The Amiga had awesome multitasking, esp. for its time. I had an Amiga 2000 upgraded with a 68030 25mhz cpu card (along with a FPU!!!) and I ran a 2 line BBS with two USRobotics Carrier HST 14.4 modems. My BBS had 99% usage (as in had someone connected uploading/downloading) and I was still able to print out my homework report in Scribble (haha yes, Scribble) and run The Curse of Monkey Island all at the same time. It was.......brilliant! Of course, I had to spend money on those upgrades (including a ridiculous flicker-fixer card for VGA monitor use) but it made my machine a monster. Compared to the 486-33 I had running Win 3.1 it was heaven.
It's sad to think what a great computer it was and how it just got passed over and left to die at the hands of such a poorly ran company. HAM graphics (for.. pr0n or other things) and MOD music made my adlib PC sound ilke a joke and the tsenglabs ET4000 video card with VGA looked like a joke next to 4096 colors! woohoo!
I think I need to go take a cold shower now. I think my iphone has more processing power than my Amiga did. haaha.
They need to attach a cool sounding 3 letter acronym. FBI, CIA, CID (not USA), etc... sounds cool. The latest acronyms the white house have been coming up with just suck.
It's simple: matte screens look like crap on the showroom floor (ie., Best Buy) when compared next to a shiny glossy screen notebooks. The shiny screens that look just like their HDTV are what consumers are lusting for. Sure the professionals want matte screens but the mass public fills a larger percent of the ledger.
I believe it's time for all the news outlets to get creative and hire a bunch of 3D animators like this Taiwanese news outlet did:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_HUBVuaCIPo&feature=player_embedded
Leave the news researching to outlets like AP and focus on editorials and hilarious reenactments. There's a reason why The Daily Show and the Colbert Show have such ridiculously high ratings. Sure sure, we all want our news, but it's time to realize the industry needs to do more than move from printing on paper to printing online. It might take years if not decades for them to get it right; the music industry is still trying to figure it out.
the whole point of LOST was lost after season 1
on
Lost Ends
·
· Score: 1
This whole series was a nighttime adapted version of daytime soap dramas with "edgier" theme and bigger budget cinematography. The writers obviously had no idea where to take the script anymore and had to extend the whole series beyond it's intended life. Seriously, compare LOST to any of those ridiculous "days of our lives" or "as the world turns" dramas that have lasted for eons with outlandish plot twists and you'll find the writers must be moonlighting for LOST. It's sad, the whole series could have ended in 3 seasons but Hollywood wanted to milk as much out of this cow as they could before people found out milk doesn't do the body good.
Anyone who complains about foreign companies not "helping Uganda" or Africa in general by denying sales transactions with them has obviously never seriously ran an online business. I ran a moderate ecommerce site (google PR6 at the time) and during the 5 years I had it I received about 10 fake or bad orders from Africa daily. Of course, they were all from Nigeria and wanted ridiculous shipping requests (mail to lagarda bus stop (or something like that)) and for exorbitant amounts (40 DVD players) with insane shipping charges (international UPS expedited!). You can't blame a merchant for not wanting to take the risks of dealing with Africa. One bad experience can cost you quite a bit and credit card companies will never side with the merchant. If you want to blame somebody, blame the credit card companies who place most of the blame on merchants for any fraud that occurs.
" In light of that, Kerr asks, is the Supreme Court's ruling still sound?"
It's still sound as long as (my) marijuana is still illegal!
I will find it ridiculous if officers just drive around with thermal imaging devices trying to find marijuana growers and bust them. You are in essence invading privacy trying to get an idea of what's inside someone's house. What if x-ray vision devices come to market? Will cops be able to take a peek without a warrant? I'll laugh the day cops try to bust a house that's growing a bunch of non-illegal ferns.
I sometimes like to eat a great three story cheese bacon hamburger filled with majonese, chipotle ketchup and delicious cheese with deep fried french fries, topped with a cold beer and chocolate ice cream with strawberries and chocolate dipping. Lets face it, the touch area is going to get dirty. Will it function the same way after that and can you clean it as easily?
And your clickable mechanical mouse will also be hindered useless by your monstrous lunch/heart attack. At least the multitouch surface is a quick wetnap away from functioning again
Because with a 2 year vocational degree, your basing your worth based only on your vocational skills. The unquantifiable benefits (your results may vary) of college include but are not limited to: a) collaboration with others b) social engagement c) research d) conflict resolution, etc. Sure you get these skills in high school and you can get them anywhere else. However, the fact that you got into a 4 year college (and I'm talking about any top 50 ranked colleges, pick your list) provides a somewhat coarse but useful aptitude assessment as to your abilities.
I associate the difference between having your work done in the US or outsourcing it to India. Sure, they have coders there and some are really damn good. But somehow things just don't turn out the same/as well as something programmed by the people I hire here (and pay an arm and a leg for). They can do the grunt work great but wow have you seen some of the interfaces or design logic they produce?
