Has anyone actually, ever, witnessed a completed Oracle applications upgrade? I mean outside of folklore.
My understanding is that these projects usually 'end' by management committee declaring 'We're Done' or maybe 'Mission Accomplished' or how 'bout 'major hostilities have ended' or something like that, as opposed to actually meeting original project goals.
These are from real mailbox statistics, and not based on some 'test corpus' mail sent in
yeah, but how old is the address for that mailbox? Lemme now how it works on an email address thats 12+ years old (and therefore on practically every spam maillist in existence).
Ok, so when does John Poindexter become an Officer of Google? Hmmmm??? The worlds biggest super computer that knows pretty much anything anyone does on the web... doesn't that fit nicely with the good Admiral's goal?
The way things are going with DVD, the Chinese stand a good chance to come up with a better, less encumbered, and more standardized format. And not because they're communists, but because they're cheap asses who don't want to spring for the MPEG4/ACC/CSS/Dolby/etc. patents.
Yeah, thats one of the reasons I hadda Basis 108. Nice apple II compatible with 128k (yes 128) and a Z-80 CPU built in for CP/M. Great game cracking box.
Best of all, it had a 4-set character generator (Apple (all caps) ASCII, full ASCII, German and APL). The downside is that these were accessed by normally unused I/O addresses and if something went wrong it could switch suddenly into another charset. German wasn't too bad, but a switch to APL pretty much resulted in complete gibberish and a reset.
Easy to learn and play with lotsa friendly, helpful peeps in the communities, PB enabled servers so cheaters are a minimum (and once found out they're permanently banned from most servers).
Lotsa noobs, lotsa old farts like me who only play a few times a month and a few people who are just going to suck at it forever but they hang around anyway so easy pickens for you newcomers. Every community has its assholes, but by and large, this is a decent place to hang out and play for those who just want to play for fun from time to time. For competition and clanmatches, Online Gameing League runs a Freezetag ladder.
Not just the HBO/Skinimax R rated soft-core crap, but real honest PORN.
Yeah, its 'real porn', but they always cut the money shot for some reason... Like its ok to have closeups of penetration and knob slobbering, but some chick taking a wad to the face is a no-no...
Go figure.
Anyhoo, to add something useful to the discussion, I've had a DishPlayer PVR 7200 (the 2nd one that shipped with a whopping 17G disk). I slapped in a 40G and I'm quite happy with it. No limits on timshifting AFAIK. It tends to just work. As for outage due to whether, I'm in Portland OR which I think is 2nd only to Seattle for crappy weather (in the US -- the Brits prolly beat us both) and I rarely see signal loss. Certainly not enough to bother me.
Since I've had it, I've only rarely watched live TV. Everything is recorded and watched later, at my leisure and I go to the can when I damned well feel like it. I'd pretty much given up on TV watching until this thing came into the house.
Oh and if you U/G the disks, make sure you get drives rated for A/V use. I burned up a couple standard WesternDigital 40G drives before getting the word on that. Since then, its been smooth sailing.

No, I'd have to agree. Most of the folks from Utah that I've met (granted, mostly LDSers in software) have been self-rightous zealots who can't take a joke.
Sorry, dude, I don't know anyone who actually *knows* something about computers and software or uses such things beyond games who has cool lights, uses html mail, wastes the time to skin their apps, wants a mac or has otherwise gussied up their systems to 'look cool'. Ok, a few want a mac, but only so they can see what they can do with darwin.
Mostly, techies (the knowledgable form) spend energy on making the thing run as best as it can.
I do know people who expend great effort on the things you mention. They think it looks really cool! Ooooh! Aaaahh! Aside from that, they're pretty clueless.
Now I haven't checked how many LOC Linux is, but the great great majority is NOT in any way copyrighted to SCO, even with their most absurd of claims.
Uhm... i thought that, effectively, their claim is that they own the copyright to all UNIX-like code ever written. They own the "root of the tree" and thus anything that is derived from it or added to it in any way, shape or form is theirs. Even things like Minix and especially and particularly Linux fall under their control, in their view.
As someone here said: All your codes are belong to us.
The US announces it is pulling out of nuclear treaties, and resuming testing, and nobody cares
Pardon?? You live under a rock? Or is slashdot the entirety of your news consumption?
Check the intl affairs press and non-US news if you want to see continued fuming and flaming about the US pulling out of the ABM treaty. For starters, its become one more item in the litany of Bad Things done by that Bad Bush Administration. they did this and that and the other thing and pulled out of the ABM thereby destabilising the entire planet! I read it all the time.
1 (optional) Figure out what you want out of this sort of work schedule and make a proposal. It usually comes down to more cash or more time. Come up with whatever compensation or benefit you think is worth it and tell your boss this is what it takes for you to stay.
2. (if 1 skipped or didn't work out) Quit and encourage as many of your coworkers as possible to do the same. Get a job... go flip burgers or stock shelves if thats what it takes to get by, but find another job and stop workin for these folks and make sure they know why in very clear terms. (no seriously, clear terms, not vulgar terms).
Oh my, this is spooky.... I just ran across floppies for (quoting the disk:)
Microsoft Word
Word Processing Program
for IBM(r) Personal Computers and Compatibles and
for the IBM Personal System/2(tm) Series.
Not a version number in sight (excepting the specified DOS 3.1 requirement)

My kinda peeps. Go China.
Oops, gotta run, time for language lessons!
the level of literacy held by the general public will continue to grow
You're either not from the US, overestimate the general public or are just being generous.

Ya know I was just telling someone today, never get the government involved, they're sure to screw it up and you'll never get the intended outcome.

Yeah, I think I heard of those... you mean people buy those?
i.e. applications that take over an entire system. This used to be a bizarre concept
Huh? A system reboot was the only way to 'exit' soooo many Apple ][ games precisely because they took over the entire system.
Likewise early PC games, and even a few commercial apps.

You must be European... You people just don't 'get it': the US Congress is the most efficient stupidity generator yet known to man.
But go ahead... dream on... Hey, I used to myself...

Someone tell Mr. Goldring that the folks who appreciate the art that is the record album will continue to buy 'em.
The rest of us just want the tunes, one at a time, please.
Then theres only 1, maybe 2 things to do:
1 (optional) Figure out what you want out of this sort of work schedule and make a proposal. It usually comes down to more cash or more time. Come up with whatever compensation or benefit you think is worth it and tell your boss this is what it takes for you to stay.
