to be blunt and without starting a flame. who cares? I'm as excited as the next guy for newer faster machines. But, who cares. I'm using a 500 mhz amd now and its just starting to show a bit of grey. With the exception of super duper digital video apps and photoshop and super number crunching what does anyone need these machines for? nice to have one but word or abiword or star office work the same at 500 mhz as at 1 or 2 or 10 ghz. whats the app that will make a machine this powerful useful for the great majority of pc users? I'm really curious. I want honest answers.
When do i get to walk up to a screen and say "hey monkeyface whats my check balance" and have it respond "zilch, po-boy and who you callin monkeyface"? when i can get a system to do that then I'll give a damn.
seems like nothing to get worked up about. cool by me. heck maybe other companies might do something like this. open something then close it. we get source for some great software to start from (why reinvent the wheel) and they get to make money down the line.
guess there is something to be said about Lucas waiting eons to release on dvd. see this is why I wait till a prolific author is dead before I start readin their series. Look at the foundation series. not that I'm very glad asimov is dead but at least when I finished reading the foundation series I knew it was finally done. course then you have thigns like herbert's son writing prequels. just can't win.

I'm thinking Men's Health is not your typical slashdotter magazine.:)
I happen to love bugs bunny and his gang. Animaniacs was hilarious as well as tiny toons. Anime jsut has a different style, I'm not talking about drawing style, if its a soap opera (and I don't debate that it is) but its a soap opera for me. someone thats into giant robots and laser pistols and whacky camera angles and girls with huge round eyes. When they make a soap opera in the US with those things I'll watch it too.
ok, at least when they region encoded DVDs there was some semblance of a reason. what reason is there for this other than to squeeze nickles? And how many people import controllers anyway? is the market the gargantuan to warrant this? have corporations (not just MS) all collectively shoved their heads up their asses? jesus. anyone else in favor of rising up and just revolting against the corporations? screw revolting against the government lets jsut get rid of the corps and start again.
Apple might actually be able to do this. Something I've wanted for a while is for Operating Systems to give up on the the legacy support thing. Win95 was partly a pain in the ass because it was trying to be a next gen OS and still run 10 year old apps and support 10 year old hardware. Apple could release for x86 architecture but with this caveat.
"OSX/x86 is designed for the latest hardware ISA is not and never will be supported. PS2 is not supported. Parrallel is not supported. Serial is not supported. USB 2.0/Firewire/PCI/AGP/32 bit/64bit procs are. This is a next gen OS for a next gen machine."
If few people buy it, so what. Apple makes it money making Apples.
interesting comment. I'd mod you but you're already at 5. so I'll just reply. Just as we must find people to volunteer to get on the ship they might have to find volunteers to get off the ship. There's always someone that is tired of their environment. I think the biggest concern is keeping those types on the ship until they reach their destination. Also anyone that volunteers to get on might have a genetic predisposition to change. That may be transmitted down the lineage. Be interesting if the ship when it gets where its going still looks the same as it did when it left and hasn't been hacked by "environment-changer" types.
I must admit as well that microsoft does well in the interface device category. I happen to be fond of their joysticks. But, Logitech always seems to make their mice and keyboard better and for gamepads I've always got to go with a Gravis.
but congratulations anyway. Just fantastic. I hope your fiancee likes that picture from the website. Its in the browser cache of nearly every geek on earth by now.
hold up. the rules of the olympics have been very strict regarding political statements at the games. The IOC was rather generous in allowing first Rudy carry the torch in NY, the first politician allowed to carry the torch. They also decided that they would allow the Ground Zero Ensign into the ceremonies. Don't tell me that wasn't a political statement either. I was all in favor of it and it got me a bit misty but it was still a break with the rules of the games. I doubt we'll see anything like it again which makes it that much more powerful. The nations of the world decided to honor us and our dead in a way that no other nation has been honored before. As for the bribe scandal don't forget that it was americans doing the bribing in the first place. as for not hearing the results thats fine. pisses me off when i hear results before i see the event.
also did anyone catch the french with their half french half US flags? that was nice. mayeb they don't hate us after all. the comments I've seen so far seem to be the usual slashdot conspiracy crap. enjoy the games, root for the home team when they're in an event, root for the underdog when they're aren't.
How about lead lined backpacks? I don't know if lead would be ideal but (weight is not a concern, lead is not that heavy) shielding is what I'm thinking about. Is there a material that blocks the RFID signals? If so how do I sew it into my pants?
I don't think the argument that buying an imac means you're paying for less frustration really works. Mainly, anyone thats going to build one of these things has more fun building it than using it. Tracking down the best price is fun for some of us. Thinking up the best config is fun for some of us. Putting it together is fun for a great many of us.
hey bucko, sis I say I was bitching? No. I said that a problem with linux is duplication of effort. I should correct that. The reason why Linux will take forever from becoming a desktop OS (why thats the holy grail I don't know) is that we waste our time reinventing the fucking wheel. Last I checked the whole idea of OSS was to avoid reinventing the wheel. Hack on whatever the hell you want. But don't complain next year when once again Linux is not a desktop OS because instead of making one program the best is can be 20 people decided to write yet another spreadsheet program or mp3 player. Because god forbid we should submit our egos and work on someone elses program. I said its a problem. It is. God bless people that work for free but I don't want to hear the laments about linux not being a desktop OS next december.
grr argh.