Seeing as Queer eye for the straight guy has disappeared, we have nothing to be afraid of. I personally think the "feminizing" of guys, aka metrosexualism (sic), is purely a result of the demand for more hygenic and "beautiful" men by women. What girl doesn't love the way gay guys look? Sure, women like the masculine looking guy too but usually that includes waxed chest hair, symmetrically shaved stubble, etc.
Quoting David Chappelle, ""If men could have sex with a woman in a cardboard box, we wouldn't buy a house...."
If they just went super geek, like the stores they have here in Taiwan and in Japan, and sold only tech components (capacitors, resistors, pcb kits) and tools (other than soldering guns) they should do fairly well...these stores here are TINY yet they pack the inventory in. Sure, any normal "average joe" BestBuy customer wouldn't know what the hell anything inside is,for but I'm sure there are enough geeks around the whole country to sustain the business. I can find almost all the stuff needed to prototype stuff for my own electronic hobbies and I can't find the fine precision tools anywhere else. I can't even think of anywhere to find T-6 screwdrivers in America except for online stores or specialty cellphone stores.
Heck, even sell cool educational toys like model kits that let you build a tiny solar windmill, programmable arm, whatever. I see all these cool model kits/toys here in Asia that I wish I had as a kid. I just bought my nephew a reconfigurable solar model kit that is 6-in-1: Build a solar windmill, a solar powered car, a solar powered walking bug, solar powered spinner, solar-powered boat/hoevercraft, solar-powered hopping robot (well, it "tries" to walk).
Bought a kit to build a very simple radio and transmitter for another nephew. And I bought for a third nephew (yes, I have lots of nephews) a solar kit that lets him use an empty water bottle as the "chasis" so he can learn the effects of solar-power and also of weight/design/creativity. Yes, there are some DIY educational kits available in the US but they all seem so boring and not inviting to lots of young kids.
Can I get a refund on my MacBook purchase?? It can run windows instead of osx, but it's bundled with it. Is it free? Why doesn't anyone care ?
I guess that's one method of winning- stay under the radar instead of being public enemy number 1.
This is old news, there are a BUNCH of Chinese made cell phones being sold on infomercials in China with solar charging capabilities. They've been selling these for years....Here's a nicer looking example I quickly found just searching...not a fair representation of the lot because there are quite a few very repulsive looking ones.
How good are they? I'm not sure as I've never used one but as far as I can tell from the ultra-cheesy infomercials, these phones are light years ahead of what the big cellphone makers are offering (heavy sarcasm). In fact, one ad I've seen mentioned 1 month standby time plus solar charging = no need for conventional wall charger!
Actually, for kicks please read the link I just posted, there's a claim of purporting 40 minutes of talk time when charged by candlelight!
For an example of how outlandish their infomercials are, check out this miracle vaginal cream. Contains English voice-over. I love China!
To be fair, that's actually fairly acceptable in countries outside of the USA/Europe (for example, I'm in Taipei, Taiwan and in this country you are lucky to exceed 110km/h on the freeway (68mph). In many cities I've been to, cars rarely exceel 50 km/h in the city and 0-50km/h (50km/h = 30mph). Add to the fact that many cities are loaded with speed cams and the expensive price of gas, this is a perfectly acceptable city car or taxi.
Unfortunately, most of its denizens probably go off to jobs that contribute to the "not so green" China industrial frigate
@janderson China is usually full of "plans" that never actually materialize so I'm not holding my breath on this one. If it does happen, however, don't be surprised when there are full of holes in their "all green" initiative.
In the current combustion engine, running out on the road (rare, but it happens when you try to squeeze that extra few miles before refueling) meant calling up your buddy or AAA for a quick gallon of gas to get you on your way to the nearest filling station.
I can't imagine any "instant battery" systems exist for this type of situation and I doubt your nearest service station has a "recharge" plug for your car. If they did, would it be compatible? Yes yes, I know the infrastructure is non-existent yet. But I hope everyone has the foresight to create a unified universal charging "plug." Does the tesla charge using those EV charging stations that you might see every now and then?
I guess if you have 100k for this car you probably wouldn't flinch at having it towed to your house.
Sadly, there are people out there who have gotten away with changing grades and they're probably patting themselves on the back for their more subtle and successful efforts.
When I was in HS, our school was VERY competitive, one of the top schools in CA. Full of nerds, literally. AP test? The question wasn't passing, it was whether you can get a 4 vs a 5. Anyway, the funny thing is..........A LOT of people cheated. Sure, maybe they didn't alter grades (though they would have tried if they could) they cheated in every which way possible from stealing answer keys from the school to hiding textbooks in the bathroom for "emergency studying" during "bathroom breaks" and hiring people for taking SATs. It was a joke. I'm serious. The saying went "the smart cheated because they are smart enough to figure out how."
Sad.
SST is great and I wish they were the norm so my trans-pacific flights were a lot faster but they are NOT the same thing as a rocketplane carrying you into space.
