The next day he was showing Ben Schneiderman some of this stuff at the open house. A bunch of us looked on as they chatted, planned visits, golf outings and talked about how it all worked.
Depending on the queries he gave it, this one program would chew through data from usenet. and give back all kinds of stats and then draw relationships It even did graphical representaitons of users' actvity. Density of posts in a single thread versus starting new threads, frequency of posts, replies vs. new messages etc would be denoted by distance from the main timeline, darkness and width of the circel and so forth. You would look at a wide but faint circle and say (and I may be off in how the key worked, but...) "This guy sticks to the topic over a long period of time" or you could denote the flame warrior or the vagrant by their graphical representation and so forth. The way the data was processed was really cool and how quickly you could start to decipher the keys was really interesting.
The Big brother implications... well that's a whole 'nother thing there too isn't it?
What's important to me is that the current ones should become cheaper, refurb or new. The shame is they prolly won't bump the powerbook line. I'd love to hit a G4 Powerbook on a firesale...Ah well, not like I had the money anyway.
The analogy breaks down and this is mostly off-topic, but my karma's great, so what the hell!
When I lived in Brazil ('92-'94), we would often buy picol (popscicle... sp?) from the street vendors. If you bought one with friends in the vicinity, you offered them a bite before eating it yourself. Of course, you didn't offer one a bite without offering anyone else there a bite. Often times, your popscicle would have only one bite left once it got back to you.
Free as in 'free ice cream' (for your friends at least =)
FYI....
"Fazendo a massa"
massa is something like 'dough/batter'. putting a "mo na massa" is putting a hand in the dough. Can be generlized to 'mix' or whatever you're mixing/making.
And my nick (galego) means 'honkey' (more or less) in Brazilian Portuguese... in case you were curious.
As a relatively Young Nerd, I 'm willing to admit that I never had a clue that Unix was trademarked. To me, it has always been a *type of* operating system (and a much better alternative server platform to MS offerings).
I wonder if it's been kept quiet cuz everyone knows it's a bunch of crap and hence Open Group doesn't want that publicity. It's been 18 months and still nowhere near trial, and it seems like many here are just now hearing about it.
What next?/. sued for having Unix as topic of discussion without licensing code and obtaining the proper permissions in triplicate? Sheeesssh!
You make some good points. Not enough to convince me to reach into my pocket on Maher's behalf...but all the same, I can appreciate what you're saying.
Sorry....I don't have time or interest for an education via Google on everything. And I also don't necessarily believe everything on the internet is true. Yes that's a big sarcastic generalization...but my point is, that I'm overloaded. I'm really beginning to cease caring about anything except my family and my personal interests. I also don't believe/assume everything in life is part of the government conspiracy to screw me and my fellow citizens over.
<extreme sarcasm>Besides, I figure since I'm white, male and conservative I should be safe. Unless of course, I get nixed by some affirmative action quota.</extreme sarcasm>
There is a world of difference between trusting a person, and trusting an organization.
True...but last I checked, there are no people-less organizations. And I generally believe people are good. Abstracting that out, I give people, and yes...even organizations the benefit of the doubt. So...you ask "Why not give Mike the benefit of the doubt?" right!?!? Well, if I knew Mike, I probably would. If I knew the people in the FBI, I probably would too. So...when it comes down to it, what can I do for Maher? Just about nothing at the moment, since I"m not gonna throw money at his cause. You want to write me a canned letter to send to a legislator that I can send as mine? Have at it! And since you say...
No, it doesn't. The Constitution is the supreme law of the land. It demands due processs, a speady and public trial, and all the other rights and liberties that we're (or at least used to be) proud of.
I guess you better stop wasting your time with me and get busy with someone who can help make more of a difference, cause I'm done screwing with./-er's for the day...I've got work to do, a house to fix up and a family to take care of.
Dude. We're talking about the government of the United States of America. The people who brought you COINTELPRO, MK-ULTRA, the War on (some) Drugs, the "police action" in Vietnam, Operation "Just Cause", Camp X-ray, RICO, Waco...the list goes on.
Well..Dude, I have no idea what half the things you're talking (COINTELPRO, RICO) about are (But just because I"m not paranoid doesn't mean the gov's not out to get me right?). There are both very trustworthy and very untrustworthy people in and out of the government. My bro-in-law works for the state dept. and is a very good, trustworthy person. You have no more or less reason to trust him than I do Mr. Maher Hawash, no?
And pray tell...what rights did the victims of real terrorists and serial killers have? What happened to their rights?
Apparently, the law allows for what's going on. If you don't like that or have some astounding evidence that shows Mr. Hawash should not be held (other than shouting 'Civil Liberties' and 'Due Process' as loud as you can), use the appropriate process and talk to your legislators or find a way to have the FBI brought up on the appropriate charges.
First of all, thanks for not flipping off into./ knee-jerk reaction mode...even while in rant-mode.
You have some very valid points, but leave some questions as well...
My first reaction was "that's what you get for pissing off an entire people".
What 'people' is that? A fanatical bunch of wacko people as far as I can tell...but then again, I don't know Ousama personally either. Still, no way to justify an atrocity like that!
I keep hearing "appeasement never work with terrorists", but what you need to realise is that what is terrorism to you and me is considered freedom fighting by the people doing it.
