    Portable hard drives and thumbdrives are often a much better option for transferring large numbers of large files than networks, even very fast ones.

    Domestic terrorism will be up one day, so by having systems in place they have a better idea of where to allocate drone surveillance resources, human intel on the ground, allocate training and information for law enforcement, etc.

    I'm pretty sure the the founding fathers in 1777 could be considered domestic terrorists .

    One good example is synce - a program to sync WinCe devices with Linux, which integrates well into Evolution, but has no 'dangling interface' where you can just snoop in, get your data and do what you want with it.

    You've got the source, add a commandline switch to produce a delimited stream on STDOUT. I'd take a look at it, but it's not an itch I need to scratch.

    They may be salaried, but they are likely paid a very nice salary. Combine that with stock options, bonuses, and promotions based on developing an excellent new idea, and the sinister simply doesn't seem so bad.

    I haven't heard of any disgruntled Google Engineers. Of course, I welcome the opportunity to be proven wrong.

    I won't be buying a G5. I'll continue limping along with my g3 iBook, and my G3 desktop, upgraded with a G4 card 2 years ago.
    I'll wait another year to upgrade.

    I'm glad I didn't buy a mini earlier this year.

    No, I wouldn't send her there. But I will go there, an then go over to her house with a CD full of the stuff I think she needs, install it and show her how to do the basics. I'll come back periodically with updates, new extensions, programs, etc. She gradually learns to do more stuff on her own, especially if her system stays stable and unsurprising. People who are not geeks, but are otherwise intelligent will learn on their own when they feel safe.

    An hour or two every couple of months saves a great deal of grief, and I get to spend time with my Gramma.

    Our family tithes to our home congregation, and I support the local Pregnancy Care Center, which offers alternatives to abortion and counseling for sufferers of Post Abortion Trauma.

    We also support a little girl in Ecuador, who happens to be the same age as our youngest son. This is through an organization called Compassion.

    I suspect Mr. Jobs may make a substantial contribution to cancer research after this, if he doesn't already do so. He may not have quite as much money as Mr. Gates, but he is certainly not worried about making the next rent payment.

    Get your resume up to date, and get moving. This outfit clearly has no real concern for security, but since you've started poking around, asking questions, and raising hell, you are the messenger that gets shot when the company really does start to take security seriously, if they ever do.

    On the other hand, if they continue as they are, they may not survive, and you are screwed again.

    To get significant performance increases from modern engines, over-clocking, or rather hacking the ECM is essential. It's the only way to tweak a stock engine.

    There is a sub-set of hot-rodders who do the same thing. Running lights, spinner rims and chrome are the important thing, not the performance.

    Did you contact them? How do you know it is not an open standard?

    This is a work in progress. API's may change. Protocols and all the fiddly bits underneath may not be set well enough for even a draft standard.

    Licensing may be as simple as PARC requiring some information about your anticipated use of the protocols. Do not immediately jump to the conclusion that there is something fishy going on.

    Now, it may be that there IS something fishy going on, but I haven't seen it yet. Remember, PARC has been the source of so much that we take for granted, for nearly 40 years. Much of that work has been put into the public domain, or openly licensed.

    I don't care about the numbers. It's the performance that counts. This iBook is by far the best computer I have ever used, and that includes a variety of Dell, IBM and HP portables, desktop and rack servers.
    Performance is the issue, not the clock speed.
