The electronic voting machines should print out a "reciept" to the voter, which shows how their vote has been registered.
the reciept should show a list of the names of the people they voted for
it should have a bar code (with underlying number) to reference the record ID of their vote that was saved in the database
it should be printed out by the electronic voting machine, and collected by the voter
the voter should verify the printed names on the reciept
the voter should then fold the reciept in half, exit the voting machine, walk over to an election official, and place the reciept into a traditional ballot box.
Now if anything is in doubt about the election results, compare the collected paper reciepts to the database. If a precinct is suspected of counterfieting reciepts, then there are at least two additional security measures which could be taken (either or both) at the time of voting:
print out an second identical reciept for the voter to take home with him/her. Let the voter access the election results through the web. Let them enter the record ID number given to them on their voting reciept to verify their vote was registered correctly and was not changed. If it was, then can submit their copy of the reciept as evidence of fraud.
begin requiring voters to place a thumbprint onto their reciepts to prevent counterfieting.
I don't like people who role play. I mean, what the hell? Get a clean shirt and a job and stop pretending you're a werewolf - you're not. Living in denial and never having sex in no way to go through life.
Your kind of rant is a thinly disguised attempt to sound righteous, but does nothing to promote a healthy social well being for people who fall under the category you are describing. In fact, it only serves to draw an even darker picture of reality for them as their experience with your kind of ignorance just further proves the worthlessness of trying to "fit in" with the rest of the world.
Don't tell people how to live their lives. If really you want to really do some good, go do community service, write open source software, or volunteer at your local public school. Don't sit around on geek message board and tell the geeks that they suck becuase they are behaving like geeks.
Expect to see a repeat of sorts as SWG has just been hit with a similiar ordeal. People were found bragging that they went from 52k to over a billion credits in a day or two by duping.
Since SWG's economy is nearly 100% player-based, this will have an even more severe impact than inflation has had on other games where the economy is not directly reliant upon players.
Personally, I only have about 400k of credits which I earned the hard way, and I've started to invest that cash into commodities so I can hopefully ride the wave of inflation which is impending.
Second Life, in its way, is more remote than Iraq. I can't just point you to newspapers with daily coverage of events. I can't send you to the web site of the Second Life Public Library. These things don't exist in a form that can easily cross the border back to reality.
And why not? These "worlds" exist as their own independent "nation" of sorts. Why can't game makers create a direct link between their virtual worlds and the World Wide Web?
For example, I think it would be great if we could read our in-game mail, browse the stores/bazaars, or chat with our Guild/PA through a web browser interface.
I think this may be coming in the future, but I wonder why it hasn't taken off already?
As if we don't have enough problems with all of the things connected together in the home entertainment center now always working reliably.
Not only will there now be physical connection problems, but errant software which (for whatever reason) denys access to content you fully and rightfully own.
Just remember... the people who are "giving" us all these great new abilities are the same ones that "gave" us those wonderful warnings and advertisments that can't be skipped on the DVD player.
Black & White may have had some issues, but I enjoyed it quite a bit. The only flaw I saw with it was that it should have come with 20+ levels instead of only (was it?) 5 levels.
The User Interface for the game had the best "feel" I've ever experienced in a 3D game. It was very easy to get around the world and manipulate the objects within it. It was also amazing how you could seamlessly scroll all the way out.
The "gestures" concept was also quite novel at the time.
It's a shame it did so poorly. I would have loved to see what they could have done with some further refinement to the GUI/3D Engine.
All they would have needed to do was design a few dozen levels and the game would have done so much better...
Finally, if you're into minor spoilers, head over to the IMDB record for Episode III, and you might recognize some interesting character names in the cast list...

I spent way too much (+)$ on Q-Link. Eventually I found out about local BBSes, which offered most of the same service without the expenses =) Anyone remember the CCGMS dial-up terminal program? Man that little proggy was awesome.
Unfortunately, this will just drive the scum to spam from other countries or to go further underground by exploiting vulenerable PCs with viruses and such.
Enacting laws is a nice symbolic step, but we need a technical solution if we are to ever to put the brakes on spammers.
However, if nothing else the Republicans are less willing to raise taxes, so their irresponsible spending goes straight to national debt instead of hitting us directly. I guess that almost cancels out the bloodlust.
All it does it puts off the problem for a while. We will have to pay down the debt eventually. Meanwhile, we pay almost 50% of our taxes to the interest on the existing debt. So essentially, we COULD be paying a lot less taxes if it wasn't for all the debt, mostly created by Republican administrations.
So short sighted they are. They usually claim to be the party to elect if you want lower taxes, but in the long run, they only serve to raise them...
This list is definitely fluffed up a bit for the technologically impaired. I read the list as:
- Better Data Gathering - Better Communication - Better Communication - Energy Research - Better Communication - Better Communication - Better Communication & Data Gathering - Forking Civilization for Backup Purposes - More Jobs
Basically, this list can be shortened down to five items for those who can figure out the implications on their own =)

It just goes to show you that all the crap that has come to web browsers since then has only served to promote annoying advertisments and poor site design.

Eric Schwartz I believe came up with something similar to the following:
The world wide web is like a real spider's web: dirty and full of bugs.

Your proposal is very close to the system used in A Tale in the Desert.
Good game.

You know you've been playing too much SWG when you mis-read the title of this article as "Wookiee Console Hardware Sales Compared". =)

Here's a picture of Anakin/Vader in Episode III.

I'm glad someone else caught this besides me. =)
Ah someone else who remembers Q-Link.
Remember Club Caribe? It was probably the first "graphical" MMOG, created in part by LucasArts.
They've come a long way since then. =)
I spent way too much (+)$ on Q-Link. Eventually I found out about local BBSes, which offered most of the same service without the expenses =) Anyone remember the CCGMS dial-up terminal program? Man that little proggy was awesome.
Actually, IIRC, Contiki reloads the page when you scroll. So it should handle any size page...
So is this a sequel or a side-quel?

This is why I like the Clie models. They are the best of both worlds.
"It is you and your abilities the Emperor wants. That is why your friends are made to suffer"
"It's a trap!"
and only the 'official' Kazaa, not any of its non-spyware derivatives
I don't understand how they can limit it to only the 'official' Kazaa, since the non-spyware versions are just as much a P2P app as the official one?
Either the parenthetical is irrelevant or the program isn't really being distributed by means of P2P.
While you make a good point, I wouldn't worry too much. I'd take a guess that they probably have a reliable backup plan for communications. =)
On the topic related to Star Wars, principal photography on Episode III completed yesterday (Sept 17).
Looking forward to Summer 2005 =)