(What was considered a success for the US/Kuwait in '91 was also considered a victory by Saddam...go figure) And are they seeking freedom from the US...freedom from what?
<synnicism & rant>
If you don't afford terrorists their rights (whatever that is), you're wrong. If you do... 3,000 people die in a flaming building. Mossaoui openly spit on the US practically in court, but we had to afford him his 'rights'. We want our rights and liberties, but we don't want any accountability attached to that.
</ synnicism & rant >
I speak Arabic and have even spent some time in the Middle East. Wonderful people in general! I agree that US policy sucks towards the Middle East...specifically Palestine/Israel. The Egyptian family I was hanging out with agreed that suicide bombings are just as terrible as bull-dozing people's homes. Assumptions were made of me cuz I was american and it goes on and on.
I guess our laws do need to be looked at, but I'm not going to fund someone's defense or whatever needs to be done for Maher Hawash cuz someone put up a website.
...people who up and cry about these sorts of incidents and call the government oppressive are also the ones that cry about why couldn't we stop 9/11 and why couldn't they have had the necessary info available etc. They are, in general, always looking to blame someone for something.
On a personal level, I sincerely hope Mike is treated fairly and due-process is followed. I don't know Mike/Maher, nor do I know why he was detained. I don't know who is running the freemikehawash.com site. I have no more reason to trust those people/that person more than I do the FBI folk that nabbed Maher/Mike. What reason should I have to trust one more than the other?
The freemike site describes him as a family man with an investment in is community. Well, we also hear all the time about people who were "quiet", "good neighbors", etc. that go postal or turn out to be serial murderers, etc. I'll contribute money, time, support, etc. when I have good reason to...not just cuz someone shouts for Civil Liberties! Civil Liberties! and the person is not from Male-Caucasia, USA.
Would it suck if Mike is innocent and is not being held with reason? Hell Yeah! Would it suck if Maher/Mike were a terrorist pilfering my credit card to fund some terrorist organizations? Hell Yeah!
Eventually, when people understand the issues, reasonable accomodations can be made.
Issues...such as will my tax money go to pay for new Segway paths even though I don't use one.
Similar to the my-property-taxes-go-to-public-schools-even-though -I-don't-have-kids issue...
Does my community (and do I) benefit because of educated kids? Will I benefit from reduced car congestion with more segways on their paths? Will I have to carry insurance for a segway or in case I hit someone on one?
Heh...it'll come down to a pissing match in the end...with some issue talk on the side.

Professors vs. WiFi

· Score: 1
I work at a University and am an 'Instructional Technologist/Instructional Designer/Instructional Developer'. In other words, I am a web developer with an instructional technology degree (Master's).
I can see both sides. There are faculty (i.e professors) that:
Don't care about technology and you wonder how or why they ever became professors. They will lecture and bore students and only do technology if mandated somehow. And it's hard to mandate tenured faculty into anything.
Cut the edge and do things that both help and hinder students with technology. They take risks. Sometimes students aren't bored, but they are frustrated. Sometimes they appreciate and benefit from the work the faculty are putting in.
Don't use technology heavily, but do a good job at what they do. They may not need it or can get the job done otherwise.
Facutly that want to do something but just can't find the time/money to do what they want. And they're probably the young faculty w/o tenure.
One thing I do know...the university system doesn't reward the risk-takers in terms of teaching/using technology to teach (at least not in my experience). Faculty get tenure and money by research, papers, and working with industry...not by doing a good job teaching.
I agree that students have the right to seek refuge from boring teachers (been there, done that...twice). I agree that teachers have the right to expel students who cause distractions or otherwise detract from the class by using WiFi devices (and other technology). I agree that teachers should make the class interesting enough for students and use the technology to their advantage. Problem is...the system doesn't reward that!
I just think it's a really bad thing for the whole Linux community.
And???...
So...is that because Apple or someone else somehow cheated linux out?
I have used Linux and probably will again some day. I'll run a web/file server or firewall on a home network with it and 'play' with it in general. Because I think Linux is better than OS X? No...because it's cheaper for me to set up and I can't afford a lot after paying for desktop equipment/SW. If Macromedia (and other SW makers) make their products on Linux (not just players), maybe I can go there some day.
Apple beat Linux to the punch by creating a good consistent GUI over top of a unix (or unix-like) core. Linux's strength still isn't the desktop. Apple is marketing usability...Not the Linux world's traditional strength.
Apple reaching M$'s market-share is long off and everything related to it is complete speculation.
besides the EFF that is. Some contact at the corporations that would actually get any attention? Anyone know?
I still believe you need to let a corporation know when idiocy or lack of customer service will lose them business. Target and BestBuy are the only two I would really shop from the list anyway...but I would prefer to let them know that, on principle, I'm very willing to shop elsewhere...say folks that do allow their prices to be listed/compared.
My laptop came with 512 MB of RAM, a 15" screen, a DVD player, and Windows XP Home Edition preinstalled, for $450 less than a comparable iBook. My recommendation is to go straight to Windows XP Professional; the extra features for mobile users are worth it.
But won't having to pay for the user licenses on the Professional edition for you or whoever else 'may use' the computer break that $450 in no time?
Sounds to me like Christmas presents ...SOME assembly required. Ya! sure! ...