The Concorde was great (I wish I had a chance to ride it) but it did not offer enough value for the cost to the consumers. It just offered faster transport. Your flight on the Concorde was not your main reason for riding it. It was, by all means, designed to be a faster form of transportation from A to B and the reason you rode it was to hop the pond faster.
Space rocket/planes offer something completely different: your paying not just for transport, your paying to go to space and experience weightlessness, see views of the Earth and whatever else you may experience. Plus the bragging rights (which I'm sure some of those who can afford purchasing tickets seek) of having been to space. This is, by all means, not transport but a means to experience something never available before. The rocket/planes ARE the tourist attraction.
I agree, the punishments one may receive in prison may be horrible/fatal and not all crimes deserve such harsh punishments. I also agree that such unfortunate punishments do occur to people who may be wrongfully imprisoned.
BUT, I must say, this guy IS guilty, without a doubt, no?? I mean, it's not possible he was "framed" for these charges. It's not an "innocent" crime where he didn't know what he was doing is illegal or falls into the "gray" area of the law. He had evil intentions and acted upon them to make money from spam. The fact is he did the crime and now he has to do the time (apology for the cliche).
How should he be punished? That's really up to the community that he was found guilty in. In my opinion, all forms of brutality unleashed upon him in jail may not be deserved but maybe he should have thought about that before he decided to pull these stunts. There is no such thing as victim-less crime. If I get caught at customs for carrying a bunch of China made bootleg DVDs, I should pay for the consequences, however severe. The laws are pre-existing and should be abided. Especially with the convenience of the internet now, feigning ignorance when committing crimes is unforgivable.
I agree with most of the previous comments about the potential for military use. Huge advancements in science have always been made by the military in their pursuit of perfecting their war machines, especially during wartime. Interestingly enough, however, is that many of these advancements end up trickling down and helping the general public.
So is this a terrible idea? I think if used for what I'm sure the Department of Defense wants (military weapon, independent mobile power source) it could be a windfall in the United States' need for military dominance. I also think though that this could be a huge gain for the general public. Sure, 5-10 megawatts is ridiculous, but if someone could combine this technology with the space elevator/space ladder technology, I'm sure we can develop even more powerful and potentially less dangerous power stations. I may be talking out of my ass here, but wouldn't there be less power loss by connecting a cable directly from the solar arrays to landlines on earth? Wouldn't it be safer?
Yes, I remember my Amiga.. I started a bit late...picked up my brother's old Amiga 1000 when he left it for the MacIIfx (I believe he paid 2k or 4k for that? wow!) and I was in love with Defender of the Crown, Marble Madness, Battlehawks 1942, etc. WOW!
Then, I upgraded to a 2000 and the 8mhz CPU just wasn't enough. I had to upgrade it with a 68030 running at *gasp* 25mhz and wow things were great. I ran a 2 phone line BBS (using C-net) with my prized USRobotics HST modem and a regular 2400 baud on the other line. Sure, it was a warez bbs but wow those were some great memories! I could multitask the BBS (with 2 users uploading/downloading/posting), write my homework using Scribble!(a wordprocessor), print my homework and have Monkey Island running at full speed while printing. No slowdown. It was amazing at the time, esp. compared to Windows (3.11? Or 3.0? Not sure, barely remember those things then).
The full screen program multitasking, which let you pull up and down a full screened program like slides, was quite amazing and powerful. The games, the sounds, all amazing. Of course, this is compared to AdLib soundcards and CGA/EGA. At the time, there was no reason to "game" with your dad's expensive PC other than the fact that it was "all that is available at home."
But now? C'mon! I soon had to let go of my Amiga when no further developments came along. When Doom came out for the PC along with Wing Commander, Strike Commander, etc., the Amiga just started to look antiquated. Sure, the multitasking element was nice, but it just lost the gaming advantage when no advances in the graphics department were forthcoming. There was just so much potential but the management just took the potential and threw it down the drain. The only graphics update I got was a...... "Flicker fixer" which allowed me to connect a RGB PC Monitor and run things at a higher resolution without "flickering". Remember Newtek's Video Toaster? I heard (not confirmed) that Babylon 5 space scenes were done on it. Amazing stuff I tell you!
Anyway, sorry for the nostalgia. Back to topic: Workbench (the Amiga OS) 3 looks about Windows 3.1 level still, maybe a bit better. It's pathetic. I don't know about Workbench 4 and good lord how could a BRAND NEW market untested and long development dormant OS be better than OSx? C'mon! That's like creating a new model of the DeLorean and saying "This is better than a Ferrari. Trust me!"

We'll have super feminine women and sorta effeminate men. We'll be back at square one!

you're stating the obvious but you're missing my point. Accidents happen, I'm just wondering what alternatives, if any, there are to towing
In the current combustion engine, running out on the road (rare, but it happens when you try to squeeze that extra few miles before refueling) meant calling up your buddy or AAA for a quick gallon of gas to get you on your way to the nearest filling station.
The only graphics update I got was a
Anyway, sorry for the nostalgia. Trust me!"
