Yeah, his PIL reference kept jumping out at me. I recently found a couple of PIL albums I unfortunately purchased at one time (What did I know, I thought "Johnny Rotten!!!"). I then proceeded to try & *give* them away, to no avail...
I was thinking that maybe you could lock the source file during download. That would be similar to someone borrowing your cd, you no longer have access to it. Now, they can sure keep a copy after it's downloaded, but they could just as easily copy your cd. Then it would be more like loaning the music rather than distributing it.
That's my stock reply. I've got the 40 songs for $9.99us plan. I figure that's a quarter a pop, still better than iTMS. Plus, they have what I want, all the old punk rock stuff I currently have on cassette.
A couple of days ago I noticed they've picked up one of my all time favorite labels, Kill Rock Stars:)
And "real soon now" they're supposed to have a plan to let you pay as you go for overages...

I guess that does still happen. I'm so used to companies bombing, and recent (and not so recent) MS activities have made emulating Gates non-PC. I remember when he was cool. Geeky guy becomes unimaginally wealthy. You matter how you look at it, never having to ever worry about money would be pretty cool. I'd forgottent that I ever wished I could be like Gates, and I can hardly imagine it. Now I can't stand MS & their practices. I wonder if MS changed or I did...
I think you'd be surprised at how well the Netscape name is. I do support for a lot of local small (2-10 user) local networks, and whenever someone gets a new machine they need the "newest Netscape". See, they heard it was so much better than IE. Of course, most of them heard it way back in the 3.x & 4.x days, but they still remember it. They don't think of software evolving (even a lot of programmers I know). "Yeah, I have antivirus" and it's dated 1995...
Now that I used up all my time saying that, they also won't switch to a NS ISP. AOL is "fast and easy". The only way I see them switching is up: DSL or cable.
Emusic, while they recently revamped their subscription model to remove unlimited downloads to 40/mo. for $10 ($0.25/song), still offers non-DRM, (mostly)192k VBR MP3s.
I've noticed it, but I put it down to two possibilities. It could be that the new system doesn't have as much training yet. Spam seeping through seems to be diminishing. I also get a *lot* more stuff in my junk mailbox. So if 10% of the spam was getting through before, 1 gets through and 9 don't. Now, 3 spam gets through, but 27 gets caught. I see more spam slipping through, but don't necessarily notice how much more is getting caught.
I religiously use the "this is spam" button in case it's the training:)
As much as I might like the various P2P apps, I don't think you can honestly lump BitTorrent in with Kazaa & the like. I mean, most users of Kazaa (that's the only one I really use) use it to download music/video/apps that they have no legitimate right to have. I know I never use it for legitimate use (I have a weird obsession with 80's music videos).
BitTorrent is different. I'm sure it exists, but I've never seen BT used for illicit activities. I use BT to download demos & isos. Legitimate uses. I suspect most other users are the same.
If I read the article correctly, ARIA is complaining about the use of ISPs networks for illegal downloads. Not quite the same as all P2P(BT) use.
That said, I disagree with all expectations of the ISP to censor access. I think that's wrong. I am US-biased, I realize other coutries have different laws & traditions. Still, I hope all the ARIA & RIAAs go away. It's true we will only find other methods. It's always been that way, and it won't change soon.
What about solar? I mean, you have a whole friggin planet to cover w/ solar cells, you ought to be able to generate enough power for a small colony, at least. And I wouldn't say we couldn't do it now. I know we could. Hell, *I* could probably put it together. Sure, it'd be very seat-of-your-pants, and there would be mistakes made, maybe even deadly ones. There are always people willing to take those risks. Man has always risked all to see what's on the other side of that ocean, over that mountain. The biggest obstacle is money, plain and simple. However much we hate bgates, he's got plenty of money, and relatively geeky. He should pony up the cash & get it going.
I don't know if I agree re: mechanics pay. My sister used to be married to one, and he makes crazy mad money. Easily $100k+. Ask him what he does? Mostly sit around and drink coffee. He "works" long hours, but doesn't do much while he's there. Granted, this is for FedEx, so I don't know how much busier passenger airline mechanics are.
A couple of more wires and they could save a bundle on umbrellas :)
If the girls look like that where you've been going, you've definitely been going to the wrong clubs.

No, $1 per track would be too much. That's where the "not another penny" part comes in...

$600 mill still wouldn't be too shabby, though
(I'll quit my babbling now)

It works w/ CrazyBrowser, which doesn't surprise me, I think CB uses the IE engine... (it does have tabs, though)
Klein bottles are cool. Thanks for the lead :)

I switched to Emusic for mp3 downloads, pretty much for the reasons listed. Or I'll buy $5-10 CDs from small & local acts.
:)
P2P does do one thing good, though. You can get lots of good porn on P2P

People in their 30s aren't dead. They still learn new things, their tastes change, and their personalities evolve.
:)
Plus, you can't help it if some stuff rubs off of your kids & you pick it up. Sometimes you'll even hear about cool new bands from them
Well, one good reason to wait is price. I doubt they are going to go *up* in cost...

Yeah, but wasn't each person's share something like 50 cents? I know it was less than $20. You can't get too much music with that.

Birth control pills rock!
I'd say they were looking at your pic to know who to beat up. Emacs? *Everyone* knows that vi is the one true editor :)
/. Of course, I rarely get modded, either.
I've never noticed a traffic spike when I post on
I also just realized I never visited your main site page, just the links you provided...
It would be even cheaper to hire hitmen...

I went to a kick-ass party that passed out disposable cameras next to the keg. It was really crazy seeing the pics when they were developed :)
