  1. Doubt it (look at the history) on Could Doom 3 be a Xbox Exclusive? · · Score: 1
I seriously doubt this will be true.

Carmack has held a grudge (well-deserved) against Microsoft since the days that OpenGL was forcibly replaced with Direct3D as the graphics standard.

This is also partially evidenced by the fact that Carmack switched his preference to Radeon as the preferred card during Doom3 development, while Nvidia at the time was frittering its resources to support the XBox.

All in all, I doubt Carmack would "orphan" his brainchild, so that Microsoft could benefit.

  2. Underground Networking on Can Game Developer Unrest Lead to Revolution? · · Score: 2, Interesting
I've always dreamed that something grass-roots like this would emerge, and hopefully I'd be able to participate. I guess I've grown cynical a bit, because when it comes to game design, it's hard to find people that share your vision for a game.

And I'm not just talking about the technical crowd either.. My closest friends are non-technical (as far as using a PC) strategy game buffs, so I proposed that we develop a PC game together, where I would take on all the burden of coding. I set up a Yahoo discussion board, but then later realized...it never got updated.

The biggest obstacle to this of course is procrastination. Has anyone had success in this area..? How did you meet your goal?

    Thx

  4. Darth and Luke's cheap saber on Star Wars Action Figures · · Score: 1

I still can vividly recall my Darth Vader action figure and his cheap light saber (the little plastic stick was always bent). It added a certain irony to the menacing dark mask.

  6. Re:Physc on What's Your Earliest Memory? · · Score: 1

Good point, I totally agree. There is a certain first memory experience I've claimed to have had, but recently have called that into question.
Now the true riddle here is...was that an actual memory?...or did I forget that it was, leading me to doubt its existence?

  7. Another cool review site on Shacknews Holiday Game Guide · · Score: 2, Informative

Check out metacritic, it's similar to Game Rankings, and it has a really nice interface. In addition, it provides "meta-reviews" of other things like music, videos, etc.

  8. Todo.... on Do People Really Use Their PDAs? · · Score: 1

It's quite easy to lull myself into not using my PDA more and more, since I'm always welcomed by a massive TODO list I've entered, when I pick it up.
Despite that, I think PDA usage will really take off when a cheap wireless broadband solution arrives.

  12. Pseudo-random Key-gen Security on An Introduction to GNU Privacy Guard · · Score: 2, Interesting

After reading Crypto, and now this Slashdot post, PGP has really heightened my interest.

I'm particularly curious about how secure the GnuPG key-gen process is. How "pseudo-random" is it? What's the likelihood that I could generate a private key matching someone else's?
    Should I be concerned?

  13. Look out Hollywood on Pencigraphy: Image Composites from Video · · Score: 3, Interesting
A good testing ground for this concept could be boot-leg movie craze.

All of the different recordings for a given movie are commensurably low-quality, but wouldn't it be great if you combine the best aspects of each (a "greater of goods") to generate one sharp quality movie. Testing it should be a little easier since you could use the rectangular silk-screen to calibrate the images. Food for thought.

  14. Slick PR on Gates Tries to Explain .Net · · Score: 1
"Microsoft also warned today that the era of "open computing," the free exchange of digital information that has defined the personal computer industry, is ending."

Very nice wording, pick a double entendre that connotes both something great(Open Source) and evil(unsafe nonsecure software).

Now we just have to worry about John and Mary Sixpack buying into all this crap.

It's a beautiful world we live in.
  15. Persistent Startcenter in Startup on Open Source, Real Media Mega-player? · · Score: 1
Does this mean we may no longer have to deal with StartCenter being in our system tray by default?

BUT, if they want to still leave the Draconian interface for enabling it, I have no qualms with that. :)

  16. Experts Exchange (Windows Programming) on Best Websites for Developers? · · Score: 3, Interesting
    Experts Exchange is incredible.

It's a great place to post/respond to windows programming questions. It uses a point-based system, so everyone's encouraged to help each other out. I once was stuck in a rut with a complex problem and received a well-detailed response in a matter of minutes! High on my list.

  17. Feature Request on A Web Browser in Your BIOS? · · Score: 1
What I'd really LOVE to see is an option in the BIOS to export screenshots (or just plaintext) of all of your settings. It's a bugger to go back and forth between this and the OS, trying to remember your settings...especially when you're building a system for a non-technical relative living in another state...otherwise it's a endless game of "What do you see on the screen now?" questions...

I did find a silly work-around to this problem, though. I used a digital camera to capture these settings, only problem is it's way too time consuming! :)

  19. 1992-1994 memories on Games in High School? · · Score: 1
I graduated HS in '92. At the time, Tetris was the big game...not exactly multiplayer material, but I used to show up early at school just to get in a few plays.

A few years later, I did some on-site after-hours tutoring for the school and noticed that all the PCJr's in my old computer classroom had been replaced by Pentiums, with a gaggle of students all engaged in a multiplayer session of Descent.

Now adays, nearly all the cool multiplayer games required a 3D card. I don't think the schools are paying for them, so I wonder what the new sensation is for the students...

  21. Waves of Nostalgia on Transformers On the Move Again · · Score: 1

Gone are those halycon days of sitting in a corner playing with my small legion of transformers, imitating the "ch-ch-choo-choo-ch" sound, while vocalizing a whole scenario. I had a small black box I kept those things in, and constantly would feud with a kid down the street that Gobots were for little kids, and Transformers were for the more sophisticated crowd.

I kept it up until one day (7th grade) I discovered I was out-growing the stuff. Maybe it was the advent of DinoBots that did it in for me. Honestly, were there any true DinoBot fans out there? My favorites were the triple-changers and stunticons. And what was the name of the blue corvette? Tracks? The best one of all IMHO

Anyway, today is so much more different..I know if I sat down again and watched the cartoon, it just wouldn't be the same. Too bad about that box of transformers, though. What I tried to collect sneakily ended up in my younger brother's hands, only to be lost or destroyed...

    Sniff..

  23. From bzflag to Virtual World? on Review: BZFlag 3D Tank Game · · Score: 1

Seeing the screenshots of bzflag somewhat reminded me of the tons of fun my friends and I had at Virtual World (the BattleTech Sim)

This leads me to ask...has anyone out there written a B-Tech sim game that resembles the Virtual World gameplay? Back then it was simple low-poly graphics, so I imagine it wouldn't be that hard to reconstruct. I'm sure that would amass the same cult following that currently surrounds bzflag.