The one day I don't have mod points. Mod the parent up alot. Biggest problem with open source is not user interface issues or complexity its the insane amount of duplication of effort for the programs that people actually use or would want to use.
I use Cups on my ML 8.1 box and have never had a problem with it and my Canon BJC-2100. This whole thing just seems like hogwash. And in response to the comment about cheap printers for less than 99$. My Canon cost about 49$ after a 20$ rebate. Its a fine printer and its USB. Just be careful what you buy.
I bought BeOS 4.5 and Scot Hacker's Bible, years ago. He convinced me then that BeOS was one of the greatest OSs that could have been. BeOS had more potential than Linux could ever dream of. (sacrilege, I know)
I have been very interested in Mac OS X since I first heard about it. I've been drooling over Mac Hardware since I first saw the G4 Towers and their translucent shells. Scot Hacker has a way of cementing a person's desire for something. I simply must have a Mac.
I'm beginning to think that if Scot Hacker began to extoll the virtues of lobotomy or the life of a eunuch I would fall in line. He's like the Pied Bloody Piper
I never intended to offend anyone and i was worried that i might have (if i did I apologize) but the fact that its genetic does not mean that it can't have the effect i mention. based on the explosion of autism and aspergers and sub-autism (to coin a phrase) amongst the families of our brightest and often most eccentric (cause I can't think of a better word) gives one pause to worry.
again, I never intended to insult anyone. I myself after reading the article began to think that I might fit in that sub autism category.
all i can say is that its a damn interesting article. a little spooky. I just hope its not true. I'd hate to think that the mating of two smart people produces a disabled person. It's like a planned obsolescence in the intelligence of the species.
I assume from what little they have at the website (haven't watched the movie yet) that you can switch from binary time to sexagesimal (i know i must have spelled that wrong) I actaully like the idea. I';m lousy at converting binary to decimal. This could be a great learning tool and nifty to boot.
all this talk of ps2linux being major begs the question "how major is it in Japan?" they've had it for months now. if i walk down the street in japan and bump into some average PS2 playing teens are they gonna know what the hell I'm talking about (lets assume i can speak japanese and they can speak english)? is ps2linux a big thing in japan and if not hwo can we expect it to eb a big thing here? I'm all gung-ho for ps2linux but where is it? i wnat one. hell i want a real pic. i want a ballpark price.

Sir, I have to say that is a truly brilliant post. You have too much time on your hands.
I was going to do the geek thing and at least see it on video. I can't now. Lucas has gone off the deep end. He's lost touch with his core. oh well.
