irrelevant to this particular thread, cowboy. why don't you mosey on up to the GP and practice your reading comprehension for a minute before you go shooting your pistols off into the air.
you position your reply as a disagreement, but you can both be right in this case. ain't this a great country?
if is carrot and a stick. the phrase refers to using an obvious and visible punishment in tandem with a reward to get the desired result. its origin is in using a carrot to lead a stubborn donkey or pack horse and also liberally using a switch to get it moving.
if you can't correctly use an idiomatic phrase then you should avoid using them altogether. to someone who actually know what the phrase is supposed to be and what meaning it is supposed to convey it just confuses your argument.
they are going to have a bit of a problem when they hit the lake. hopefully the smarter of them will head in the general direction of Chicago, and then Ohio, before heading towards New York.
it is a choice you have to make, i suppose. if you live near the city center where there are things to do, then you are within walking distance of slums and people with nothing to lose. i can't afford to, nor do i want to, move out to the cookie-cutter suburbs where there is nothing but chain restaurants and strip malls. statistically the chance of my place being the one with its door kicked in are pretty low, but if it does happen i want more than a frying pan in my hand.
"Symphony" (a previous Lotus product that, IIRC, was pretty much like a 3-D database/spread sheet before even ms came out with Excel)
i remember using symphony on one of the old compaq luggables with the tiny green screen. it was a rudimentary spreadsheet program booted off of a floppy, and i think predated 1-2-3. not a lot of info about it online, for some reason. it was the first off-the-shelf spreadsheet program that my dad the accountant used, prior to that he was programming his own accounting tools in COBOL.
were i live, if someone does not present a threat to you while trespassing you may be prosecuted for using any force at all. so that is always in the back of my mind. and there are quite a few home invasions around here.
of course, if they charge you or have a weapon at ready then you are pretty much at liberty to do what you think that you need to.
i agree with everything you said. i meant that i would first order an intruder to the ground or allow them to flee, and only shoot if there is a clear threat. i certainly am not going to wait for someone to pop off a shot if they have a bared firearm. but, likewise i want to give someone a fair chance to change their mind before they force me to do something that i don't want to.
the nautical equivalent would be to use a PA to tell them to fuck off, followed by a warning shot, and then sink the bastards.
okay, let's look at my neighborhood (or the immediate surrounding areas). a lot of people have it really rough and there is a lot of poverty. but if you kick down my door i am not stopping to think about how rough you have it or how hungry your kids are. if you threaten someone with violence expect a reaction in kind. i won't shoot first, but i will if you threaten me. it's called self-defense and if you don't like it, don't go around attacking people on the high seas or in my front room.
you will not truly understand anatomy until you actually cut into a cadaver
this is very true, however there is still no reason that i need to be on the campus to study cadavers. we need to get back to the roots of anatomy and the entire medical profession...and don't they have graveyards pretty much everywhere?
heh. i have tried to play a few games at minimum requirements before, after you finally turn off all the options and get it to stop chopping it looks like super huey
well, yeah, in the worse case scenario you could lose everything plugged into the wall. but it is not a guaranteed thing that a nearby lightening strike will cause a surge to your house. i have lived through a lot of lightening storms and never had a power surge. lots of flickering, brown outs, or several minute blackouts.
if i am around then i usually unplug the PC/stereo power strips. but i have had a lot of problems with 2 momentary losses of power.
last summer i saw the blue screen of "oh fuck where did my boot sector go" during a lightening storm.
i like how the power flickers, which causes a reboot, and then dies for real causing there to be no boot sector. yes, yes, i know. i need to get a UPS (still)
what in the devil are you talking about? is that a new version? are you running it in simple mode?
seriously, i used Vuze last night. there were no ads, no commercials, nothing. i always run in advanced mode. there is a menu bar and 2 windows: uploads, and downloads. i don't use it to play media or manage the files. dump files to the desktop and i move them where i want.
shit, if there are commercials in the new version i am not going to update.
okay "jerry" i'll bite: whose constitutional rights were violated in the link about abortion protesters in atlanta?
they blocked the entrance to a clinic, that's illegal, they got arrested. once in jail they wouldn't give their names so they are not released. if you use civil disobedience as a tool of your political movement you will be arrested. that's the goal. the fact they stayed in jail for 40 days was their damn choice.
why don't you read the links you post first. and as far as the GP, he was merely stating the obvious: those who stand out from the crowd get stepped on first by authoritarian cops. but you have a chip on your shoulder about abortion and had to ride in on your high horse with irrelevant links.
(by the way, i like how your google-obfuscated link from some evangelical site tried to download a.doc file right on clicking. classy.)
the headline isn't flamebait, it is redundant. the privacy questions were already raised right here on slashdot in the last discussion about this bill.
if you think it is a good idea, well fine, that's your right. but those of us who do not will continue to "raise questions" about what protections for our privacy are going to be built in to the legislation. the headline is factual, and refers to an actual discourse occurring. to me, this is an invitation to discuss the problems that need to be addressed to balance privacy and the emergency powers the bill seeks to grant.
if your first thought on reading the headline is to start a flamewar i think that you should examine your own motivations.
i suppose it would have been more correct to say that my browser sat at a white screen for hours. i was multitasking in other tabs (read multitasking as on slashdot)
i used to have a lot of problems with gmail hanging, especially when dealing with attachments (either inbound or outbound). also had a stretch of time where it would never actually get to the inbox after i entered the login credentials, and i would sit at a white screen hours no matter what i did. but since i started logging in at the https version i have had no issues. YMMV of course, but give it a shot.

i have done this a few times on the buyer side: you don't have to pay off the loan before you sell. the lender is listed on the title as a warning to the buyer of the vehicle that someone has a lien on it. as the buyer you contact the lender, find out the payoff balance, and write a check for the payoff balance to the lender and a check for the remainder of the sale price to the selling party. this way you know that you will have a clear title when you transfer it to you.
if you write a check for the whole sale value to the private party seller you have no idea of knowing if they will ever pay off the balance of the loan or if they will leave you hanging. the lender doesn't care if the car title is transferred or not, they still have a lien on it and they can repo it from the new owner if they want to.
i don't know how much time you have spent around the homes of the working and lower classes, but they have windows too. it is the upper middle class that wrap their new houses in Tyvek.
Stalker was one of the best games i have ever played. unfortunately i didn't know about the need to patch it and there is probably still a firefight going on at the junkyard. that said, i recommend it to everyone i know with a PC. when i finally upgrade my dusty P4 i am going to replay it again with a system that can actually run the graphics above low. that should be fun.

there also is a small subset that makes lists that don't include a "???"
wow. that right there is the response of a pro-union teacher. clearly your love for education is overwhelming.

Most entry-level helpdesk people make enough money in 20 minutes to buy a 4GB USB 2.0 flash drive.
the cheapest a quick search revealed for that drive would be about $10.
20 minutes is 1/3 of an hour
do you think that entry-level helpdesk pays $30/hour? (that's over $60,000 annually)
